Started folding back in July for a local car club which has since died off (only 3 left actively folding).

Switched these over to fold for [H] this morning

1x Dell R610 - 2x Xeon x5690 128gb ECC Registered
1x Dell R610 - 2x Xeon x5680 128gb ECC Registered
1x Dell R810 - 4x Xeon x7560 128gb ECC Registered
1x Custom GPU rig - 2x 7970ghz editions
1x Custom GPU rig - 2x GTX680 SC (offline while cooling issues are sorted out)

The dells are currently munching bigadv

looks like you're folding bigadv on F@H v7, is this right? do you use the bigadv boxen for anything else? (if not you should try the [H] folding appliance on them :))

Thanks, these are running the Horde appliance but with v7 so I can remote control them from a single source. Does the v6 client net better results?

I'm looking to add another one or two dual x5680 r610 once I have a new circuit added in the basement.
 
v6 will yield MUCH better results and you can still monitor from HFM.

good thing is since you have the appliance, it shouldn't take much to switch to v6.

When you're ready, you can right click your slot on v7 and choose 'Finish'. this will make it so your box will finish your current unit and not pick up another WU.

Just meant control (pause,finish) it from a single v7 client.

That's good to know, the appliance came with v6 I just never ran the fah install. I'll look at switching over this weekend, thanks for the info!
 
for controlling like that, v7 is definitely easier.

for v6 the only pause is to kill the client (you won't lose progress as backups are made automagically in the [H] appliance)

if you wanted some awesome guided help over the weekend, you could jump in the IRC channel and ask, there's usually some yahoo around that could help you out :)
 
Ahh, ok. I'm still somewhat new to Folding, and for some reason thought killing the v6 process meant losing progress.

Might have to reimage these as the fahinstall script/files were deleted in favor of v7, but reimaging them shouldn't take long. I spent more time moving these into the garage than setting up [H].

Still have a couple stacks of xeon x56*0's left waiting for motherboards, although, I'm considering selling these off to fund more 4p's. Looks like most of you big PPD guys use E5's, where are you sourcing your chips?
 
i think there's a seller on ebay that has e5-4650's for ~500/ea.

there are others that are better at sourcing the e5's than i

Welcome to the team! The v6.34 client is used by default by most folks who want 24x7 reliability over all the whiz-bang features of the v7 client. You can kill the process and most times it won't cause any issues. Worst case you lose 15 minutes of work since the process has a 15-minute checkpoint by default. Also, on a box configured with "fahinstall", don't even kill the process if you need to shutdown or reboot. There are rc scripts which handle killing the FAH client.

For some reason, X56xx CPUs are still expensive on eBay and you could sell them to grab some E5-4650's. The best bang for the buck is a 4P 2011 system. It pulls less than 700W and will get you close to 1M PPD depending on the WU. Also, the E5-4650's are similar in processing power to the E5-2680 and you can use the E5-4650 in 2P motherboards as well. It will cost about $3K to get a 1M PPD host. Four $500 CPUs and a $800-900 motherboard plus some RAM and a power supply. 8GB USB stick is all that's needed for the OS.

Excellent info, thanks. I've switched from funding local charities, which are almost all corrupt - local food banks selling off donations for 300% markup to other food banks - to folding. Also having had several family members affected by Huntingtons/Alzheimers made the switch to Folding a no brainer.

I've got $5k/yr for hardware/power. Luckily living out in the sticks where power is $0.09/kwhr spring/fall/winter and $0.13/kwhr during summer, leaves most of the funds available for hardware.

Now it's just a matter of building up online rep (I've never sold/bought online from classifieds) in order to sell off these 56*0's and make room for 4p 2011 rigs.
 
Just to clarify a couple of this, re: v7 versus v6

We really don't know the performance difference between an optimized v6 versus an optimized v7 client with Linux bigadv. They are probably pretty close to the same if they are both optimized (kraken, kernel tweaks, etc.) The main benefits you get with our v6 installer are:

- simple install - fahinstall installs kraken, langouste, a samba share for HFM, and several other things you will probably need automatically.

- ramdisk - due to Folding@home's issues with writing to any Linux filesystem, we have moved everything to a tmpfs file system, which saves your hdd/ssd from getting hammered due to fah client writes.

- support - many of us run the v6 installer version, so any issues you have will be easier to troubleshoot and resolve. If you run into issues with v7, we at [H] probably won't be able to help you much.

- optimization - we continue to work on the current v6/fahinstall/H image method, adding several enhancements, All you need to do to get them is run fahinstall again.

We do have a few projects in the works with v6/fahinstall, one of which should directly address your comments about controlling your clients remotely - stay tuned!

Does this mean, for bigadv big packet size systems, to run larger amounts of RAM to accommodate the bigger files?

Nah. We're talking up to ~500MB dedicated to storage.

Current BA units use ~40MB/thread == even 16x1GB in a 64-thread 4P system are more than enough.

Reimaged a dual 5680 box to use the included v6 client and the immediate results look promising.

The same machine had completed 2 8104 WU's with a TPF of 15:21 on v7 (no kraken/langouste). On v6 w/ tweaks the TPF dropped to 14:48 on another 8104 WU :D

Will see how it goes next time it pulls a 8104

We are talking ~500MB - any bigadv-capable machine should have more than enough memory.

Not yet - another one of those things on my list of things to do when I get a chance. I'll probably start a new post or something when I have more info.

They are almost equal. I have v7 running on my 4P 4650, and I get just about the same frame times as others with the same setup on v6. I have the Kraken and a ramdisk set up; I think the only optimization missing is you guys' kernel.
