A family member is still rocking a Dimension 2400 and wanted to upgrade but didn't have the funds for a good used replacement. I have a system that I gave them to use as a donor while I did a restore of their system and they wanted the donor now but I couldn't part with it for nothing. Just looking to get some other opinions to see what you would do.
2400 Specs (Their current system):
CPU- Intel Celeron 2.4Ghz/400FSB
RAM- 512MB (2x256 DDR 333Mhz)
HDD- IDE 40GB
ROM- IDE CD-ROM (Defective, needs replacement)
PSU- 200W or 250W (didn't look)
Donor system:
CPU- C2Q 9300
MB- OEM (FX7026)
RAM- 4GB (2x2GB DDR2 800Mhz)
HDD- SATA 160GB WD Caviar Blue
ROM- IDE DVD-ROM
PSU- 350W
CASE- Generic Aluminum
My offer of $75 (Quick price lookup/make up, I came up with about $193):
CPU- C2D E6600 ($50)
MB- OEM (FX7026) ($30)
RAM- 4GB (2x2GB DDR2 800Mhz) ($50)
HDD- SATA 160GB WD Caviar Blue ($20)
ROM- IDE DVD-ROM ($3)
PSU- 350W ($30)
CASE- Generic Aluminum ($10)
I don't want to recommend throwing some money at ram when it is just going to be a lost cause in a few months-year. I would want to max the board out for the price/performance gain (2GB max) but its ~$20each chip ( I would search the FS threads to see if I could find cheaper of course) and I would need to replace CD-Rom (would be DVD-Rom and obviously cheap).
They do not use it for anything intensive. Basically email, news/flash and FB. I think the Donor is extreme overkill and still cost ~$100 by itself. (cheapest BIN on fleabay was $125). The cheapest for the e6600 was $45 and I think would do them very well for a good while.
What would you do in this scenario?
BTW- Side note. I originally was going to give them this donor but had issues imaging the night before.
CPU- Intel P4 3.0Ghz w/HT 800FSB
MB- Asrock brand (forget the spec.)
RAM- 2GB (2x1GB DDR 400Mhz)
HDD- IDE 120GB
ROM- IDE DVD-ROM
PSU- 250W
GFX- PNY 6600GT AGP 8x
Thanks,
Outlaw
