I know that the Node is a pretty forgiving space but I figured I'd run it by you guys anyway.

This is going to be a gaming build.

Depending on performance I may add a CPU air cooler at a later date.

Any pitfalls or suggestions on this?

If you're going to stick with one SSD and no boot drive, I'd suggest getting 500gb.
 
Solid build and agree with going to 500/512gb SSD if you can afford it. Buy once instead of adding more later.

I would personally switch to the asus z97i because of it's m.2 slot which may come in handy. In fact, if you have the money to shell out for a M550 m.2 512gb SSD then you won't have to deal with sata cable and data cable. Whether it's worth it is up to you.
 
I also would suggest going with a board with a m.2 slot if you had the money for a larger SSD. Or you could go with a more common two drive setup, a SSD and a HDD.
 
this motherboard does have an M2 slot. I could go with an M2 SSD I suppose.
 
The SATA M.2 Type 2242 standard the ASRock Z97E-ITX/ac supports is very niche, we've yet have to see any of the bigger companies release an SSD that is worth it. Their supported M.2 list does not lie.

I disagree. The 4790K has been $249.99 for a few weeks now at Micro Center, and you get another $40 off when buying with a motherboard. I think $210 for a 4.0GHz (turbo to 4.4GHz) CPU is worth it.

This. I picked up an Asrock Z97E-ITX and a 4790K for a really good price. Or save 70 bucks and get the 4690K for 180. Either way if you live near a microcenter this is definitely the way to go. Even after taxes I have not seen it cheaper anywhere else. Oh and use the money you saved to buy a decent CPU cooler.
