what is the difference between 1st and 2nd generation?

Is this related to the iRack?

back on topic, from a quick google search, it appears your gen1 accessories wont work on the gen2 model. gen2 also has a standard headset jack now? again, I'm just regurgitating what google told me. oh, and sound quality is apparently better in gen2. subtle differences, from what i've read. should be adapters available if you need gen1 chargers to work on gen2.

Not sure this is the best forum for this -- but to answer your question (in addition to what Enginurd has provided,) the second generation has a metallic bezel (like the iPhone) plus an external speaker and external volume buttons. It also (supposedly) has a BlueTooth radio as part of its chipset, but it's currently disabled by current software. (Rumors are that iPhone OS 3.0 will enable BlueTooth support on 2nd gen iPod Touches.)

I have some college books that come with CDs, they mostly have question and answer type of exams, quizzes, etc. Can I put these on the ipod touch or does apple not allow 3rd party software?

That couldn't be any more inaccurate... All of it. What you're describing is more akin to the iPhone (original vs 3G), though I don't think there was any change in accessory compatibility between one and the other (the 3G did gain a standard headphone jack tho). The iPod touch never had a non-standard headphone jack, that would've been really stupid on an MP3 player (as opposed to somewhat stupid on a phone :p ).

Anyway, to answer the OP's question... The 2nd gen iPod touch (not the iTouch, not the Touch) gained the side volume buttons and a bunch of apps (which latter revisions of the first gen touch had pre-installed and previous owners could purchase for $20). It's also somewhat thinner and has a metallic back (which scratches easily and is kinda slippery, you'll want a silicon sleeve or case imo), and it has the speaker (which is really weak sounding, my phone's speaker is much louder). Battery's also improved a bit.

Oh yeah, the 2nd gen iPod touch also has microphone input in the headphone jack (using Apple's earbuds + mic or an adapter)... Useful for internet calls using Skype or recording stuff, or apps like Shazam. Oh and I don't think it's noticeably thinner, just seems like it because it's tapered towards the corner and not flat like the original... Still the metallic back scratches real easy (unlike the screen which is tough as nails).

Whether you can put those materials you've mentioned on the iPod depends on what format they're in, etc. I'm sure you could convert 'em to a format that would work, and I'm sure there's a program that would let you view 'em, worst comes to worst you can always jailbreak it to install apps other than those on Apple's App Store (which have to be authorized by Apple). Personally, I haven't felt the need to do so w/mine.

Y'know even CNet's half-assed reviews could've told you all this...

You don't trust them to tell you that a 2nd gen iPod touch has volume buttons on the side and the first one doesn't? lol That's not a matter of opinion, it's just a common fact you could've found out reading their review or anyone else's. The point is you're lazy, and you're getting wildly inaccurate info here for being lazy.

The only way you're getting a 1st gen at this point is if it's used or a refurb anyway... And the only reason to do that if it's like $50+ cheaper imo. I wouldn't do it regardless, no hardware volume buttons on a music/movie player just stinks.

Oh yeah, the easiest way to put the contents of those CDs would probably be to convert the pages to JPEGs and then save 'em as photo libraries on the device... That way you can flip from page to page and zoom in to read specific pages, would have to play w/teh conversion so that the JPEGs are readable though. I'm sure there's a more elegant solution though, probably something along the lines of an e-book reader that lets you read PDFs (which is what your stuff is probably in already).

It is actually thicker in the center has the volume controls has a 600mhz processor downclocked to 400mhz so it is same speed as the 1g. It has an extra accelerometer in it so it rotates with any direction my 1g will not allow 360 degree rotation so the screen can rotate a full circle not just 270 degrees. It has nike+ support (bluetooth which has been activated by jailbreakers and will be added with 3.0 probably...) and it has a internal speaker.
