Vista SP1 is here!
Today I carried out the most critical SP1 upgrade so far - I upgraded my main system. This is a Core 2 Extreme monster that’s been running Vista Ultimate 64-bit. All the SP1 upgrades I’ve done so far have been 32-bit upgrades. How did the upgrade go? What’s the system like afterwards? Read on.

First, give so you know the landscape, here’s the spec of the system:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor running at 3.2GHz
Abit IP35 Pro Motherboard
4GB of DDR2 800 Ram
2 x WD Raptor drives
MSI 8800 Ultra OC Edition
22" Widescreen
This system scores full marks (5.9) on the Windows Experience Index. This system is fully up-to-date with respect to patches. This system has never had earlier pre-releases of SP1 installed.
OK, so how did the update go? Well, fine. The install process seems to take a while as this took 55 minutes, so the speed of the system doesn’t seem to have much of an effect on how long SP1 takes to install - those planning to install SP1 should put aside at least an hour to install SP1, maybe two. Better to allow for more time and not need it that need extra time and not have it.
While I’ve not carried out any proper benchmarking yet, here are some initial thoughts I have:

Overall, the system feels quicker. There’s a snappy feeling to carrying out tasks (although this system was no slouch under Vista RTM!).
Navigating network shares is a lot faster.
Remote Desktop Connection is a lot better - I can connect to remote machines faster and the experience is noticeably better.
There has been no change to the Windows Experience Index scale - 5.9 is still the top ceiling of the scale.
Recovering from sleep is faster and the system is up and ready t use quicker.
Unknowns at present include:

Overall system stability and reliability.
Gaming performance.
Thoughts?

so basicly the update made a big difference overall with Vista?
Does it improve anything with domain envoirnments?

how bout data transfer times?
Transfer times saw a huge increase, i was really impressed there

I have not tested it in a domain yet, but network share access was a tun faster
What SP1 version was it? Final?

Where did you get it?
No it was not final, this was RC1 that i am one of the 100,000 or so that got it to beta test
Final Release for Vista SP1 is due in Mid March, Microsoft does not have a date set yet, that i know of

What else does everyone else?
RTM was just released a few hours ago to people with MSDN's and such
Test it now!:D

I just downloaded my TechNet Plus/MSDN version. No time to intsall it though.

WTF? It showed up on my Volume Licensing page, but only the 32 bit version. All of my stuff is running 64 bit.

I have one question, is SP1 version specific? The site says Vista Business SP1, would I be able to install in on other versions like Vista Ultimate?

Woot! Thanks for letting us know mate. Going to get it now.

Bah, not on our MSDN, and our Volume License is only the 32bit as well. :(

I got a copy of Vista Ultimate with SP1 at the MS Event, been running it huge difference over pre SP1.

I haven't had done an upgrade yet tho.

I put it on a couple of my test boxes over the past few months...
Small improvements....most annoying were the log in delays...and when manipulating files...(opening/copying). They got a little more normal...but still a delay compared to 2K/XP.

That's about it...nutting to write home about.

I've been running the MSDN versin for the past month or so and its been okay. I tried to install the RTM yesteday and it told me I already had it installed. Of course, I still have the "evaluation" thingy showing up on my desktop still . . . . I only tried it on the Vista Business on my work machine. Will wait to see if WSUS pushes it out . . . .
