Is panel quality dropping overal ?

IPS/PLS panels are significantly better, especially compared to the very grainy, wide gamut CCFL back-lit IPS with low contrast. Plus IPS panels are more consistent in terms of measured preset colour accuracy compared to the popular CCFL back lit panels and first 2 years of LED back-lit e-IPS panels.

VA panels are significantly better and cheaper.

It took 2 years for the 144hz matte TN's (AOC G2460PG, Asus PG278Q, BenQ XL2420G after adjustment and LG 24GM77) to catch up to the 120hz Asus VG236H and Samsung Series 7 & 9 monitors preset colour accuracy wise, but they still don't look as vibrant since they are matte.

Compared to my Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP-HC is the Benq BL2710PT much better? The Dell have a S-PVA panel i believe.

Wrong thread and I'm pretty sure you have asked this numerous times already along with a few other questions. You have access to stores with hassle free return policies; buying a monitor is not a big deal, so try one out already.

The argumentation is extremely far-fetched and all the talk about blue light hazard, also in other contexts, and the LBL feature in particular, is just a commercial gimmick.

So all LBL does is to apply another adjustment to the RGB gains on top of the user settings.
their "low blue light" modes does nothing other than change the white balance, and can be replicated in any monitor with rgb balance settings. or you can just change the video card's lut either manually or with stuff like flux. it's no better or worse that way than with benq's named low blue light mode.

Are BenQ's low-blue-light options are just a gimmick? Good question.

I see one web page Iiyama also touting reduced blue light but offering no specifics.

If the manufacturers see a buck in competing to push low-blue-light, it will be like glasnost. We might finally get enough information to sort it out, and they might be incentivized to come up with something better than W-LED.

Reference should be to GB-R LED backlight monitors, described by NEC as "cutting edge."

Their W-LED sRGB 1920x1200 P242W model lists for $749. Their GB-R LED wide gamut 1920x1200 PA242W lists for $1,049. That's the price differential I mentioned.

They do cost more, but I remembered there were various problems solely due the the GB-R LED.

Not sure if GB-R is mature enough now?

Well i was just asking if there's been a big step from my Dell to the BenQ one since both was using a similar technology. I was not asking for recommendations.
 
I think panel quality is actually going up, but a display is so much more than the panel. You have back-light and electronics to think about, and of course assembly, all those has been going to shit in my opinion.
Been through 7+ displays during 2014, from cheap Dells at $200 to Nec Spectraviews, all crap (uneven back-light, or worse, uneven temperature). On some you could even see "shadows" running through the middle of the screen, they were that uneven.

In essence, people want it cheap (and 99% of consumers don't care or don't know what to expect), some of the most costly aspect of any product is quality control, so that's what companies kill off first. For the other 1% (people who like to hang around in HW forums) this truly sucks.

I own the pa241w and checked out the pa272w in person out of curiosity awhile ago. Not sure if there is a blue bias as it was in a bright area, but the blacks are definitely better on the 272, the glow is real on the older models (i stare at it everyday, still a good monitor otherwise.

IIRC the price difference between the p and the pa models are due to the 8bit and 10bit panel difference, and it is a huge difference just looking at it.
 
As I understand it, the panels come out of the factory with the backlight array attached, so when I think of 'panel' quality, the backlight is an integral factor, just like a polarizer.

If you're talking exclusively about the LED matrix, then yes, they have been getting better (although at a glacial pace, and they will never be able to improve in any dramatic way due to the nature of the tech).
I'm not a manufacturer, but considering how the same panels has been used in multiple monitors throughout the ages (Dell, Apple and Eizo using the same panels) with massive differences there has to be some variations (except quality).

Then you have the stuff like Eizo and Nec uses for brightness uniformity, but that probably goes under "electronics" as I mentioned earlier.

So, no, they have not been getting worse.
 
I'd say LCD's peaked in 2011.

There's been no improvement in the areas that matter. Colour fidelity, contrast ratio and maximum response time.
Backlight bleed in all the 27" and 32" panels seems worse than ever.
 
Thanks for the info. NEC's PA242W page describes GB-R LED as "cutting edge."
