The pic is fairly self explanatory, but here is some background. I built this computer about 2 weeks ago. this started happening a few days ago.

sometimes this is all you will see scrambled then the blue "welcome screen" will be fine and windows will boot normally. But then sometimes it doesn't "fix" it self. and windows will boot all scrambled like you see in the picture. Only other thing I can add is that yesterday, the entire computer crashed (no bsod or anything) and re-booted. I have not touched it since. just trying to get some opinions where to go from here.

hardware is as follows:
Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L
CPU: Intel Q6600
RAM: 2GB OCZ Platinum DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
Graphics Card: ASUS EN9600GT GeForce 9600 GT 512MB
Power Supply: APEVIA ATX-CW500WP4 500W ATX
Other: DVD R/W, 7 in 1 card reader, 2 120mm fans, Hyper TX2 CPU cooler

My VX550 came today and I installed it with out a hitch, first boot up it did the same thing then booted normally, restarted, did it again, restarted booted fine, restarted, booted fine. so my question is should I RMA my video card? or just ride it out for a while and keep an eye on it?

Installed new video card, same thing.
so I swaped out the RAM with the "extra" that I ordered with the new video card. FIXED!!!
So a big thank you to the person who suggested it, because I didn't even think about RAM until you mentioned it. new egg is going to love me with with all this RMAing

If that picture is hosted on a site or account that you own, then yes you can hotlink images. I cannot see that image at all. Keeps taking me back to this thread.

Anyway, that is a piece of shit power supply. Apevia makes some of the world's worst PSUs out there. Even it wasn't the cause of the problem, I still recommend replacing that PSU ASAP unless you want your PC to keep slowly dying.

For your needs, this PSU is all that you need:
Corsair 450VX 450W PSU - $70

When you replace the PSU and still see those artifacts (guessing here), that Apevia PSU may have already corrupted your video card.

"APEVIA ATX-CW500WP4 500W ATX " seems to be your problem. Apevia makes terrible PSU, and I highly doubt that it's actually 500W. Judging from the picture, I think it could be GPU not getting enough power. Get another PSU and see what happens.

I recommend against that PSU. It only has 36A on the +12V rail, which is pitiful for a 620W PSU considering that the Corsair 450VX 450W PSU I listed above has 33A on the +12V rail and is $65 cheaper. The Corsair 550VX 550W has 40A on the +12V rail, more than the 36A of that Liberty 620W, and retails for $85. The Corsair 750TX, which can be found for around $100 these days, has 60A on the +12V rail.

So in terms of price to power offering ratio, that Enermax Liberty PSU is a total ripoff. It's a decent PSU but considerably and heavily overpriced.

Agreed, that PSU is way overpriced.
 
I agree I made a mistake on the PSU and regret ever buying it... I will replace it eventually. however how soon eventually is depends on weather or not the psu is the source of my problems.

That happened to me when I had a 9700 pro. PS wasnt sufficient and it did that. The card was flawless.

2 conflicting answers, I don't know which to replace.
 
Looks like you'll have to replace both anyway. That Apevia is damaging your PC and the video card artifacting is probably a sign of that. Either way, for sure you'll have to replace the PSU since, again, Apevia is a POS PSU maker that overrates their PSUs (calling it a 900W PSU when it's really a 600W PSU, etc) and even then uses poor designs.
 
Replace the PSU. If the problem doesn't go away, then RMA the video card. You'll have to replace the PSU anyway, so you may as well do it now. Plus, there's really no way to determine the source of the problem without trying different parts.
 
Those are good, but the corsair PSUs can be found for cheaper on buy.com. Also, if you want to go modular, you should think about getting the corsair HX520 or HX620.
 
I concur with BanDeodorant: Either of the PSUs you chose are good choices for your system. However you can get the Corsair PSUs for significantly cheaper from buy.com, amazon.com, and provantage.com
 
i went with the corsair from amazon. hopefully this will solve my problem. I'm still going to RMA the apeva through newegg. I got screwed on that one. thanks for the help guys.
 
Okay, then it sounds like your GPU is fried. RMA it when you get the chance. I think it's faulty ram on the GPU, may have been fried due to that cheap GPU :eek:. Anyways, at least you understand why they say don't go cheap on the PSU lol.
 
Don't forget to check the RAM in the system as well. Bad voltages from the PSU easily damage low-voltage rail parts like the RAM (3.3V rail has lower tolerance than the 12V one). I had a bad stick of RAM which caused graphics corruption and system freeze as well. Replacing it fixed all these issues.
 
ordered a new graphics card, and RMA'd the old one (new egg was awesome as usual) also ordered 2 more gigs of ram, just in case those are bad too (and if not I wanted 4 gigs of ram anyway :) )

Did you already replace the PSU? If the PSU is providing dirty power to the RAM, it could even damage the new RAM and cause the same graphics issues again...
