Issue w/my 6800 ULTRA

This is a long-running issue that dates back to the end of January which I haven't yet been able to resolve. I've aquired all the latest drivers, in-fact the only thing I haven't actually done is update my BIOS. Firstly my specs.

AMD Athlon 64 - 3000+
GeForce 6800 ULTRA
ASUS ROCK K8 Combo-Z
1GIG PC3200 Crucial RAM

Ok so what happens basically is whenever I launch a game (which doesn't have a static menu) - my PC will freeze at a black screen for a short while before rebooting itself. When I say static screen, I mean games with the game engine incorporated into the menu (i.e Half Life 2) will not make it that far, but games with a static screen will load up to that point & then crash when I try & start up a game. I've tried three seperate PSU's, the latest being this particular model

I've also left the card with a friend to test out, and he reported no issues with it whatsoever. I'm at a loss as to what the problem might be. Any sugestions?

I would say the issue is your motherboard. I had a ASRock board that simply wouldn't work with some video chipsets (mine was the Radeon 9600), but would work fine with the others. You can try dropping the AGP from 8X to 4X and try again maybe.

I can't confirm that problem, but going cheap on the motherboard often leaves you with a PC that gives you unpredictable results. It's not a flame against you, but AsRock isn't the best brand. I know it's an Asus company, but that stuff isn't built to the same levels of tolerance actual Asus branded products are.

Not to mention the BIOS is different also. As a more positive suggestion though you should install the latest chipset and video drivers if you have not done so. First the chipset, then video.

I would check for AsRock forums and see if others are having this same issue or something similar.

Power supply can be another issue. The 6800Ultra does consume alot of power and if you've got a failing PSU, the problems you are having are a possibility. Cheapo power supplies can have a similar effect as the power output on their 12v rails can suck.

I'm not saying you've got a cheapass PSU or anything, but I didn't see your PSU listed so I have no idea.

Errr what the hell. I just downloaded a demo, Still Life, and the game actually worked.....

Untill I tried to bring up the menu, then it crashed. But the game actually ran....WTF is wrong with my system!

Can anybody confirm this? Is there known issues with my mobo & card?

Look on the ASRock website to see what kind of fixes their updated BIOS have been for. That's how I noticed they were having problems with certain chipsets. I had similar problems. Games would crash whenever it started getting graphically intense (with an ASRock board to boot), so I thought that might be a problem. Did you try the 4x AGP?
