Well then looks like I killed the thread again :p

I currently live in Oregon, looking for jobs in SLC, UT. My fiance lives in UT. I am moving out to meet her once we get married in August. I have put out some resumes (About 10) and no one will even call me back or return my calls! So would it be unethical to change my address to her address? If the right job comes along, I can/will move after my 2 weeks notice at my current location.

Could I just tell them im back in Oregon for a little bit tying up loose ends preparing to move? Thoughts?

I revised it some:

I've been running into the same thing NotSoSimple. I'm trying to relocate to the Hampton Roads area of VA and I can't seem to get a call back even though I'm well qualified for a lot of the positions I'm applying for. I've put in my cover letter that I can be there within 3 weeks of accepting a position and that I don't want relocation assistance, but it doesn't seem to help. My sister lives down there and I will be staying at her place until my house here sells, so I've been tempted to put down her address instead of mine to see if that helps. I just think employers will look down on it if they find out, or want me to come in for an interview right away and I can't.

I changed my resume and put my fiances current address, and it worked like a charm. I got 3 calls, and I have 3 interviews on Monday. Im flying out on Saturday to prep for them. Im confident I can get an offer from 1 of the 3. When they asked if I could come the same day, I said no as I am living both in Oregon and Utah. I am currently in Oregon finishing up some business and finishing the end of my move.

2 of them werent comfortable with phone interviews (Understandibly, to some degree). I didnt bother asking for travel assistance though. My fault as I worded it like I was coming over anyway and an interview would be conveniant.

Wow, I guess I may have to try that then. I'm surprised about the phone interviews, I was looking for other positions locally for the last year or so and everyone wanted to do a phone interview first, and I know my current employer always does a phone interview before having someone come in. From what we've found it's easy to weed out the people that we are sure aren't going to fit without wasting much time. Good luck with your interviews.

I think the problem is they assumed I wouldnt have time to travel out for an interview. Most places I've applied for wanted an in-person interview same day. One place I had a phone interview, and he requested a second in-person interview after that.

Let me know what you guys think. Also anyone hiring in Connecticut :) Resume first then Cover Letter.

Dear Kathy Brush:

I am interested in a position with Bloomfield Public schools as a Technology/Network Specialist. Please find enclosed my resume, which demonstrates my technical experience.

My four years of technology experience includes, but is not limited to, building custom desktops and trouble shooting hardware and software problems. During my time at AMT Systems, utilizing Mobility Solutions software, I successfully created a solution to implement parking tickets to those who violated the parking rules. Through my time as a self-employed computer tech I successfully created a multimedia setup for the East Hartford High Wrestling program. In addition, I built various personal desktop computers for teachers and staff throughout the East Hartford District. Also, for Star Enterprise, I engaged in building an infrastructure network.

Throughout my six years at East Hartford board of education, I worked with troubled children. This experience has taught me how to handle difficult situations in a calm, productive manner. In working with the children I acquired the skills to be proactive instead of reactive. I learned I could watch the children and see how they would respond to different situations. In doing so, I knew when I could intervene and prevent an unsatisfactory outcome. It was a positive experience for me to mentor these children.

The opportunities provided by Bloomfield Public Schools are exciting, and I believe that I can make an impact.

I will contact you within the next week to verify that you have received my application and resume. I would like to set up an interview so that we may further discuss my abilities.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Justin Magoulas

Troubleshoot is one word. Not to be a jerk about it, just pointing out that when reading a resume, the employer is focusing on what you are trying to get across, and shouldn't be for one second stopping to consider a grammatical error in your resume, whether it matters to him or not.

My 2 cents.

Your job descriptions seem REALLY lengthy. I would limit it to 1-2 sentences for the main points, the things that describe your 'Main duties' or day-to-day activities. I chose the route of just putting Position, Company, and Time frame. My prospective employer can ask about whichever ones he wants.

You say 'Looking to Persue MCSA' Ok..You have thoughts about doing it? Do you have any certs towards that? I dont see it as necessary information, you can add that in your interview. Once you get a cert, make sure its on your resume. THEN you can trail it by saying 'Course 70-270 Windows XP, Microsoft Certification, working towards MCSA'

You mention Eastern Conn. Univ. What are you doing there? It just says your attending. This could be ok, as your prospective employer will ask, but im curious. Get a second opinion as to put it in there or not.

Hope this helps. Im by no means an expert, and above is just my opinion on what I think might help you. Best of luck! :)

OBJECTIVE: To obtain a position as in the Information Technology field.
Sounds funky. Maybe something along the lines of: To obtain position in the field of Information Technology.

Maybe move the skills to the top. These are the items that highlight you, tell them a condensed version of what you can do. No sense in hiding that in the dark :) Ditch the 'Also' on the last line of your skills.

For your BB job. Maybe condense your titles into one line: Current position of <Position> as well as <Other position 1>, <Other position 2> and <Other position 3>. Good job on limiting your descriptors to 3. It kind of confused me to see multiple positions under one job, I thought it was incomplete other jobs!

I have read through this thread a few times over and am currently revamping my resume; however, I never really had trouble getting calls. Sure at the beginning nothing and I changed it around and boom got a few calls and face to face interviews, but it never went anywhere. I have a feeling most of it is because I am not a people person by nature and most of it is acting. Second, during college I had two bad semesters where my grades slipped (personal problems) and because of money and financial aid I was unable to retake some of the classes giving me a below 3.0, have a 2.8. During some interviews they ask me and because they have a cutoff of 3.0 I don't get any farther than a hello (and these are entry level jobs).

What I really am seeking are some tips on interviews if I get any. I am sure after the resume advice on here I will be able to get a few doors open, but keeping them open is my problem. I need some interview advice from people.

Thanks

Well you already mentioned one pitfall is your lack of people skills. Anything in particular? Anxiety? Just go out and strike up conversation with people. You will find this confidence when you just get out and get it done, then its a cake walk.

It is suggested to change your resume for each job you apply for, maybe try that? Custom tailor it to the company and position. Truthfully, Ive never done it and have not had a problem.

Why not post your resume? Maybe we can offer futher help. Sorry the thread seems so dead, it used to be pretty lively, not sure what happened. Best of luck friend!

Edit: Do you call them back? I find if I dont call a place I applied for back, nothing happens (Well 75% of the time). When I call them, it gets the ball rolling. Last interview I went on (~2 weeks ago in fact) I got an interview due to my 'determination and persistance' for the position. Best of luck!

Well, I guess I should re-state my earlier statement. I am a very confident person, the thing is I don't know how to relate during interviews or compose myself (it has been 5 years sense I was fishing for a job) and I try not to come across eager or with the "PLEASE GIVE ME A JOB!!" mentality There have been interviews where the questions took me a while to answer and so I would have long pauses of quiet because it was nontechnical related, where other interviews where more tech questions and had no problem.

Maybe I am just making it more difficult than it is. At least I can vent. Will post resume soon.

I have been doing desktop support and I am looking to move on to a network admin type job. What can I do to improve my resume?

hey I'm on a tight budget as it is until I get a tech job. I have no suites, usually go in with slacks, docks, polo shirt. I wouldn't mind getting one, however I will have to put it on my credit card :(.

Second I have had a beard for 7 years, nicely groomed, but all the online sites say shave it. I don't like not having one. Is it really that important?

Great questions! Regarding your suit, hit up the thrift store and Goodwill places. I have almost always found amazing suits there for next to nothing that have lasted me years. In fact, it was one of my most treasured secrets when I was marketing myself early on. I would be working convention center floors passing out business cards, talking to different companies, and in the back of my mind I would be laughing at the fact that I only paid $35 for my suit when most of the suits in this building probably didn't go for less than $400 -and I looked the same!

Regarding your beard... I suppose it depends on the field and if it looks well trimmed. I think beards can easily look pretty awful if they're not maintained often but no reason to think that it is a deal breaker. I know that if you're looking to get into the network admin field or especially the coding environment, a lot of people there have beards too! So I'd say it matters more that it looks well maintained than to have to shave it off completely.

I have a few questions:
Due to the lack of experience I have in IT, the only really thing I have is the fact that I'm in college. Should I really get my A+/Network+ certs? Would it be worth it for me right now, or just to wait? I really want to start working in IT, but maybe it's also my resume. Any advice would be really, really helpful. :(

Currently I applied for a job as a Tech in the Tulsa, OK area and the pay was little $11.00hr full time (only making $8hr now so it is a step up) so I didn't see the harm in applying for it anyways if I didn't get it I would chock it up to interview practice. The recruiting company Robert Haft Technology is the one doing it and from reading the posts on here they aren't that great to deal with.

The recruiter didn't feel comfortable sending the company my stuff because he thinks I am a bit over qualified (I am looking for a IT to ease into the career) and the employer may not want to take me on for fear of finding a hiring paying job in a few months. So, he said he has another position in that area for an oil company to tech for them (I have no idea about the job specifics because I can't find it on monster, career builder, etc.) making twice the money and full time. So, he said he would submit my stuff and go from their.

I don't have a problem working for more money, but I a really need a different job ASAP and I don't want to get burnt out or go for a job that I feel I am not qualified for. I just dislike applying for a job before knowing nothing about them.

Sorry if their wasn't a questions in that blob of text; I guess I could ask, "Is that what I am to expect in the job hunting with recruiters?"

ps

still waiting for payment from Modis IT, Inc. they lost my time sheet and never called me and three weeks went by until I sent it again. They also try and micro manage jobs. Called me every thirty minutes to see how the job was going.

One of my previous co-workers found his current job through Robert Half and he really liked dealing with them. They got him in for a lot of interviews and really pushed to get him a strong salary. He went from something like 38k here to 53k starting there, and in less than a year he received 2 raises to around 60k a year.

Yesterday I got a call from the Go2IT Group (never heard of them) and they wanted to offer me a job. This is how I understood it, each week they would submit an email with work in my area and if I wanted that contract then I can take it. Seems like a work when you can tech job for extra cash. Seems cool, but I have to call her back today and find out more.

I was wondering if anyone here could pretty much do a 1 on 1 with me with helping with my resume via AIM/Yahoo/MSN/e-mail, anything. I really, desperately need a new job and I never took a resume writing class in high school.

E7130: Ahh the question about IT Recruiters. I am by no means an expert but have been dealing with alot of them lately.

I just met with a guy @ Robert Half. They seem like they have there crap together. The second day we met (Had to come back for testing) he already had a position for me that he wanted to push. I was very impressed with them.

Currently I have an interview tomorrow w/ a company I found through Appleone, another Staffing Firm. They dont do as much IT as RHT, but they do some. They werent as professional, kinda hokey, but my agent has kept in contact and really worked her tail off for me!

I also am registered at KForce...I havnt heard anything back, I leave voicemails, nothing gets back. I write them off the list.

So IT Recruiters can be a great thing. Best of luck!

i think people are depending on this thread too much to write theyre resume for them. there's literally millions of web pages on google with sample resumes, cover letters, and tips. you can find cover letter and resume examples for people with no exp, and no education, some exp, but no education, and lost of exp and lots of edu. im surprised jmroberts is still actually holding everyone's hand through this.

when i redid mine i just googled my ass, read countless pages of examples, and took a good 3-4 hours of my saturday to do my resume alone. and gave about the same effort for my cover letter and from every staffing and it recruiter ive met has told me how strong and polished my resume is. you gotta show initiative and do the grunt work yourself

I'm just looking for tips, I don't exactly have 3-4 hours to set aside (full time college and full time work) and I don't want someone to write it for me. I just want a little help, since it'll be for IT jobs and I have no experience.

I would like to thank the people who have posted in this thread and shared their insight, because your examples I have landed a job.

Hey all - Throwing my hat back in the ring, since my current, grant-funded job might be cut to half time soon. Already have a resume that I have been building onto for some time, but would appreciate some overall critiques. Would a different format/style work better? Thoughts on job descriptions? Anything else? - Stuff like that.

TIA!

Just a thought, calebb. Maybe you should make this offer it's own thread. If someone has questions about the job, location, etc., it wouldn't take another thread OT as a result. Good luck with your search though!

To those of you who have recently posted resumes on this thread for review:

It has been over 3 years since this thread started. I, along with a few others, have put a lot of time into helping many people here with your resumes in that period. On many occasions, most of what I say is simply a repeat of the same information previously said just a page earlier. As this has now become the constant rule, I have deliberately stopped reviewing resumes if they have the same issues or problems previously talked about. I just feel it necessary to make it known outright that I have made this decision. I'm sorry that getting help with common resume questions means reading through this massively long thread but it's the best we've got right now. Until I get a good few days to simply sit down and complete my resume-writing website, this will just have to do.

So if your resume has sat here on this thread without a review, I'd encourage you to go back through this thread and mull over previous cases. You may get all the help you need!

Good luck people.

Going to be graduating this may, polishing up my resume and would love some feedback.

Just a note, you are not nor will ever be a engineer unless you have proper engineering training(engineering degree(not engineering tech)) and have passed tor FE and PE exams,

If you have not done that, then you are not a engineer.

Just because you put a splint on ur kinds broken finger doesn't make ya a doctor.

Also getting a degree in IT or MIS doesnt really show much. If ya havent gone to school yet and plan to. Become a engineer. because to be honest the engineer is going to get the job every time.

debian is not unix based,

werd.
and tacman, did you report to the IRS for your consulting? All your work experience must be verifiable, if not it only looks like you have a few years of actual field experience. 2 of my years of experience are unverifiable and I can't put them on my resume because ever potential employer has brought it up. One more side note about that, this could seriously hinder your chances of getting the salary that was promised to you from the government as they base salary on years of experience.

I would not elaborate as much on the actual devices that you have experience with, I used to use that format a few years ago and removed it becuase I was too bulky. You can replace it with something like "Cisco routers and switches" or "Cisco routing and switching" and if you feel like you can back it up "Enterprise class Cisco routing and switching" <-- be careful with that, I have been grilled many times because that's my exact phrasing in my resume.

Im going to go back to your experience, with "7 years" of experience you have to build out your accomplishments a bit more. If your potential employeer can also verify that you do have all those years, I would showcase that in the beginning part of your resume and leave your skills to the later parts.

Last comments are on your relevant course work, you have the cisco academy... do not put CCNA after it if you do not have the certification.

Overall your resume is better than most in this thread, im sure that jmroberts will have some excellent feedback for you as well.

Nicole,

Much much better, you got my recommendations on aim :D
