I have an Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 on which one core reads 4 degrees Celsius higher on one core than the other, so I'm wondering if that is normal or if it could be caused by my H/S not being seated properly. I'm also wondering if a load temp of 40 on one core and 44 on the other is acceptable when being cooled by a Thermalright Xp-90 H/S.

Normal, see it all the time, Acutally your spread is on the low side. Keep in mind even at idle in windows, just running coretemp/realtemp the computer does not exactly distribute the work evenly between the cores. Add that to manufacturing tolerances etc. 4 C difference is nothing to worry about. 10C or more would be worth looking at the heatsink mount and even then it still could be just a cpu thing. Posts reporting 8-10C after remounting the HS several times are common.

Run it with load/stress software and the difference will likey be reduced to a couple of C. Thats the real test for a good heatsink mount. If a core is way off then, you would need to look at the heatsink mount/thermal paste application.

Well thanks for the info :) , I've already stressed my CPU out for a good 24 hours and the gap was never more than 4 degrees so I guess I'm good then :D .

I feel rather silly now actually for being so paranoid when every ounce of intelligence was screaming at me that it was probably within the range of normal for a CPU with two cores which operate at different levels to have two different temperatures, I'm gonna' blame the paranoia on the amount of catastrophic hardware failures I've experienced though :p .

I was one of those people who RMA'd a borked Maxtor HD and got one back that decided that catching on fire was one of its features.
