I've got a philips sound card (it was the cheapest 5.1 at frys that day) and it wants me to connect this wire from it to the cd-rom. It is a really thin wire, but its ugly as all hell in my nicely wired case. So do i really need this wire? Any clue what its for?

I read somewhere that it's the audio cable for playing DVDs/audio cds...but I think things have changed because I've been able to watch a DVD even though I forgot to plug in the cable.
 
Why not...if you run into audio problems then you know you'll need it. It won't stop your comp from POSTing or anything...
 
I would.
Enable digital audio for your drive and you are set....I havent used one of those cables in a long long time
 
This wire is a left over from back in the day when CD-ROM readers were first introduced. An early Pentium or a 486 PC couldn't handle the transfer of the digital audio over the slow PIO 1 IDE interface. Then came along DMA and with that the CPU wasn't tied up with disk transfers. So, your CD-ROM reader did the digital to analog conversion and it plugged right into an input jack in your soundcard. Just discard the wire.
 
lol i remember this annoying wire.. i found out some time ago then i don't need it and my drive was already digital enabled so i discard it as well. It was quite annoying to see it go across my case
