I mean all of a sudden they can't keep their cards in stock lol. Must be a big boost in sales for them

Hopefully they put the extra cash towards better stock coolers :p

It's a win all around!

AMD gets sales.

Consumers essentially get free hardware after 1-2 months.

Don't get better than this!

Is it really that easy? I never got into mining...

I do have access to free electricity also.

I have a spare i7 920 rig I could use.

Seems like I would need to do a lot of research as I know nothing.

How to mine, where to sell, sell or hold... etc... work work work

i have a 280x sitting on my porch at home, waiting to join the my two 290's, and my two 7970s.

Also have another 7970 inbound so I will have six GPU's running - that's about all I'm willing to do at the current time. I don't have the guts to go and wire my house up for 240V outlets and spend 10K on hardware along with 500 dollar/month electric bills.

I'm happy with making a few extra K that will help me pay off my car earlier than expected.

I do need to do some optimizing though - my R9 290's are both getting right under 800kHash/sec each (avg in cgminer shows 1.585M/hash), my two 7970s are putting out about 650-670khash each in my living room PC.

Would be nice to get the 290s up to 850khash, and the 7970s to 700k. Do that for all my GPU's and i'd be looking at an extra 300khash for doing nothing :)

I cannot imagine a more risky investment right now than BitCoin. So much speculation.

I mean come on, look at this!

500% value increase in 1 month? LOL

But it is not just Bitcoin anymore. These cryptocurrencies and mining are here to stay in my opinion. Now speculating which coins will last and which will crash well thats the fun :p

What are you talking about all of a sudden? This isn't the first time it's happened.

Not according to this

The issue with introducing ASICs to Bitcoin is such that the higher total hashing power of the Bitcoin Community, the harder it gets to generate part of a Bitcoin (without outright purchasing) with the same individual power. Assuming the global value of Bitcoin stays the same, it is the proportion of the total hashing power that determines your output. In a mindset of every man for themselves, the more you invest in hashing power, the more of a proportion of the total hashing power you have and thus the more ‘money’ you can earn. (At this juncture I would like to add that it can be a fool’s errand to enter the Bitcoin game purely on the suggestion that you can earn your money back – at current rates buying a high end GPU will take over 12 months to pay off after electricity prices, even more with increasing hashing power.)

Everyone loves a gold rush! The guys selling the shovels are going to be the real winners in the end.

So why are nVidia cards not good for it? or are there certain nvidia cards that are good?

It's something to do with instructions these chips support.

I think there's a binary function that AMD cards can do in one clock cycle that takes NV cards 3 cycles to do complete or something along those lines.

I wonder if it's this kind of efficiency that Mantle is going to leverage?

LOL, I actually find it pretty funny that AMD is selling the majority of their cards to people who don't even play PC games now. Hey, good for them though.

I find it hilarious that they are selling tons of cards and making tons of money. I hope you do understand that profit = more money for the company = higher chance of funding and thus developing better drivers/products. I bet you are happy you sold off your 7970's months ago which could have been making you money now.

Indeed! I actually don't care about the financial welfare of nvidia or AMD, I just care about the quality of the product in my PC. That said, one look at the stock/market cap situation of AMD compared to the stock/market cap situation of nvidia....I dunno, doesn't look that rosy for AMD.

Like I said though, good for AMD. I'm happy for them. Even though their consumers aren't PC gamers now, apparently. ;) I just found irony in that situation. Hopefully they can put some of that money towards better products, R+D and better coolers.

If there were any worthwhile new games out, I would be playing them. But I actually get more fun out of mining than I do playing games right now. It's kind of like modding Skyrim/Oblivion. It's a process that is fun and sometimes even more exciting than actually playing the game then.

It's starting to get kind of boring in the video cards section here too, the excuses are getting really lame. I wonder what kind of stuff will come along with the next gen 20nm cards. OMG THE COOLER LOOKS NICER. Oh wait, that was this generation :p

Amazing for AMD:
APUs in the consoles
Mantle in games
Mining GPUS

On the issue of mining: This reminds me of the Dutch Tulip Bubble of 1637...

You guys should look at the past of bitcoin. There have been many lows and highs last I checked. It will drop like a rock eventually again, but then it will probably go up again.

Price isn't the issue. Difficulty is. Because of mining ASICs, it would take literally 1 year of 24/7 mining on a 7970 to recover the cost of the GPU alone. ASICs made bitcoin mining worthless, so everyone went to alternative crypto currencies. Such as litecoin. Bitcoin mining itself is worthless, but litecoin is still worth it, for now.

I don't know if litecoin ASICs are in the works, but at least litecoin seems to be way more "stable" than bitcoin for the time being...

Anandtech has an article on bitcoin mining ASICs that went live this week, it's an interesting read.

I know, but the crash would affect the other currencies. And if Litecoin prices drop, you bet people will stop mining it for a while(the ones who just joined recently for the quick profit), which will make it easier to mine for those who continue through the low. Then eventually when it goes up, those people will make out with the real profits.

Ah, I see what you're saying. Yeah that makes sense. I shoulda kept those 7970s last year. ;)

Bitcoin is gonna stay up for a while as long as the big investors are in it. Its a global stock market with absolutely ZERO REGULATION. Difficulty increases, but if you have the big dollars you can easily annihilate the competition. I read a recent article that stated that investors from the big names JP, GS, RBI, are all investing in this new found economic heaven, and if they invest those mom, pops, orphans, children (this was the exact wordage on the article BTW) are gonna be pushed out.

However if you started when Bitcoin was immature then, please donate here :)

That's kind of why I'm mining middlecoin until I make a small profit/cover expenses, and after that mine some random coins I think might become big in the future(such as stablecoin) and hoard those for speculation purposes :)

I got into it for a little while when they were worth 50 bucks. Damn, I wish I had stayed into it. My GT 240 mining for 2 hours managed to get $4 worth if Bitcpins, if I had kept mining I could have $1000 after several weeks.

Only market that hurts here are the used card buyers. When the price drops again and people start selling their Radeon cards in droves, it will be hard for 2nd hand buyers to trust the cards. I would rather take a dirty card from a house full of cats and smokers than one of those poor AMD cards that get pushed to their absolute limits and run 100% 24/7,

To chartists, that looks like a textbook double top pattern around 1200 with bearish divergence (if momentum indicators like CCI is applied).
