You can now buy the Doom 2 creator's original copy of Doom 2: John Romero has decided to put up his set of floppies on eBay. The current bid is now up to $850, but many would argue that Romero should be giving things away for free after what happened with Daikatana and him trying to “make you his bitch.”

Romero announced via Twitter that he's currently auctioning off his original five Doom 2 floppy disks on eBay and will sign them if the winner requests so. The starting bid was $10 USD but this has since increased to a whopping [$850] USD. Romero promises that the disks don't contain any defects but, since they are 23-years-old, the glue from the label is inevitably coming off. The disks also won't include the original box.

I still have my C64 disks and MOST of them still work. However, they were never as touchy as PC floppies. IIRC there was a bug in the firmware of 90% of PC floppy drives (3.5" ones anyway) that made the disks unreliable. Seem to remember something like that anyway. My Amiga disks worked fine too right up until I got rid of them a few years back.

On the actual topic... nah, he can keep them.

I still have a bunch of marketing "golds" from when I worked at MGS. Maybe I should try auctioning them off. :p

for 850 bucks you must really love to suck it down

Ah yes, suck those bits down from their mylar medium and play the hell out of them. For only eight-fiddy... I like Doom and all that, but...

hehe I had forgotten about "suck it down"

I don't regret buying an original copy of Chi no Rondo for whatever I paid for it. (something over $100 I think at the time, which was actually less than the going rate) I wouldn't take these D2 floppies for free though. :D

What is Romero even up to these days? It seems like every 3-4 years he pops up and claims to have something big in the works. Yet I don't think any of them (except Diakatana) even shipped.

I want to say he was doing something in the "mobile space" for a while, but I can't remember anything actually showing up. (at least nothing noteworthy enough to have seen or played it)

I was going to say:
Is he hard-up for cash or what? What would possess him to decide to auction those off? I could see if he were auctioning them for charity. If auctioning for himself, I guess getting $850 - $1000 would be nice to pocket, but original disks man! If I were him, I would want to hold on to the nostalgia.

But then I read the action and saw that these aren't 'original' Doom 2 disks. They're version 1.7, which he says in the auction was the first version, but I distinctly remember my version of Doom 2 being 1.666, and the Google verifies that the first released version of Doom 2 was 1.666.

So, these would be cool to have his signature on, but they're not like a first edition or anything like that.

He should give them to me. Way back I was on DWANGO and Romero entered the room. He had the nerve to make his user in all caps: ROMERO. I wanted to play him badly, so I created a game named "DOOM SUCKS" and dang he joined that game within a couple seconds. Funny thing is, I never saw him once in the game. He kept killing me no matter what I did, sight unseen. After 10-0 it was over and not a peep out of him. I was a pretty good player, so I can only assume he had some cheats in the game lol...

I'll take these instead, at least I get a box.

Did it work?

I get a "File not found" error... :(
I'd be surprised if they still work. I've come across a lot of floppy discs and burned CD's (manufactured ones still seem to last) that don't work anymore. The data has corrupted over time.

Every time the name Daikatana is mentioned, a gamer loses his gaming wings.

I'd be surprised if they didn't work, I have yet to find a bad floppy that wasn't magnetized or mistreated that didn't work.....my Apple II and C64 floppies are even holding up, but what's more disturbing are the drives that are loading them...are still working. That is some old rubber and capacitors in those things.......

For those young grasshoppers who don't remember the floppy releases of Doom back in the day, go back to the pic Kyle posted and look at the version #... :ROFLMAO:

There is an asshole at my work that the entire company agrees is an asshole but he sticks around, his name is John Romero.. makes me laugh everytime I see this pop up

Not playing around either. I did it. I am going to play it too. Guess I need to set up a Twitch account.

If you do it...

Hmmm...

FUCK!!

I might've just logged into Steam...

Had to get it from my phone though... it's remote installing...

:p

I won't set up a stream but I do have it loaded now.

I refused to buy it for this long, so now for $1.53 I will finally satisfy my morbid curiosity.

I still have my original doom2 and final doom (I think) boxes around somewhere :)

Geez it's up to 1500 now, as someone else mentioned I might grab if Carmack signed, but Romero?
