Any links? This thing still has nothing on the mother of all coolers, it was either Scythe or TR, I think.. It was basically the size of a side panel, fit a 360mm fan if I recall. Although it was stated at the time that it would probably never see production.
Yes, but in a way they're necessary. Without the steady increase in HSF size over the past couple of years, I doubt we would have the excellent performance currently available in popular products from such brands as TR, Scythe, Zalman and Xigmatek to name a few.Anyone else think that these larger (and increasingly) more expensive air coolers are getting a bit out of hand?
True, but some people will refuse to install WC in their systems, regardless of the cost. The hassle, added complexity and risk being some of the reasons. Except for the extreme enthusiast segment, the industry seems to be moving steadily away from WC because of the very good performance available with modern HSFs. Granted, WC is still more effective and you will be able to OC higher, but is a few hundred MHz worth it? Some people think so, while others are disinclined. The old air cooling $$ differential to water setups is getting smaller and smaller.
Xeon boxes already have special backplate support bosses designed for CPU mounting. The OEM Xeon HSFs are usually solid copper and weigh a lot, so Intel probably deemed it necessary to specify additional support for their server processors. You don't need to install them in special server cases with the mounting brackets and supporting hardware, but they have been that way for a number of years and AFAIK all the server vendors ship their Xeon products installed as Intel specified. And if this keeps up, no backplate will help, we'll start needing built in case: CPU cooler support brackets before too long.
