Okay I am going to Italy in a few weeks for a little over two weeks. I finalizing my equipment for the trip. How does this sound (my equipment list is in my sig). I am going to travel light as camera gear goes, so I most likely will not bring a flash or my 70-200 because I do not think I need it. Any tips/recommendations.

My camera
5D with 24-105 f/4 IS

Wifes camera
XTi with 10-22mm

I would bring the 70-200 just to be safe, but its up to you.

Don't forget all the little things, extra batteries, memory cards, UV filters, etc.

I think it's a good idea to be wider than you need so what you chose is just fine. I'd just bring the 50 1.8 because you need something low light capable.

I would at least bring the flash. You bringing a tripod of any kind? Night time shots in parts of Italy are nice. :)

Semi-cheap, compact mono pod and the Nifty and you should be good. Good thing is that you can swap that 10-22 onto your 5D for some nice shots but I have to agree with Ian about the low light comment. Who's do say you will not have a beautiful pic while having a candle lit dinner on the canals only to wish you had something that could do lower than f/2.8

Agreed, the little things like batteries, cleaning supplies, etc. can be make or break in a pinch.

Yup, and the 24-105 is decently wide on the 5D, the 24-105 really was made for the 5D :)

I would look into the 50 1.8 as well, nice tiny cheap lens that can be very useful, plus its under a $100! Very nice to throw in your pocket.

Nighttime shots are great if you are into that kind of thing, monopod or tripod would be nice, but if you dont have one or want to lug one around you can always find a nice stable pillar or something nearby to sit your camera on.

Agreed, like I said above the Mono Pod is a good idea and the nifty 50 1.8 is a awesome thing to have in your pocket, cheap, awesome, and fun!

The 10-22 will not work on the 5D FYI, it is a crop only lens (EF-S), but there really is no need for it as the 24 becomes much more wide on the 5D vs. crop cameras. The 24-105 will do very well in low light as long as it is static, the IS on the 24-105 is very very good, but IS can only work for static scenes, not people/things in motion in low light.

On the cleaning supplies...

If you're going to carry any lens cleaner on the plane make sure it's in your checked luggage. If you're like me and want the camera bag in the overhead bin, make sure the lens cleaner is not in the camera bag or you're going to lose it at the security gates.

I think I am going to bring my 430EX over my 580EXII. I can see some uses for a flash.... To bad I cannot bring a lightstand or some PW....

If you can bring a tripod instead of a monopod, that would be my suggestion. I don't know if you've ever tried long exposures, but they can be amazing. Not possible with the monopod. I've done Europe as well and the 70-200 was hardly used. I no longer take any of my big guns when traveling overseas (unless my wife wants to go birding, then that's a different story all together).

Enjoy the trip first and foremost!!

My canon 10-22 was my best friend in Italy. I took 90% of my shots with it. Rest were shot with my 70-200 F/4 L IS.

Yeah the 10-22 is going on my wife's crop factor camera (XTi), while the 24-105 is going on my FF. 24mm is wide on a FF camera. I am bringing my baby flash the 430EX. The 580EXII would prob be overkill.

24mm on Full Frame is relatively wide, Try a 17-40L, 16-35 II, or even the Sigma 12-24. ;)
