Does the xbox 360, have better graphics than the best gaming pcs out there with; athlon 64 fx 57, nvidia 7800 gtx, ect.

It really depends on the game I think. I played the CoD2 demo at comp usa. It looked nice but I wasn't really blown away. I have seen screen shots of CoD2 at 1600x1200 4xSAA and it looked much more detailed to me. I think it might take them a while to get used to multicore and really tap into the 360's unused resources. In my opinion PC's have the upper hand on consoles. The PC world is constantly growing while consoles decrease over their lifetime.

No, according to anandtech's report, the xbox 360 graphical power is about half of a 7800 GTX 512.

The point is not if the graphics are better than the PC or not, but the games that come with it. I wish that I can play perfect dark zero on the PC but I can't....so got to get the box anyways.

No they do not... microsoft contracted with ATi in order to obtain graphics performance... The chip behind the xbox360's stunning graphics is none other than (drum roll) x850 XT's... ATi simply integrated the chip into the PCB (think of it as a motherboard with the x850 core on the board)... So no, xbox 360 does not have "better graphics" than PC's... no console will ever have better graphics than PC's.

um...no. if anything it's closer to a x1800xt than an x850

It's afterall the r500 chipset powering 360.

Go read that article on anandtech.

Essentially you're both right.

It's actually an X800 Chip with 48 unified pipelines
X800XT has roughly 22 unified pipelines (16 pixel, 6 vertex?)

2X the pipes doesn't make the Xbox360 2X the X800.
I think it's faster than the X850XT but slower than the X1800XT....it's somewhere in between.

agreed...cant stand up to a pair of 7800gtx's or x1800xt's. although it is the best looking console out there for the moment.

p.s. wonder how many of these threads we will see by the end of week, heh.

You guys are forgetting the E-RAM which should boast performance by a bit as well. Nothing like having 10MB of supper fast Built on a CPU process so its more like cache cept running faster then the video chip itself RAM to help boost performance.

Let's say a game is brought using all three cores of the XBOX360's cpu efficently and using all of the features of the C1, yes it will look damn good and be damn fast but comparing desktop pc's with consoles is like chalk and cheese. Consoles are designed for a specific purpose, PC's aren't thus the hardware (console) is geared towards a certain direction

XBox 360 does SM 3.0, so it can't be an X800 core

I'd hope a $400 box can't match a $1000+ rig.

If I'd known the Xbox360 would whip my A64 3700+ & 7800GT SLI, then I wouldn't have wasted all my money. But that's obviously not the case.

Does CoD2 run at 720p or 1080i? Anyone know?

I need a VGA adapter so I can hook up my x360 to my monitor...

No. The xbox only has the capability of 2xAA. I'm not sure what type of AF it has.

Update: I just read the article OCP did on the 360 and it says capable of 4xMSAA. I watched the G4 speacial last night and the VP of Microsoft said it had 2xAA. Huh I guess I don't know.

It is FSAAx4 however for some reason it is now only x2 which confuses me because isn't it effectively 'free' from the EDRAM?

It probably does match a 1k rig, but from what I've been hearing, its because consoles are sold at a loss (with the exception of Nintendo... right?). Over time, the revenue makes up for that loss and then they would generate profits (I dunno if the econ terms I'm using are right, so correct me if I'm wrong). So its not hard to imagine the 360 costing up to the thousands if they were sold for instant profits.

But remember, these things are designed run games better than anything else. I use PCs for just about everything and not just games, so I don't feel like I'm wasting my money. I would if I was building a PC solely for gaming though, but that's just me :D.

the reason people are seeing a discrepancy in the amount of AA it can do is that it is possible for 4xAA on the 360, and M$'s original claim was that ALL titles on the xbox would be done with 4xAA. Then they decided that wasn't a reasonable claim, and then said that all titles will be done with a minimum of 2xAA and all developers are told to write the games with this is mind.

It does not, I played it on my friends HDTv, it did not. Then [H] review says it does not either.

"The logic and embedded DRAM on the daughter die is what allows the Xbox 360 GPU to essentially offer "free" anti-aliasing, which Microsoft enforces through requiring developers to support a minimum of 2X AA in all Xbox 360 titles. Although we were originally told back at E3 that all Xbox 360 titles would support 4X AA, it seems that the statement has since been revised to 2X or 4X AA. We're not certain why the change was made, as 2X and 4X are both effectively "free" on the GPU, but there may be something we're missing."- Anandtech

PC hardware will advance, while the XBox 360's hardware remains static over the course of its lifetime.

Though by developers learning better how to tap more potential out of it games could perform and look better over time on it, so games will evolve, while the hardware will not.

On PC's both evolve, games and hardware.

It's really apples and oranges, a console system for playing games and a PC for playing games are different beasts.

chewy is teh mad secs

i'd say you would be argueing about its "power" all day, its really a different style of GPU, being unified architectur, EDRAM, and acting as a northbridge all together, i think really don't think you'd compare it to anything

to tell you the truth this chip to seems to be as life long as the gpu put into the xbox, it gets me excited because the xbox had exceptional looking games through out its entire life, hopefully developers like programming for it too

Yeah, as we see with some xbox games the software developers are pushing the envelope. Right now I am not impressed with the xbox 360, but maybe later on.

In addition, I use my computer for more than just gaming. I use it for work, surfing the web, and other things with a xbox 360 all I can do is game. Plus if I buy a xbox 360 I will need a computer anyway. ;)

I will go out on a limb here and say that a console will NEVER be able to out perform a full blown gaming rig.

Yep, I said Never........ :D

Yeah, consoles are sold at a loss and revenue is generated by software/peripherals. Especially Nintendo, since they swamp their systems with a ton of 1st party titles.

But remember, these things are designed run games better than anything else. I use PCs for just about everything and not just games, so I don't feel like I'm wasting my money. I would if I was building a PC solely for gaming though, but that's just me :D.

That's true, it probably does match a $1000 PC, but then again, I don't remember how much I paid to build my PC... :D

Let's just say, I hope a $400 box doesn't slap around my $2500+ PC (or as mentioned before, a "full-blown gaming rig").

Well lets see go out and buy an Xbox for $400 or go buy a new graphics card for $400. That sounds like a no brainer to me.... I would pick the graphics card. My point is that people complain about computers and say you have to upgrade all the time.... Well you have to upgrade everytime a new Xbox comes out. It is no different. My 8 year old son's Xbox collects dust in his room. When his friends come over they play on the computers. To each his own but I prefer the computer.

How cute. :p

You're a cool pap, right? Let your boy play the bloodiest games ever. My dad actually got me playing Wolfenstien3D when I was 6 or so. :D

Very true. We've seen this in the earliest console games in existence. Take a look at the first Mario Bros on the NES compared to Mario Bros 3. Or early SNES games compared to the later ones. A lot of it was dependant on having more talented artists etc, but things such as adding new "add-ons", like SDD1, C4, DSP1/2, OBC1, Seta10, SPC7110, and Super FX chips also added a lot of new things to the hardware that was initially impossible.

Well not sure about letting him play the bloodiest games ever but he does like Star Wars Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy. I think he has gone through Jedi Outcast 6 times.
