Sometimes it's best not to even entertain a stupid idea. You know, like intelligent design, how old the earth really is, sexual abstinence, etc. Merely bringing it to the table for discussion is a valuable waste of resources and brain power, power that could be better spent rearranging your sock drawer.

Even better than the gamers here who haven't killed someone, let's double down with all the people who have a psychiatric mental illness who play video games. It's a special kind of fucked up to go murder a bunch of people, not just video games or mental illnesses. The vast majority of people don't murder, regardless of influence, and even less so are those that go on killing sprees. That's why it's so news worthy when someone goes off and mows down a group of people. It's not normal in any society to do this.
As with guns, video games are inanimate things that require interfacing with a person to work. Yet, instead of blaming the shooter, the objects are under the most scrutiny--at least so it seems. If video games cause such an violent trend, shouldn't Japan have gone to hell long ago? I mean, besides America, that nation seems to have a lot of video games. Now, maybe we should see what rape statistics are because of all the dating sims, but still, I don't think they put up with a lot of bullshit.

My friend is a lawyer that games pretty hard and he still hasn't lost his law license retarded or not. Hope the Special Olympic Committee or someone comes down hard on this ex ambulance chaser for calling us retarded instead of mentally challenged. It's like he missed the first day of debating 101, the second you insult the other side, you automatically lose no matter how good your talking points were.

So I finally read his little diatribe, and I really do have to take issue with this, especially since he throws God into the mix.
One thing the bible does say about making judgements is "by their fruits you shall know them, for no good tree produces evil fruit, and no evil tree can produce good fruit". Jack Thompson's words and actions show what kind of fruit falls from his tree. That he claims to have God on his side in this "crusade" of his shows that he is woefully deceived. Jesus said to preach the gospel to the world, not belittle and condemn people that you disagree with.
My personal thinking is that Thompson is clinically insane. He's obsessed over video games, and that it's somehow murder to play a game. There's been genocide in Africa on and off over the last two decades, Syria has been in the middle of a civil war for a while now, people are being shot with real bullets, blown up with real bombs, hacked apart with real machetes, and raped by real gangs - all in places of the world where people don't even have computers for the most part, yet its video games that cause this? As if people haven't murdered each other and warred with each other until video games came about! It's a complete disconnect from reality. I'm an avid gamer, and a mod author, and I know full well the difference between reality and a game, and which is more important. If I lose in a video game it's just a game. If my hard drive crashes and I lose my games forever, life goes on and I can find other things to do.
I've lost friends in life many times, and I weep every time just the same. The pain never gets easier each time, no matter how long life goes on. Those are real deaths, and those friends are irreplaceable. They don't respawn, they don't connect to a new server, they're gone from this life and I'll never get them back. Equating death in a video game to death in the real world is an insult to every living, breathing being that's ever lost someone they cared about. It's an even greater insult to those who have lost their lives, and to claim that God is on your side when you equate the value of real life to the fiction inside a video game... if that's not a sin, I don't know what is.
The Marines would disagree with this. Also, so would programmers like me. You're not killing anything in a video game. To be 100% accurate, you're pressing switches that change the bit state of registers inside a machine. 1's become 0's and 0's become 1's. That's all computers do when you get down to it.
I don't need video games to know how to kill, nor do they make me want to kill. If decide to kill or not to kill something that's my own choice, for my own reasons. As for training... again, the Marines would take issue with this, as would anyone that's actually trained to kill.
Not according to the letter of the law. Any defense attorney will tell you that. Innocent until proven guilty. That's the corner stone of the American criminal justice system. No wonder he got disbarred.
Spitting in the face of God? If he's read the bible he'd know that none are righteous, and that all are sinners, including him. Jesus dined with sinners of all sort, and pardoned a harlot that was going to be stoned to death because he loves and cares and wants nobody to be lost. That's not the message Thompson is sending. Instead he's being judgmental, condescending, arrogant, and pompous, looking down on people whose "sin" is unpardonable in his eyes. Saul of Tarsus was a pharisee that was directly and indirectly responsible for the deaths of over 5000 Christians, yet he was forgiven and converted and wrote a great deal of the New Testament after having changed his name to Paul. Playing a video game is somehow worse than what Paul did, and yet, God used Paul as one of his greatest witnesses and most effective disciples? This shows the complete disconnect people like Thompson have from what the bible really teaches. He uses his "religion" as a club instead of offering a hand in fellowship. Regardless of what anyone thinks of the bible, this is NOT what Jesus taught, and its this kind of heresy that gives all Christians a bad name.
Now he's making judgements as to a person's spiritual condition, which only God is supposed to be able to know. Jesus said "Judge not, lest ye be judged, for as thou judgest, so shalt thou also be judged". He also warned, "But if you say, 'you fool!' then you are in danger of hellfire". No believer has a right to call someone spiritually dead. We can assume they are and reach out to them with the message of the gospel because we care about the person, but to condemn the person and insult them, while claiming you're acting in God's behalf? I believe it's the devil that's referred to as the "accuser of the brethren" in the bible. Who does Thompson's actions and attitudes more closely mirror?

Because there is nothing to talk about. It has been shown that playing games does NOT cause you to do violent things. If anything it has been shown that video games can help some people blow off steam to not do violent things. For those that do end up doing something bad, they were on that path to start with and the game really played no role, they were already fucked up.
Actually he is anti porn also so he would probably go after you for that just as much as the people playing GTA.

His reaction to porn was why he was almost disbarred the first time. They thought that he was bat shit crazy and forced him to get an eval. he passed it and sued for them making him get the eval and they held back trying to go after him again for awhile. Then GTA IV came out and he really started going bat shit crazy again, he brought his own rope and hung himself without much help from anyone at that point allowing them to finally do what they wanted years ago and were able to disbar him.
Well, I think that was known a few years ago when he started to lose a debate with a 11 year old and resorted to calling him names and quit the debate.
