IT Salaries Remain Flat

It's almost pointless to get a degree in I.T at this point and time... speaking for FIRST HAND experience trying to get into a career in IT.

I was speaking to a friend about my current interest in entry-level IT/helpdesk/geek squad/janitor work and he says, regarding I.T. degrees:

"Once you start seeing webpage ads, banners and TV commercials for something (in this case, a degree in I.T.), that means that field is pretty much done, or has only a few years life left."

It must be true because I'm seeing goofy looking banners for Information Technology and Computer Systems, lol.

I see that you're in NYC, and take it that you see these banners on the subway?

Well those kind of started up during the dot com boom. I don't think it's a new phenomenon. Before then any idiot could make a lot of money in the field. Now you can still make a lot of money, you'll just hit a relatively low ceiling if you are not talented enough to separate from the masses.

Very true. You have to have the right mix of skills. IT is very broad. Being a computer geek is not enough anymore. Break/fix guys are the bottom of the totem pole. The real $$ is development and data management. You have to be a good problem solver and thinker. You also need the complimentary soft-skills like communication and business savvy. I work in Healthcare IT and the money is good because the skillset is specialized. Not only that the field is expanding with the new mandate for electronic medical records. If you're a good database person who can code and communicate well, there will be a job for you.
