John Romero Is Auctioning off His Doom 2 Floppy Disks

Well, let us know how the Daikatana play goes. Never touched it.

Just watched the youtube retro review. Looks awful. Like Quake 2 in software mode. Blech.

I miss that magazine.

He's selling them because he just bought a complete boxed copy from eBay not long ago

if you look at the feedback he left for others, notice seller the_tseki and the message left for him

then look at feedback the_tseki received and you'll notice the listing that has that exact message left, from a user with the same feedback rating of 304

I'm just glad that after all the years we all still remember how he made us his bitch and how amazing(ly the worst game at the time) Daikatana was... right in the notstalgia

Is he selling these disk to fund the development of his new game because the Kickstarter failed?

$10 says he doesn't get past the f*cking mosquitoes in the dang swamp!

In my case you'd have won that bet. I didn't even launch the game after I installed it. Yet... Still plan to, but ran out of time last night. Thanks for the spoilers though!!! Mosquitoes, swamps.... Now I have nothing to look forward to.

Heh, no spoilers, that's right at the first level. I think.
Might have been the demo instead of the full game?

Can't remember exactly. I only remember wading around for a few minutes, finding it boring as heck, and never launching it again.

I'd be surprised if they still work. I've come across a lot of floppy discs and burned CD's (manufactured ones still seem to last) that don't work anymore. The data has corrupted over time.

The newer drives do not like to read the older CDs. I've tried multiple different brand/model drives. Some discs read fine, but others take forever to read even though there are no read errors in the end.

I'm guessing something changed in how the discs were manufactured and the newer drives are calibrated for that.

The discs seem to read fine and fast in drives made during the period when the discs were sold.

I've also got an old 2x speed USB 3.5" floppy drive that reads floppies a whole lot better than the regular drives do.

Couldnt you stream it from your own domain? IM sure its not cost-effective or whatever, but i guess it just surprised me you dont have something homegrown for that.
Not like we have ever done any streaming of any kind. Not sure why you would think we have a system ready to go. But why would we when you can let other services pay for the resources. ;)

For Doom 1...original disks, didn't we all download it off BBS or copy it from a friend that did.

Shareware ftw.

ID released the source code to the public years ago. I don't see the novelty unless he can autograph them to prove they were in his possession at some point.

WUT?!? This dude is buying back old DOOM copies and old stuff so he can... resell it? I'm confused. Shouldn't he have a storage unit somewhere next to Kyle's full of this crap?

He probably just really needs the money. Seems like a great idea to me. That would be like some washed up baseball player buying up some of this stuff on ebay for pennies then turning around and selling it for a few dollars because he is the one selling it. A picture of Elvis is nothing, but a picture of Elvis that Elvis owned, that is something to his fans.

Good detective work. They are even the "original" v1.7 version that he claimed (1.666, 1.7a, 1.9 were the major releases, IIRC) What a sleazeball.
