this is my first overclocking attempt in over a decade, although im not a complete newb im still pretty rusty on some of the finer details. here's my setup q6600 cooled by swiftech mrc320 and apogee drive, gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P, diamond 4870, and ocz pc-8500 all in an antec 900. after playing with the bios i got my system to boot windows and run prime95(for about 20mins now) at 3.5ghz with a vcore of 1.525(stock voltage was 1.325v) and the highest load temps i see are 54, 53, 40, 43(under load). im a little worried that the voltage is high but my temps seems to be on the low side. also how come cpu-z shows my core voltage only at 1.44v?

what do you guys think, am i safe with these voltage/temps?

Max recommended vCore is 1.5V. Max recommended temp is ~65C

The 1.44V is either due to vDrop and vDroop.

Hey,

I saw a bundle for $883 from Canada computer is it worth it to get ?

ladis, wrong thread there guy.

neotekz, what is the voltage reading at idle? I'd say so long as you don't see the voltage go above 1.5 you should be ok. And with those temps even better so.

at idle it goes to 1.4-1.42v. is it common to have a difference of 0.1v? just seems a little high to me.

so can i up the volts as long as my temps are in check or does it get to a point where the voltage will damage my cpu regardless of temp?

Over 1.5v will start to damage the chip. Maybe not immediately. Might start to see your overclockability fade, or just kill the chip all together.

What are you getting that from? I know several people that run 1.6 water cooled on their q6600 for day to day usage.

i keep on hearing that a lot of ppl run their q6600 around 1.6v too, what are acceptable temps with that voltage?

What does that spec page say or prove? It says 0.85V-1.5V for the voltage but I doubt they were taking into account any sort of exotic cooling solutions which is what most people at higher voltages would be using.

i went ahead a up my voltage to 1.62 in the bios and cpuz is saying im running at 1.65v...but the strange thing is that when i set the voltage to 1.6v(bios) i get 1.57v. i just saw a setting in bios to help correct for vdroop so my voltage is staying pretty close to to what i set it in bios for any value under 1.6v but when i up it to 1.62v(next step higher) it jumps to 1.65v. what's going on here?

i got the system pretty stable at 3.9ghz @1.65v with temps just under 60C@load and 30C@idle

What, exactly, does keeping a CPU cool have to do with going beyond it's voltage limitations? Benchmarks, sure, but that is done in a controlled environment and not run on a dialy basis at those voltages. Water cooling a quad is hardly exotic when some air coolers do almost as good a job. I doubt any of you are running phase, LN2 or DI on a dialy basis.

Simply put, if you plan to overvolt beyond spec on a 24/7 basis you're greatly reducing the MTBF of the chip. Don't expect it to last very long.

There are people on this forum who've seen their OC disappear from running out of spec.
