And man oh man do these D0's go like hell compare to the C0's.
that should be a good chip; not sure why its not doing well
I am not sure about the batch you listed, but it seems the 920 D0's are needing more voltage to get to 4.0 and beyond when compared to the Xeon series.
Jeez man, 1GHz overclock on stock volts is nice. My C0 920 couldn't do that. Right now I am testing this Xeon at 4.42GHz (221*20) with 1.31v. Seems to be going well so far, but man these things cook once you break 4.2GHz or so. Damned furnace I tell ya!
If you want to see an almost instant 10°C drop in temps, disable HT.
also to pc user; I have noticed the difference is when you put a full load on the cores; I do not think you can really compare idle temps in this case. I idle at about the same as you, but once I put 8 threads of WCG and 100% load across all cores; emps go up 30-40c
are you saying 5-7c from idle to load?
people what does this all mean? i have an "old" first generation i7 board. will this new "stepping" "thing" mean i can't buy newer i7 cpus, yet to be released?
Not in the 'least bit. A stepping is just a revision or newer batch of a CPU, nothing really changes as far as functionality or compatibility, sometimes they're just a lil' bit more efficient (they run cooler and/or require less voltage to run at the same speeds), other times not even that changes. Most CPUs go thru several steppings, probably half a dozen thru their lifetime if it's in production long enough.
If you get one... great if not...it's not the end of the world. Truthfully, you can get to 1Ghz over with just about any 920 chip.
Getting sick of "must have D0 or won't buy" crap because the 920's are a gift from the Intel gods and stepping... really at the end of the day is a luxury but not a deal breaker for OC'ing.
