IT Resume Thread

ok, I'm going to post my resume here...

First of all, here's your SMART document in a MUCH smaller size!!. When using scanned images, make sure they're compressed first. Additionally, it's a good idea to turn them black & white 1-bit images for even better file size compression. This document has both page 1 & 2 in it and it's still only about 87KB as opposed to an uncompressed color set of 12MB!!

Ok, on to the resume... First of all, I'd encourage you to get this down to a single page -and I'd also re-format it as a "combination" resume as I've described here several times on this thread. Your summary of qualifications is useless without a measurable qualifier. Just stating that you have something as a skill doesn't tell me how much you have. Even saying "extensive experience" is a totally subjective term that means different things to different people. I hate to say it but I'd suggest that you read through a lot of the previous posts on this thread for better ideas on how a combination resume should look.

Also, I wouldn't worry too much about fancy fonts or formatting on a modern resume. It holds very little weight in this industry -or most others for that matter unless your in the design field.

Especially for someone in your situation, a combination resume may be a good move. Since your work experience is the only selling point in a traditional resume, breaking from one career to another becomes problematic. But with a combination resume, your well-defined skills list is your selling point. There you can highlight the skills you want -and in the order you want. Good luck!

I am looking to relocated to the Kalamazoo area in the next month so I thought I would brush up my resume. Please be harsh/critical as that is the only way it will get better. Also any advice on finding a position in that area would be wonderful. Thank you!

I'm terribly sorry NotSoSimple but it looks like I missed your post nearly a week and a half ago. Here's my thoughts on your resume as it stands...

First of all, I would suggest picking if you're going to do a "traditional" resume format or a "combination" resume. Within a traditional resume, you will primarily convey your skills through a detailed work history. I personally find the traditional format to be a waste of space (as I have said many times within this thread over the years). If you decide to use the combination resume format, your work history will be drastically reduced -probably one line per job (just very basic information only). The real meat will be in your detailed skills list.

Next I would recommend starting with a "summary" statement that just sums up who you are in 1-2 sentences. Something like, "7 years experience network administration with a background in dog training." It's basically the canned answer you would normally give in an interview to the question, "So... Tell me about yourself."

Be sure in your skills list to sort by a few major categories (usually 3-5) so the reader can quickly find out if you are what they're looking for. Also don't forget to include MEASURABLE levels of experience. Just saying you are "very experience" or have "extensive experience" is meaningless and totally subjective. If you can't include a time frame, then mention if you received awards, commendations, etc -something you can measure to show your level of skill and experience.

Hope this helps. Give that a whirl and I'll check it over again (hopefully without waiting 10 days to get back to you this time).

Annaconda, few quick thoughts:

1) The objective has no meaning. If you're looking for a position as a senior system administrator, put that in there. I like to see something about "looking for a position that offers an opportunity for professional growth and advancement."
2) Put CCNA first. The other certs really don't mean very much, CCNA is a big deal.
3) Polish is lacking, for example "Implement, Configure and maintenance of companywide Windows Xp Pro, windows 2003, 2000 servers network systems." This is not a sentence. It has multiple grammatical errors.
4) I would consider whether you want to list your job at a pizza restaurant at all. You were a manager so it indicates responsibility, but it was only for a year and has nothing to do with the position you're applying for, systems administration. Same deal with your school job. Nobody really cares that you worked for 5 months in your school's HR dept when you're applying for a SA position. I know I wouldn't. Taking these two previous jobs out allows you more space to elaborate on your job doing SA work. Instead of just "network security", you can go into more detail setting up NIDS, running pen tests, etc.
5) Get some unix experience; install RHES4 and mess around with it, install apache/mysql locally, etc. Alternatively, emphasize that you're a network admin, not a systems admin. If you really want to stick with windows, learn SQL server. You really don't want to be a windows sysadmin, that tends to lean towards enduser desktop support, which is hell.

Again, just my opinions... remember that I interview DBAs, not sysadmins, so the advice is fairly general.

1) Direct objectives are better than vague summaries. Also, "high interest"? Wording is critical.
2) Instead of fedora and debian, say redhat and debian linux. Businesses use RHES and RHAS, SuSe if you're in europe.
3) No PHP or perl? No experience with CMS/CDS?
4) The Cisco stuff is a big deal. Go into more detail there. If you've ever configured a router, firewall, setup a ptp VPN, etc, say so. If you have, you should be looking for a job as a network admin, not a SA. CCNA will help there.
5) "Assistant" sounds low level. Just say help desk, or help desk operator. Even better, don't say help desk at all, say consumer support or end user support or even better, engineering support. Help desk has a negative connotation.
6) Working in helpdesk, you must have dealt with tons of really pissed off people. Mention your ability to handle stress, high work volumes, and to multitask.
7) Your small business is more impressive than working in helpdesk. Put it first. Also, why say "small amount"? Don't offer information that reflects badly on yourself. Don't lie either, but it's not a sin to omit details like that in your CV.
8) Designing networks can be a big deal. Go into more detail, did you setup switches/routers, T1 lines, etc? Even if it was just a linksys router and setting up a little linux box for firewall and DNS, you "architected and configured enterprise network infrastructures for small businesses using appropriate technology". You need to be able to defend what you say, so don't go crazy, though.
9) Why offer the home lab? They don't need to know that, it sounds weak. Just say that you're preparing to take the CCNA in april.

Dude i really appreciate that. Thanx.

Couple of questions. You mean install Linux or Unix? What is the most important in the market?

I'll start with sethmo and annaconda as your resumes are fairly similar:

1. Take an evening soon and just read through this thread as far back as you can. There are a lot of items with your resume that have already been addressed. You have a traditional formatted resume and personally I think they are pretty much a fairly lame way to sell yourself to an employer.

2. Lose the objective statement. Replace it with a "summary" statement as I described in my last review: 1-2 sentences that sum you up right quick.

3. Your education doesn't indicate if you graduated or have any degree. If you didn't graduate, I would list it something like "34 credits completed towards BS degree in Basket Weaving".

4. Lose the detailed work experience list and concentrate on fleshing out your skills list (again, read most of my previous resume reviews for more info about this).

5. Lose "References available apon request" --besides, it's actually UPON! Be sure to check your spelling 10 times over as it's a real deal breaker for employers to find spelling errors on a resume. There is no need to mention that you can provide references.

6. If you're going to list ANYTHING on your resume, you must provide measurable levels of experience to qualify it. Otherwise it is totally subjective --that includes your education.

Also, schizo's comments were right on!

Now Doliviss...

1. Having a summary statement is waaay better than an objective. Now add a time qualifier to the statement. How many years of experience do you have for instance?

2. I would also consider spending more time detailing your skills section than your work history. Sort the skills out into several major categories and then fill them in. I'm glad to see that you're already adding years of experience to most of the skills you already listed.

3. Lost the "references available..." statement.

Beyond that I'd just say I also agree with what schizo has said about the rest of it.

Hope this helps you guys and just thank the fact that I'm up sick and can't sleep for getting back to you all this morning!

If you're looking to be a windows admin, unix isn't important at all. But again, windows admins tend to end up doing desktop support, even the high level ones that can configure AD, exchange, etc. If you know any unix the knowledge pretty much transfers over to all unix flavors. That general skillset is important, it encompasses stuff like ssh, shell scripting, init scripts, installing packages, looking for performance bottlenecks, getting your head around grep, awk, named pipes, and so on. Installing and messing around with fedora is all you really need to do.

I know SSH, SFTP, i forget to add that into the resume. I am also learning Exchange Server 2003, i will also add it.

Fedora, i heard about it. I will start Unix traning as soon as i finish Exchange, then Linux also. :)

Good God man so many things. :D

I will post my updated resume by tommorrow, thank you again for help SCHIZO.

which is better a 1 page resume or a two page resume? I am confused.

A very common question actually. I find a 1 page resume is the most effective way to sell yourself. Too much detail and the reader gets lost or overwhelmed. Now this becomes a problem with traditional / chronological resumes as you age. Since your experience grows, or you change jobs, that work experience section can become very long. Using a combination resume that spends most of the time detailing your skills, this problem is easily solved.

I can think of a few exceptions to the 1 page rule though...

1) If I was asked for a detailed work history (and I have in the past). I like to have one already typed up and ready to go just in case. Some employers are sticklers to silly traditions that frankly serve no purpose. Besides, most job applications require a fairly thorough work history list.

2) If you personally know the individual that will be receiving your resume and you are absolutely sure they want to read through your "life story" for some silly reason.

3) If you believe that your long and sorted tale of employment actually does a better job of selling yourself than your skill set. For instance, if you worked for a very prestigious employer, like The White House, Microsoft, Cisco, etc...

But these are rare...
Hope this helps!

I started browsing through the forums and this thread caught my eye.

I see many of you have certifications in many areas.

what i am wondering is, if you went to college and were an MIS major, did your professors recommend you to get certified or did you take it upon yourself.

Next year should be my final year at Canisius College and I will have my Bachleors in MIS and I am not certified for anything. All I will have is my BA (BS not sure which one it is). I have a feeling this is going to be a problem when entering the real world. will it and what should i do?

Well I'm a little bit scared to do this but I've been working on my resume writing website for a couple of months now and I think I'm ready to start getting your thoughts on it's design now -before I get too far along. I've only got a couple of actual articles posted there but I'm working on the rest. I mainly want to know if the layout makes sense -if you think the answers you're looking for are easily found.

I'm still planning on adding a FAQ so, besides the "1 page or 2" question, can you guys think of any others? If not, I won't bother with a FAQ page and just answer questions in the articles I'm posting.

Here you go...
http://www.presentdayresume.com

Well, that depends on what you want to do. I personally don't place a great deal of importance on certifications, I focus much more on experience. Of course you don't have any of that either, so a cert might be a good idea. Generally speaking, certs guarantee a minimum level of competence. Which is nice to know, but not a big deal. Of course some certs do matter, like CCNA, PMP, and OCM. They're generally the hard ones.

I posted my resume here about 2 months ago and never really got a response so I thought I would give it one more shot. Please be harsh/critical as that is the only way it will get better. Also any advice on finding a position in that area would be wonderful. Thank you!

I apologize for any formatting problems. They are all correct in the word file. Again, thank you!

Sorry I missed your resume here ChadSWhitney! I'll give you my thoughts now...

1. The summary is a good start but you have to add a time frame or some other form of measurable amount of experience. I don't know if your just a newb network admin or if you're a senior level admin that should be managing the entire WAN at my university. Now I may figure that out later on by reading through your work history and doing the math but make their job easier and just tell the reader up front what level of experience you have in your profession.

2. Your skills section is also a fantastic start. I see that you've sorted out your skills into major categories which helps out the reader a lot. But you also need to add some sort of measurable qualifier to each skill here as well. For instance, are you simply familiar with MS Project installation and general use or are you an expert in it's many features and can teach a class to the rest of the management staff on advanced techniques? I can't tell from your description.

3. Your education listing is well done. Since your graduation date is still somewhat "fresh" I would have put it just where you did -right after your skills section since it is still fairly relevant (arguably more relevant than your work history). ...Now this next thought I'm still a little torn on and am totally open to contrary ideas on... I don't think that the "relevant course work" is actually that relevant for a resume. I think that the fact that your degree involves MIS should make most of that fairly clear but who knows. Also, you misspelled "relevant" as relevent. ALWAYS triple-check your spelling!!!

4. Your employment history is where I'd do the most revisions. I'd trim that down to just a single line per employer. Take much of your information and add it to the skills section. For instance, I can deduce from your work history that your "experience" started in 2001. That would mean that a lot of your IT skills are at the "6 years of experience" level. Not too shabby but did your actual experience start earlier? Were you hired for that first job totally green? I doubt it. My guess is that you were tinkering with networks and PC's on your own before anyone decided to hire you and pay you for working on them. Well with a skills section with an experience qualifier, you can make that point. BTW, are you still capable of supporting AutoCAD?

Overall, I think you have a fantastic foundation to work with. Most all the needed information is there but just needs to be placed in a more effective manner on the page. Hope this helps...

my latest that i submitted with the obvious contact info taken out, and company taken out  let me know any ideas you have

Well I hate to still say it but I'd suggest for the last 2 resume submitters that you both start out by reading through this thread as much as you can stand before too long. Most of the pitfalls you both have are addressed several times over here. Until my resume writing guide website is completed, I'm afraid this is the next best thing. Good luck!

I am going to take a stab at reading the entire thread because I am wanting to relocate out of Arkansas for better opportunities to pursue a job.

I would appreciate that if any of the veterans could offer to review and criticize my resume. English is my second language while ASL (American Sign Language) is.

I would prefer that if my resume would not be in the public. I can offer a link to my resume in PDF format.

Now to few hours of reading and I will keep my eyes on the top right corner for any Unread PMs..

What is generally done here is the personal information and company names are removed. That way it can be completely public without worry. Otherwise, I'll be more than happy to review your resume privately but I think it would benefit the community here if the critiques and comments can be seen by all.

I am glad that you offered to help me in private. However, I read all of those posts in this thread in the last few hours. I am totally surprised at how much I have learned about resumes. I think it would be fair for all to see what my resume holds because of those other resumes have taught me the same thing in which I hope would teach the future readers too.

At least a month ago, a recruiter asked me to give a high detailed resume that covers project management related tasks under my previous employers. It took me a while to create it and then I paid a resume creator to polish this resume. Yes, this resume had one of the mistakes which is "Objective." In the end, I did not get this job as expected.

I am coming directly out of being a contractor and desiring to be a full time employee with a reputable company.

Would it be valuable for me to post the original resume (with the personal info omitted) and that I can create a new one based on those advices given in this thread?

Well I certainly see no harm in posting it here. I think it would be great to see how it came out, personally. Now did the resume writer catch the Objective statement or did they put it in? Also, I woudn't worry about if the resume wasn't a perfect piece of writing as far as why you didn't get the job. I've suggested many people for jobs that had terrible resumes initially. A bad resume may mean not getting the job but even if it isn't well put together, if the reader can still glean the information they're looking for, and you're a good match for the company, you're in. If you're just not what they're looking for, no amount of resume writing will ever make up for it.

I look forward to seeing your stuff!

This is my resume... Please be critical/harsh :)

I've read at least a couple of posts on this thread telling resume writers not to bother with Word docs or PDF files. I understand that many employers and HR departments strip the text straight into a database. Still, I ask, is there any virtue in making a resume more presentable than the usual notepad document? Might an employer's first impression be better if the resume contained some formatting, even if the document were emailed? Just a couple of questions that came to mind as I was putting my resume back in order.

While I'm posting, I have enjoyed the wealth of knowledge in this thread, from the resume reviews to the concept of the combination resume which was totally new to me. Keep up the good work, guys!

Didn't know this thread existed. Glad I found it. I am looking for an entry-level IT job using my CIS bachelor's degree. This resume has provided one interview for me, so maybe it's not too bad? It's usually just plain text, but I put it up here as a pdf

Good luck!

any huge mistakes you could point out for me so that i can read the thread and fix them? i know i need get a summery instead of an objective.
