This is my first Intel system and I am sooooo freaking lost in the BIOS settings. The proc should be 3Ghz but cpu-id is saying I'm running at 2Ghz.

What am I doing wrong? What settings do I need to change in the BIOS? I'm using an Asus P5QC mobo with P45 chip set.

Disable it if you want. It kicks up to full speed when you go 100% CPU usage. It's meant to save power (and it does), but it can sometimes interfere with overclocking.

333x9=3GHz (stock). Speedstep lowers the multi to 6 (so 333x6=2GHz).

Ok now I'm trying to play around with an over clock. It's running at 3.42Ghz now and I'm looping Prime95 using in place FFTs. I'm also using this crappy heat sink from Fry's until I can get something better ordered from Newegg:

What I want to know is: What is a good program to get accurate readings of my cpu temp? cpu-id and Asus Probe are giving me conflicting results:

CoreTemp, RealTemp, Speedfan or all three just for the hell of it.
 
For 45nm CPUs, Core Temp and Real Temp with the Tjmax set to 100C will give you the most accurate temperatures possible.

Do you guys think 1.2v is overkill for just a 3.4ghz over clock? I spent maybe 4 minutes total getting it so now it's looping Prime over night. I'm gonna start searching through threads and see what others are working with.

1.2V? That's great! Max limit is 1.4V. So you're well under that limit. Assuming that your over night Prime95 session works that is.
 
7 hours so far. 59C core temp according to RealTemp. Can't believe how cool these 45nm chips run because that is such a shitty heat sink I'm using.
