Is Radeon 6970 overkill?

Are there any limitations I should be aware of with a 6970? Just bougjt one online and have yet to install.
 
It's an outstanding card. I've got mine OC'ed underwater and it barely breaks a sweat. Of course, I'm only running 1920x1080. Overkill? Not likely. It's all about how you use it and abuse it.
 
I have two 6970 running games at 5760x1080 and it's not enough. I'm thinking about grabbing a 6990 for quad-fire but that's a bit too much considering the new 7000 series will be come out soon. :mad:

Yeah, running 1920x1080. Playing BF3, BF2, MW3, MW2, Brink (cough cough) and how could I forget my all time favorite: Killing Floor!

Also doing basic home movie editing via Windows Movie Maker w my new Hero cam.

In all seriousness, BF3 is kicking my 5850's butt.

Why not wait for 7000 series? One 6970 is great but the new 7970 will be better.
 
I have a 6950 unlocked and overclocked to 6970 spec and get 14 FPS in DCS A-10C at times. So no... definitely not overkill.
 
Not overkill at all. I'm running two 6950's in crossfire at 1920x1080. All it means for me is I can max out the games I play and toss in more eye-candy without having to worry about lower framerates. Except Skyrim :(.

BF3 is a killer, so no the 6970 is definitely not overkill. You should be able to run all the settings on BF3 and get decent framerates with that card. I know it stresses some of the lower models at ultra settings as you have probably already experienced. I had a friend's machine with a highly OC'd 460GTX 2GB and BF3 was just crushing it. I could run everything at High with 2xAA at around 45 FPS, but that was about it, I couldn't run it at Ultra with decent FPS. And at 45 FPS it was fluid, but still not quite what I would have liked. I have 2 unlocked 6950s in CFX and haven't really had any issues with games (except some CFX perfomance issues with Skyrim which are getting better). I have not tried BF3 yet on my system, but all those other games run well on it, even before i unlocked the 6950 and added a second card.

So yeah, the 6970 should be a solid pick if you are playing BF3. I don't think you will have too many limitations with the 6970 except maybe some later driver releases compared to the Nvidia cards, but with single GPU, I doubt you will see too many issues. The main issues usually reside around crossfire and eyefinity performance.
 
No such thing as overkill :) I have 2 x 6970s that I play at 2560x1600. I haven't had any performance issues with BF3, SC2, and pretty much any other game I've tried I can play at max settings, and that is WITH poor scaling for whatever reason on most games. And when I say poor I'm talking around 25-40% for each card. That only seems to have started with the latest drivers, but I still get 60fps minimum so I guess don't really care.
 
Since this card supports dual monitors, how does that come into play? Am I just asking for more headaches or disappointment? In otherwords, can I just hook up another 24" monitor and play BF3 with a wider peripheral view?

(If this belongs in another thread please let me know)
 
I can vouch that dual monitors for anything other than multitasking is a pain in the butt. Not to mention you'll have two bezels right in the middle of your fov. I both mine only when drafting. Otherwise, I turn the other one (right) off.

Resolution is the most important part. My HD 5970 was stupid fast at 1920x1200. Now at 2560x1600 it feels "average". Also the crossfire scaling is better on the 69xx series form what I understand.

Any guesstimations on how a 6970 would do in BF3 at 2560x1330 with a Phenom x4 955?
 
Sorry but while BF3 might be playable on a 6970 at higher settings, I can promise you, it's a hellva lot better under crossfire with 2 x 6950's or 2 x 6970's. It screams and there is a world of difference in fun-factor, game play. For me at least.

My system is almost identical to yours.

Upgrading from an HD5850 to a 6970 was a great investment! It allowed me to go from High to Ultra on BF3, with better framerates!

Yeah, you could wait for HD7000 series. But after all the delays from Nvidia/AMD, I decided to bite the bullet.

Cool. How are the load-up and exiting wait times with that SSD? Loading game is not too bad, seem reasonable, but exiting the game sometimes feels like I clicked on "defrag drive" if you know what I mean. I know an SSD won't make the game play any faster.
 
Im able to play BF3 maxed on my 42" LCD at 1920x1080 and runs very fast with no lags, when I don't feel like I want to play on the living room, I use my personal LCD which is a 19" incher with 1280x1024 and the BF3 FPS are well above 80fps in average, nothing is overkill today loll

Running the OS and some other apps on the SSD.

All of my games are running from a regular HDD (1TB WD Black) Loading isn't that big of an issue.
