Java shuts off my Radeon HD 2900 XT

My work rig has a Radeon HD 2900XT. When Java starts, the video card turns off.

Rather I start Oracle or a ticket system that uses Java, the programs would start but kill the video card in less than a minute. I haven't installed any software in weeks and the computer has performed perfectly well for over a year. I swapped the card with another 2900XT, to no effect.

At first, I thought the whole computer was rebooting. I started a screen sharing session with the computer, opened the Java control panel, and went to About. The video card's fan instantly spins-up, just like when the computer starts, the picture completely freezes for a few seconds, then the picture on my monitors go away. But the remote screen viewing software still works. I can still use my computer, there's just no output to the monitors. I unplugged and reconnected the monitors, to no effect.

I've stressed the video card and it functions perfectly fine... as long as Java doesn't start. I haven't heard of Java shutting off video cards, until now. Has anyone else experienced this?

I'm about to wipe Java and the ATI driver / CCC from the computer... or I could have IT do it. (lol)

The latest version of the driver, downloaded from Dell... I can no longer open CCC. :/

With the updated driver, it says no ATI cards are detected.

Monitors are working just fine, so long as Java doesn't start.

One java uninstallation and one ATI driver uninstallation / reboot to safe mode / driver sweeper session later, I can run Java without the card shutting off.

However, CCC won't start. I right click the Desktop and click it and the CCC runs in my Task Manager, but the UI doesn't appear. >.< I can keep opening more and more CCC.exe's and each program consumes roughly 20MB of memory.

driver sweeper may have broke something, its the main reason i always suggest stearing clear of it.

I had the same issue after a driver reinstall. There was a fix involving clearing out some ati files left in the Windows folder.

Here are the instructions I followed:

This is an old thread, but it's one of the top search results for "ccc won't run" so I wanted to post another possible solution here. My solution was to clear out the Windows GAC (Global Assembly Cache). In Windows 7, you can browse directly to "C:\Windows\assembly". Sort by "Public Key Token", then delete everything with the Token "90ba9c70f846762e" (ATI's key). You'll obviously need Administrator privileges. No reboot needed either. Reinstalled CCC and it ran perfectly!

The GAC lets you share DLL's that are the same version number. If it's in the GAC, any installer will NOT install a new DLL - it'll use the one in the GAC. If the GAC DLL is corrupted, you're majorly SOL.

When I reinstalled the CCC, it took longer to install then it had before. Presumably, this was due to the installer copying all the correct DLL's to my hard drive. And no ATI DLL's have made it back into my GAC.

Well theres your problem right there. Get the drivers from amd.com, not dell.

No, but seriously, uninstall the drivers, do a driver sweep, then install the latest from AMD directly. Never ever ever install the drivers from an OEM for a video card (unless you absolutely have to, like in the case of some laptops).
