IT Resume Thread

I have'nt had a chance to tweak any systems at work for some time, and it's starting to stress me out. We have alot of really intresting systems, but lately my boss has been really busy, and I'm ending up doing all his work (without the salary ofcourse)... :D

A friend told me they have an open position at their work, and it actually sounds really intresting. Small company (current one is several hundred times bigger), with a nice atmosphere. I had to write my cv in english, since it's the language they use, and had to do it quickly. I would appreciate any comments on these (be honest)...

:edit

Changed quite a bit and sent it out... Keeping my thumbs up

Well other than suggesting that you guys read through most of the original comments made on previous resumes here, I'd first suggest replacing your "objective" statement with a "summary" statement. Don't worry, they'll know what your objective is!

Get rid of the "references available..." statement. The only time mentioning information about your references would be if they WEREN'T available or something -like you worked for the CIA in your past and can't divulge your references for security reasons for instance. Other than that, I'm sure your references are available so there's no need to put that on a resume.

I'd start there...

FYI.

I just got a job at HP!!! Jr. Test Engineer in multimedia !!! Thanks for all the folks that helped me!

:D

worked on my resume for a while......dont have an objective yet but wanted to get some feedback on it. I will be graduating this december, so its time to go out and find a job

change objective to summary, like jmroberts already mentioned multiple times in this thread. the position you apply for is your objective, to get that job!

ditch the security clearance statement. You're not "clearable" if you dont have a security clearance, so.. dont bother.

remove Photoshop, Illustrator, and GoLive from your technologies list. I would prioritize this list in a way to show which you know the best listed first and the ones you want to work with listed first as well.

Don't make things bold unless they're headers (names of company's OK, "B.S." in your degree not good, "Education" should be the header and be bold. will make it look a lot nicer)
Don't put those stupid S characters
Give yourself a better name than just "technology intern"

here's what I would put:
  • Performed on site repairs and provided technical support over the phone
  • Implemented email server into current infrastructure
  • Upgraded firmware on various network switches
  • Installed 42U APC racks in existing infrastructures
  • Installed fiber patch panels
  • Implemented switches
  • Performed wireless site survey

Make your job at Target sound like you were in backroom doing lot of inventory and managing the warehouse. You dont want to sound like you were a monkey with a forklift or something though. You're the guy with the clipboard :p

I would remove the Home Depot cashier job. I dont' know anyone who would care (no offense), unless you were applying for another cashier job.

Hope this helps :)

some advice needed.

basic background is no real experience (unless 4 days doing printer repair counts, fired mainly since they were in deep debt and i suspect just didnt like me *they cited "overqualification" too*)
2 year degree in cisco networking (think CCNA without the cert itself, and i dont remember much beyond conf t and the basic config stuff)
my real skills currently (and my current 4 year degree) is info security (read: anti-hacking and auditing + incident response), which i may need to intern for, for a while, since no good IT has "entry level" anymore.

i wouldnt mind some people that have put together rock solid resume's to repost or relink them, so i can simply put my *honest* info in place of yours (since i dont like dealing with corporate BS like making a resume)

hopefully im not hopeless here :p

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the thread. It really helped me work on a good cv.

Just signed a new work contract, so I'll be changing jobs at the end of the year. I'm really eager as the new place seems very intresing, and has a nice atmosphere.... And my salary went up 40%! :D

opinions please?

Well to start with, and I know this will suck, you would do good to read through this entire thread to prevent asking for help on something that may have already been addressed. With that said...

1. Your "Summary" statement sounds a lot like an "Objective" statement to me -which I think we all agree has no place on a modern resume.

2. I'd beef up your "Skills" section with a few different categories and more detailed breakdowns of your skills.

3. Trim down your employment history to the bare essentials: Job title, location, duration. This will force you to spend more time fleshing out your "Skills" list.

4. If you're still in school at present, list your progress like, "34 credits completed towards BS. in Electrical Engineering" or something like that. This shows that you're not just there for the hell of it.

5. Lastly, I'd combine your military experience with your civilian employment list and then add your skills obtained there to the "Skills" section at the beginning. I believe this will give you more opportunity to elaborate on what the Army did for you.

Thank you for your service to my country BTW. My father was a Pearl Harbor survivor so it means a lot to me.

A brillant place to start from! I'd try really hard to trim down your summary to almost half that amount of wording on the second sentence. IMO, I think it's a bit too much to swallow in a summary.

The only other thing I'd do is to sort out your "Skills" section into major categories and then go from there. That long of a bulleted list is just overwhelming to look at let alone read!

Not much else there I'd change.

thanks for the reply jmroberts! I know we are all busy these next couple days but I'll get a revision up when I can, thanks for doing this for all of us I know it's time consuming for you!

roberttran, you've got some nice work experience on there. why hide it below your education which no one is going to care about anyway? put education at the bottom. also, bmw car club of america? seriously? i'd trash your resume just for that- it is completely irrelevant to anything and it makes you seem pompous (hey, look at me world! i own a beamer!)

i would also completely remove the relevant coursework section. once you start to have a "relevant work experience" section the relevant coursework section is a waste of space. also, try not to spread your skills out. you list some under each job, but then you tack on some more at the end. either list your skills all together and just list jobs seperately or try to include all the skills within the job section.

that's my opinion, and i'm no expert on this.

Well said big daddy fatsacks. I'd also strongly suggest writing a "summary" statement for the very top of your resume. We're talking 1-2 sentences at the most that simply sums up who you are to an employer. Hunt around this thread for some examples.

A good summary statement is helpful for everyone involved. It tells the employer if they should keep reading or not waste their time on it. It helps the job seeker better be able to describe themself -very important to be able to do when on that interview. Many are surprised to realize just how hard it is to "summarize" who we are.

Hey,

Thank alot for the feedback.
I have education up top because I am still going to school and most of the jobs I apply for are internships that want to organise resumes by school. I thought I'd have the "additional information" section as to a portal into my personal life and the activities outside of school and work. I see you point about the being a member of BMWCCA entry, never though of it that way.
What do you mean not spread my skills out? Do you mean that each job should be specialized at something? The reason why the skills are so spread out in each job is because I am an intern. I do have main job responsibilities, but they will also toss along any other work that needs to be done.

-Robert

what i mean about the skills being spread out is that you are naturally going to have a lot of the same skills/responsibilities from one job to the next. one skill may be used at every single job. but you don't want to waste space listing it 3 times, nor do you want to make it appear as though you only developed that skill for the 6 months you were in that internship because you're actually an expert with that skill having used it for 6 years.

so put all your skills together in a section. put all your jobs together in another section. i think it's just a better way to organize these things.

if it is more appropriate to list school at the top for your situation then go ahead and do that. just keep in mind that once you get out of college you'll want to move school to the bottom. someone who dosn't have as much work experience as you would keep school at the top, but . . .

also, additional activities can be a good section to have. but a couple of points. if you already have a 2 page resume and this section is going to push it to 3 dump it. it is the lowest priority. also, if you were the treasurer or president of the BMWCCA then that might be a good thing to have as it shows you have a leadership role in the organization. you are a leader. but it would be better to list that you are an officer in the local BUG or even a member of it.

in any case, i had nowhere near that kind of experience when i was in college. you are doing very well.

Ok. I'm trying to move back into the IT scene. I screwed my back up, had surgery, and found out the hard way that I need to stay in computers. It's cool, though. I didn't do it right out of high school because I love computers so much, I didn't want it to become "a job", but be able to come home and fix my computer, play games, etc... I miss working with them, though.

Anyway, here's my resume. Any suggestions? I plan on getting my MCSA and CCNA asap. Perhaps getting my Net+ & Security+. I'm not much of a cert guy, and just basically want them for my own personal gain. Learn a lot from studying for them, too.

Thanks for any comments! :)

did you read the comments in the previous pages before posting your resume? if so then you should really consider reading over the many posts again. It doesnt seems like you followed any of the tips or suggestions offered.

i dont think this thread was created to write people's resume's for them. it was designed to be a collection of best practices, tips, and ideas to help those who are having trouble with thier resume, or to better tweak it so it'll stand out, but that's only after following some of the basic steps outlined within the thread. take a few days to read over the posts and redo your resume using the ideas placed within. we'll gladly be able to help you then

your resume seem ok, but i think you should redo the section i quoted. you say you have an excellent unerstanding of networking and routing protocols for instance, but unless you really do you shouldn't put that on your resume. if i saw your resume, id specifically ask you to explain stanning tree protocol, the types of records available in a dns database, and the process used to get an ip address from a dhcp server..discover, offer, request, etc (again you said you had an excellent knowledge of it).

i interviewed someone for an internship position last week and he said he was familiar w/ ghost. i asked him to explain what he did with it, and he said he's never really used it, he just put it on his resume. needless to say he won't be getting the position (although he was a really nice person).

you also say you have a strong technical knowledge of routing and switching, so im assuming you could tell me the difference between rip v1 and rip v2, ospf, bgp. id assume you should be able to explain variable length subnet masks and why or why not it shouldnt be used in a specific situation.

if you are that familiar with those technolgies then wonderful. if not, use the same wording you use in the OS section. saying your compentent is one thing, saying that you have an excellent understanding and strong technical knowledge automatically puts u in a whole nother class.

hope that helps

I just graduated, and just finished my last day with the bank a couple weeks ago. I had a 3.0 GPA, should I include that? Also, I had a couple of part-time IT jobs with two companies 5-6 years ago, one for about a year and a half, the other for about 4 months. Should I include them? Any other comments or suggestions would be appreciated. I expect to give more specification as to the particular job I apply for in the custom cover letter.

Hello all. I just graduated this past December and I am currently looking for an entry level IT job. As of now I am trying to land a entry level consulting job with some of the larger consulting firms, but am also very interested in anything networking related. I have two different resumes, if you all could, please tell me which one is better, why, and what I can do to improve it. Thanks for all your help.

Both Resumes can be found here

Yes we do. Nothing showed up when i clicked on your link. It said the folder was empty.

Ok, sorry I wasn't aware of that, lets try this.

**Both take a couple of steps to download, just click download on the first page and scroll to the bottom on the second page and click the link to download**
Resume 1
Resume 2

Did those links work any better?

Yea those work. The first one is really ugly with those colored lines. The question I have is, why are you looking for an entry level job if you have a few years experience on your resume?

Thanks, I think I like the second one better myself. And to answer your question I'm fresh out of college and as the job search is going it seems like I'm just little past entry level but still don't have enough experiance to qualifiy for a better position. Plus I'm pretty lost with my search for a job right now.

Yup, waaay too long. A resume should only be a one page document. Now I totally understand your situation though. My resume once was a 2-pager (all at 8-point font!!). But that was before I found out how effective the combination resume format can be in conveying my information. I had a lot of experience in a variety of places and I wanted to get that accross but didn't have a good idea how. For a half-decent example of what I'm talking about, check out my resume and cover letter on page 3 of this thread. I think it's about 1/4 the way down the page and I've colored the text a little darker than normal for you to find it. It's not by any means the most perfect resume but I think it will give you some direction on how to format and word things to make it more effective in less pages. With that said, here are some of my usual comments I make on this thread from time to time...

1. Start with a "summary" statement that sums you up in 1 to 2 sentences. If that's all they read, it should do. Don't get me wrong, it's one of the most difficult things to write!

2. Sort out your skills into major categories so the reader can easily find out what they're looking for without having to read your life history in the process. 3-5 categories should do.

3. Use measurable descriptions when talking about your skills and experience. Saying something like "extensive experience in..." means nothing to the reader. Use definite terms like "2 years experience in...". If you have a skill or some experience, qualify it with how much. If you don't, readers will most likely assume you just got started!

4. Trim down your work experience list to a single line per job. Don't use the employment history as a place to spell out your skills as it is too much work to sift through as a reader. And it may be redundant at that point anyways.

5. Lastly, dont' worry about fancy formatting on your resume. Although I like the border and kewl font you used for the title and such, that sort of thing is nearly irrelevant these days. Most resumes are sent via email or text files to begin with but I have found nowhere any example of "fancy" resumes getting more attention than standard ones (at least in the IT world).

with that said, I will say that your resume is a great place to start from. Most standard resumes are strictly an employment history so the writer has given very little thought to how to list their skills. In your case, it looks like you have just got a lot of combining and sorting to do to get this resume on to a single page. Good luck!

I read through this thread to get a idea of how to go about writing my resume. Turns out I'd rather just use jmroberts70's example and go from there. I am a first year student in college, looking for a summer intership position at a company doing java programming or similar.

Take a look at this and give what advice you can. My cover letter isn't something I'm particularly satisfied with, but comment about that as well.

(1) I'm having a little bit of trouble with organizing the Skills section to make it appear cohesive with the rest of the document. Any suggestions or is it good as is?

(2) After reading this resume, do you have a clear idea of what sort of skills I have and what experience corresponds to those skills?

(3) Most of my computer knowledge has come through self learning, while customer/employee interaction is obviously through working. Are those ideas also presented in a concise manner? Should they be even mentioned?

(4) What questions would you have for me? Any skills I would probably need proof of or that you would want me to expand on at an interview or on the resume?

(5) Should I keep on my high school under "Education.."?

Thanks for your time.
