IT Resume Thread

Three paragraphs is what I shoot for. Tell them who you are, how you found the position, why you're interested and what sparked your attention/what made you think the position was good for you in the first paragraph.

In the second paragraph, pick 2-3 requirements/expectations/qualifications from the posting and talk about how you're 120% rad about all of those things. Make sure you provide concrete examples (that are backed up by your resume) instead of just saying "yo, I'm rad as fuck at AD".

Third paragraph thanks them for their time and consideration, offer a very brief cause -> effect sort of deal about why your experiences make you an awesome choice for their opening as well as lets them know that you're totally interested and will be contacting them by __ method before __ date to discuss the opportunity further.

I understand that more often than not that last part won't be feasible because you don't have any direct contact info. In that case, I generally put something like:

The last part isn't optimal because you're leaving the ball in their court, but honestly, with any company larger than a hundred people or so, you're going to have a difficult time finding out direct contact information for the HR rep or hiring manager without an inside source. (If you can get an inside source, this is gold. Really, this insider should email your resume & contact info directly to the hiring manager without your involvement. Some people get offended if someone gives out their work contact info to a rando without permission)

But I AM rad as fuck with AD! Seriously, thanks for the advice man.

Why do you want to stay in Okinawa? The Japanese want America off the island, and the reputation of the Marines has been badly soiled by the actions of the troops there. If you like it there, that's great, but it seems like you'd have a far more receptive job market stateside.

My girlfriend lives there. And yeah i know there's a lot more jobs stateside or overseas (afghan) but i love her and i'll mop floors for a living if i have to just to live there.

I don't think that's true; it's just that nobody who lives in Okinawa is here to answer you.

How would a knowledge of Japanese culture be helpful, or even relevant?

Lots of formatting problems; mostly, line breaks that happen at odd times. You might use bold text or font size to draw attention to different sections and headings.

Maybe it's personal preference, but "08/'01" is a crummy date format. I'd write something more readable, like "August 2001".

Your resume doesn't tell me much detail about your experience. You're team lead at hosting.com, for instance, but we don't see how large your team is. Your resume implies that you're really not a team lead; you're "assisting with". Seems like you're a technical lead and not a managerial lead (and also not both, then), but you resume doesn't make that clear.

"Hostmysite employee's" is a pretty bad typo. No apostrophie is needed here, and you previously wrote hostmysite was now hosting.com. You also say "administrate" when you mean "administer" -- otherwise, you're mixing verb tense.

But most importantly, I don't know what it is you do. You're administering and managing and creating servers, which is clear. How many? How many per month? Sounds like you're involved with working on servers, but you're not doing any scripting. To me, that means you aren't any good at automating anything with tools or scripts, which seems like you've not progressed much over your 14 years of experience.

Your Brandywine section is a little better as you explain the scope of your work.

The second page is blank. The third page is indented further and in a different pattern than the first page.

I hope that helps.

Thanks. That's actually one of my rushed resumes, I'm trying to get get a format that works well while putting in enough detail. Problem as you may have noticed is that Since being at my latest gig I've been through 5 different positions and I'm not sure how to get that onto the resume.

You hit the nail right on the head with the Team Lead stuff. I'm not a TL in the true sense, I do everything including management but I'm not so far up there that I can be considered a manager.

Regarding scripting I've done some however the majority of the work I've done has kept me away from that and the past 6 years now I've done close to no scripting / automation in a traditional sense. Most now is working on templates / baseline configurations that are roled out to VM's.

Another question. When listing items, say networking; would you list all the hardware you've dealt with or just leave a blanket statement? For example I don't think that listing that I've worked with the following would be beneficial: Juniper firewalls and switches, Linksys switches and firewalls, Netgear switches and firewalls, Dlink switches and firewalls, etc....

I find my work is much easier than writing this resume!

That resume didn't pop to me. I would highlight your experience and degree, and on skills maybe quantify your programing expertise a bit more. Then reorder that section so the things like word, etc are not listed so highly. If I'm looking for someone I expect they know the office suite, but dont need it on a resume. Takes up way too much space

Which you're doing manually and repeatedly? It's not about your resume, it's about your career -- I'm concerned because you're not showing much growth.

People seem to like to enumerate things, but what does that tell someone reading your resume? Configuring Netgear equipment isn't much different than configuring DLink equipment. Managing Juniper equipment is more interesting because it's more powerful, and you're using JunOS to do it.

But what are you really doing when you work on this equipment? You need to understand the underlying networking principals in orer to get the configuration work done right. Which protocols do you know and understand? Routing protocols, or just enabling and disabling ports? Explain those, and explain your level of involvement in the work. Are you just deploying a configuration that someone else gave you and said: do this to all the building switches"? Or are you designing and implementing the network topology yourself and implementing it of your own design? Obviously, these two paths are very different levels of work, and your resume is not clearly telling me which you're doing.

Agreed. Sadly my position did not / does not grant me much ability to do this since my primary goal was to ensure servers were up and running and if to figure out why. Eventually when we got around to doing Virtualization I was then ability do do some scripting to automate the process but we then got around to designing a system that would do that via API directly from a web interface, so that stopped and it's been like that ever since.

I was in the running to move to a department that would have allowed me to do more automation however it was deemed that I was to valuable and for me to move away from my current department would cause a gap in support and leadership so I wasn't able to move to the other department.

As such this is why I setup a VMware ESXi server with Active Directory at home. However since I don't have the ability to setup a Vcenter yet I can't do any automation scripting.

I know that automation has been a big issue but it's not the end be all, still I would love to brush up on my skills but as I mentioned my current role does not allow that.

And lastly I appreciate the criticism, Thanks!

Some of the job offerings do point out "Microsoft Office" knowledge as a prerequiste. From what my advisors tell me, it's better safe than sorry to put it in there than leave it out. But you're right about prioritizing my programming skills over everything else. I'll re-organize this.

How do you mean "highlight" the experience and degree? The problem is that my experience is limited. I've not had a single internship related to my field of study by the time I graduated. The only thing I can really offer is my ability and eagerness to learn and adapt quickly along with the knowledge gained through course studies.

I feel slightly hopeless knowing that my limited experience is the wall that I have to overcome somehow. Perhaps my cover letters are supposed to really make or break my chances.

Thanks for your help.

Just wanted to get some feedback on my resume tht I'm working on. I've decided that after nearly 7 years at my current job that it's time to ind something a little more challenging or at least allows me to expand my skill set.

Google docs broke my formatting btw ;)

Thanks in advance

Excuse the late response but I wanted to take the time to write out a proper response.

I assume the awkward line breaks are because of formatting but how about bullets and numbering in your Hosting.com listing?

First, be extremely careful with your spelling and grammar. You use apostrophes incorrectly ("built custom pc's that enabled") and you're not typing out the word "PC" and manufacturer names correctly. The VMware name has the first two letters capitalized. "Technical" is spelt wrong in bullet eight of Hosting.com.

I think you should try and rewrite your bullet points. They do not flow well and I think you can better group them so that related bullet points are one after another. Bullet four under hosting.com could be "Responded to automated alerts on physical and virtual servers using Nagios, ZenOSS and APM monitoring systems. Right after that your bullet point about VPN configuration says "for both customers" what does that mean? The bullet point about firewalls, why say it was for customers? If you were reconfiguring firewalls each customer had then say so. In bullet point thirteen "Physical and Virtual" does not need the capitalization.

In Brandywine, your last bulletpoint should be your first as it quickly summarizes what you did, then you can follow up with a project related bulletpoint like how you were part of a Windows 98 to Windows 2000 migration. Your second bullet point there should start with "Performed server and desktop data..."

Your consultant role at A&O.. We all know what a wireless network does and what it's good for. One bullet point is fine, "Implemented office wireless network and built desktop workstations to customer specifications." It doesn't matter much that they were burning DVDs.

PCConnect, all four bullet points kind of say the same thing. Also I find in my older jobs I just put one bullet point in unless I led or was a part of a very important project. (Think of putting not only what you were asked to do but the major projects you were a part of) In fact on this section the first and last bullet point say the exact same thing and you spell troubleshooting wrong.

Cecil... use Windows instead of Win. Don't capitalize it unless it's a brand name and the company does it or it is an acronym like MS DOS. Your two "provided" bullet points sound similar to each other and you should lead with your "Responsible" bullet point.

I hope this helps and please don't think I'm trying to be a jerk or be harsh.. it's all (hopefully) to help you.

No, not at all. Thanks for the assistance. Yeah, I suck at writing resumes and I'm not to worried about that one as it's just something I threw together quickly. It's just the gathering of past experiences and sorting out which is relevant and what isn't. Typically all my jobs I've been "Jack of all trades" and done just about everything except programming.

So any help I can get is appreciated.

Back to the resume, I think I'm just going to omit the A&O consulting portion, really doesn't say much as to what I did and between my other jobs it's minimal at best. Between the Cecil County, Brandywine and my current help position it really doesn't make any sense to keep it.

Cool.. your resume on your website looked better, you had a cert section and I would consider a relevant skills section where you list specific skills without me having to read about each job. (Shell scripting, server alert management, Active Directory management, Windows migrations) Consider a resume writing service if you are job hunting. I feel like you get a lot in return if you pick a good one and they still make sure to write it in your own style.

That's odd cause the only reason I started to redo the resume was due to someone saying the format with the one of the site was not so good. That's why I didn't update it but I thought it was fine.

Need some help here, not getting ANY responses.

Graduated 3 year comp sci (college) in 2001. Crash happened, have worked retail management since. Don't mind it, but I'm fucking BORED and want to get back into computers full time. That and lately, if you work in retail you get treated like shit.

I've done consulting work on the side for local doctors etc, and might persue that avenue harder. that being said, am I missing something on my resume? I'm not getting any bites at all and desperately need help.

Before I give you the resume rundown, where are you looking for jobs? Which sites do you have profiles on and which staffing agencies/recruiters have you contacted?

Your resume is pretty much content-free. You claim to be "fluent" with some OSes, but you don't explain in what regard; I guess it's as an administrator of such systems, but maybe it's as a user. Claiming fluency of a very large operating system like Windows Server is dangerous as it involves lots of different facets -- most notably networking, scripting, and Active Directory.

You also claim some very basic network experience. But after reading your resume, I can't guess what it is you want to do or how it is that you have done it in the past. If you've got nine years of experience as a "technology specialist", wht is it that you're going to do for your employer? You don't list any projects that you've completed, don't describe their breadth or scope, and don't tell the person reading your resume anything useful about your skills.

Your education section seems to say you spent some time at college, but doesn't tell me how long, if you're still going, what degree you attained, or what degree you might be pursuing.

For someone who's so senior in the industry, I expect a lot more to be related in the resume. You've only had one position, which is good and stable, but you don't describe what it is you've done with that time. I can't guess what you would bring to my organization if you were hired, and I don't know what it is you've done with your time or what kind of trajectory your skillset is following.

I read through a majority of the suggestions posted in this entire thread (dating all the way back to 2005) and have tried to adjust mine accordingly. I've tried to be more detailed and specific. There are some things that I don't know how to approach such as giving metrics -- because I can't claim exactly how much something has improved though I knew that something did improve at least.

Right now, I'm applying to a tech support/customer representative position to a deaf-oriented company so I have my resume geared to that. Please provide any kind of feedback (all of this fits into one page on a .doc/.pdf file).

My main problem is I've been doing consulting work on the side on my own over the last 9 years, and held a retail management job as my full time source of income. I'm trying to get back into the IT area on a full time basis. I'm presently working towards my CCNA just to have SOMETHING on my resume, but I fear I'm not overly hire-able at this point in time. Which is holding true I guess. So I need to find a way to "spruce" up my resume.

I don't understand what you might mean by "spruce up". If you want to lie, then write whatever you want -- you don't need our help and you could find a forum that helps fiction writers.

If you want to tell the truth, then you should enumerate the things you did while you were a consultant. The problem with consultants is that they often don't stick around to see the results of their work. So, if you know how things turned out, be sure to explain and describe that. Any employer would rather find someone who's smart and good at getting results rather than someone who can't many anything happen.

Hope that helps; at this point, I'm not sure what you're looking for.

Anyone know of any IT resume writing services that you would recommend that don't cost an arm and a leg? I know I'm looking for quality but geez, some of them are charging more than I'd charge to do a service call for clients. Apparently the only good writing I do is technical writing ;(

Added my latest attempt at a resume.

You have a lot of work to do. As Mike said, your resume lacks anything a competent IT manager would look for when hiring someone. Your "Experience" section contains no information about any of the experience you supposedly possess. There's no indication of what you have done for the organizations or how you have grown your own skills. Spell it out: explain what you accomplished at each job and how it provided value for the organization. Back up the text in your summary with concrete examples from your current and previous positions.

Does anyone have a template that use to be on Page 1 lol? I just started reading this thread because I need to update my resume for some openings; but all the beginning pages links are down now, which I guess is expected since it was done in 04 lol.

A good friend of mine referred me to this thread after he read my resume as an advice to brush up on my resume and I agree.

All of the personal information has been omitted, and as it is it's four lines into the second page. Formatting seems to be lost here on [H] (locations are on the right end of the page and dates are on the left above the role / degree underneath the dates)

If anybody wants a direct copy to better advise me on my resume, I would gladly send it your way. Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

"American Sign Language", not "America Sign Language".

"Demonstrated the importance of having homework" seems like a pretty useles bullet item.

"Gave feedback" does, too. I gave feedback to The President, but I'm not qualified to do his job. Did the feedback you gave result in any kind of change or benefit?

"Travelled to a conference" reads poorly. "Showcase" isn't a meaningful verb. "Demonstrated products and services at DeafNation EXPO" reads lots better.

"Spearheadded efforts" tells me nothing. "Efforts" can succeed or fail. What was the net effect of your effort?

"Secured a pilot program" means you started something. How did it finish?

Everyone knows AT+T is a Fortune 500 company; it's redundant to point that out. You might say "a Fortune 500 company" and not name AT+T

Write things out. "Video conference / telephony" should be "video conference and telephony". "2+ years" should be "More than two years".

Only two months at Peek? I wouldn't even disclose it; why didn't you stay longer?

Different versions of Windows aren't "various operating systems".

You claim to be adapatable to new development language, but you show zero experience in any development language to this pot.

Great catch - I feel bad, I'm a deaf person myself and I didn't even catch this :/

Now that I think about it, you have a point however I along with another person wrote 20 or so pages making recommendations regarding education for the deaf to the ministry of education. We left the country shortly afterwards, I've no idea of the impact it may have.

Excellent advice

It succeed and the training material materialized and were used. How to incorporate this?

"Secured a pilot program" means you started something. How did it finish?
I only secured it and it was handled by another department, sales department.

Was a short contract job, by chance, my camp counselor is equally short, should I not disclose it?

Different versions of Windows aren't "various operating systems".
They are not? I've included OSX, Unix/Linux in there. How would you word it?

I had limited Java experience in the classroom, I have gone ahead and removed that.

Here's the revised one, it now fits on one page and I have removed the references available upon request. I am not sure whether I should remove the Peek / Camp Taloali entries from my employment history as they may not be relevant?
