For the last two years I've used SpeedSwitchXP on my laptop to keep my Intel Core Duo T2300 from reducing its clock frequency. It definitely used to work fine but recently I have noticed that my PC is lagging in a game that it never used to lag in at all (this is PC speed lag, not internet lag). I just checked System Properties and it says my CPU is running at 980MHz when it should be at 1.67GHz. I opened SpeedSwitchXP and it's still set to Maximum Performance when on AC power (which my laptop always is, battery is dead) and Power Options says it's using "SpeedSwitch Control".

So...why is my CPU staying at 980MHz when it clearly needs to be at maximum speed? I've seen it jump to 1.23GHz and 1.67GHz ocassionally but I checked it whilst the game was lagging and it was at 980MHz. Since the game only runs on one core, I'm guessing that it sees the CPU in use being at ~55% or something and decides to leave it at the lower setting...but the whole point is that SpeedSwitchXP is supposed to alleviate this and it appears to be doing nothing. Interestingly, the CPU speed reported in SpeedSwitchXP is 1.67GHz but I can't believe that because there's nothing else that could be causing the lag (turned off anti-virus, shut down all other programs, nothing in Task Manager using CPU, virus and spyware scans were clean, etc.).

Any ideas?

Last week was pretty cold and it happened then too...

CPU temperature is 58-62 degrees when the game is running.
 
You could always go into your BIOS and disable speedstep completely. Sounds like you never use power saving features anyway.
 
Disabling SpeedStep leaves the CPU at its lowest setting from what I've read.
 
not from my experience, you could always re-enable it after, anyway.
 
Just checked the BIOS, disabling SpeedStep leaves the CPU at its lowest setting. :(
