in what regards>? someone with a p3 would envy you
someone with a A64 FX-53 would run circles around you.

your system looks good to me, post some pics so we can see

hell i dont know. i just spent $1200 a month ago and i feel insecure about my system. i feel like i may have made a mistake in my purchase

My system is similar to yours in many aspects

2.4@3.2 on P4P800 Dlx
512MB ram
200GB SATA
DVD
DVD/RW DL
6800GT

I've had it for almost a year now and don't feel "obsolesence" at all. Yes there are faster systems, but they are marginally faster, not door blowing off faster. You'll be fine for a bit longer, unless you require bragging rights.

No way. Most of the people you see upgrading right now are
  1. hardcore amd fans
  2. jumping on the 64bit bandwagon
  3. desperately in need of a new system (me with the p3 rig)
  4. any combination of the above

IMO, your system will still kickass for at least another year or so. Don't worry about it... hindsight is always 20/20.

Yeah..

I have got
P3, 733
GeForce2 GTS 64M
WD 1200JB
1G SDRAM 133 Crucial
Sony Combo CD-RW/DVD 300E
Plextor DVD-RW 712A (Cannot use it faster than x4, my IDE channels are too weak)
Soundblaster Live 5! Platinum.
PSU Q-TEC 550W(285W true power).

So, I do envy you :)

DFI Lan Party NFII Ultra B
AMD Barton XP-M 2500+ ~> 2.4ghz w/ SLK 947 @ 38/45c
2 X 512 Corsair XMS CL2 2-3-2-11
Chaintec AV710 7.1
WD740GB SATA Raptor
Seagate 160 gig SATA
ATI 9800 XT

I dont think my rig is outta date but i thrive for newer stuff and the only thing that holds me back is a low paying IT job that won't higher me full time even after 5 friggin years

My system is similar and I consider it up to date for at least another year or so.
My general rule after building 6 computers in 15 years is to wait until performance
is at least 2x the system I have. Of course that incremental upgrade of a new
vid card or larger HD is not the same..but healps in the meantime..my 2 cents

My system is outdated. Most old P4 systems are (between 1.0 and 2.0 ghz, approx.). Your system is fine. As long as it does what you want, it will be fine, but it certainly isn't outdated.

BTW YET!

2 weeks ago I would've envied you :D . Now though, I have an AMD64 3000+ running at 2.3Ghz w/768mb Kingston PC2100(upgrading to Patriot 512mb of PC3200 this week). I upgraded from an Athlon T-bird 1Ghz and it's definitely a huge jump. But I'd say you're sitting pretty good right now though.

im currently USING (that's right, attempting to play games such as cs and war3)...

700mhz amd-k7
128 mb SDRAM
s3 savage 4(can't run most games in opengl... barely runs some at all)
SB 128

... thankfully im jumping on the a64 bandwagon in the winter ;)

I envy you :p I'm stuck on this old pos PII 400 compaq deskpro that has a hard time running firefox 1.0pr  but I also remember a few years back when I would have loved to have ANY computer at all, so it's all good

Heh, like a new car, you're obsolete the moment it leaves the store ;). The question is, does it do everything you want it to do?

I used to have one of those cards, runs hot doesn't it? :) Mine ran so hot it burned up

I think your system is fine unless your a power gamer that HAS to have the top gear...My rig is teh shiznit for me right now...havent see much that slows it down and ill have the A64guys know i can eat a stock 939 clawhammer :)

EDIT: Soon ill be going after some of the OC'd 939's :p just hope they dont crush me for trying

Your rig is 'outdated' the minute you buy it, since there's always something bigger and better out or coming out.

Hey, at least you're not using a P1 133 like I am. That's right, Pentium One. And speed measured in 100 MHz.

There is nothing really wrong with your system. The system in my sig is pretty damn good. Sure there are some things that would run faster on an A64 or higher end P4 system but I'm not going to worry about it. About the only thing in my system that really needs an upgrade is the vid card but it does what I need it to do for now so I'm not going to complain much.

Them there 2400+'s are HARD hitting chips! I used to own a 2.8ghz one..i miss it :(

You have to be on some horribly neglected machine at work ;)

Actually, that's my home comp... A PI 133/24 MB EDO/integrated vid/audio. It used to be a monster back in the day (when I was 13 and it cost $2000). At work we have DEC Alphas and P4 2.8s.

It's an awesome system, don't worry. I have a similar one...

A64 2800+ @ 2.3GHz
1024mb of RAM
nF3 board
5900XT

I think the 5900XT is getting a little slow (the 9800Pro is a much better card) but it's still fine.

lol i feel mine is old a little bit, but its still the envy of some but not many , i just learned the vast world of the commnity of computers this past year , before i used to buy my parts at walmart lol

ive only bought 3 video cards in my life time and ive been a pc geek since 97 , the first one i bought was a voodoo 16 meg i dont even remeber if it really made a diffenrce but i had a compaq p3 500 with onboard grapics so i say it did i just didnt know what do look for lol ,

then i bought a mx420 from walmart for a 100 bucks lol it made some differnce then my trident 16

then last december thanks to my pal meh! he convinced me to go with a 9800pro! and it showed me how killer a vid card was it was 300 bucks at the time from newegg, if you guys remember 9800pro was the bomb then xts hadnt gotten too popular then.

o i remember gettting it from the fedex man it was supposed to a xmas gift but my dad let me have it early lol i remember opening it, it was huge , looked so badass with the big red board , hell it was the first vid card i ever had that had a active fan on it lol and when i installed it and played nfsu it was godlly!

hahaha just wanted to tell that little story on upgrading . one of my fondest memorys

now i find myself thinking of selling my 9800 for a 6800gt

but your system is good for now unless its suckin at doom 3! im not really a fan of your vid card but its still a nice one like my 9800pro not top of the line now but still good for games!

Your system is pretty good compared to current systems. Maybe your videocard could use an upgrade....I would replace that first..

I bought my system 4 months ago and now I think its getting outdated lol...I should have gone for 64 ...o well

And it is outdated once you build the computer also. I pretty well sucks that when you upgrade a machine to the 800fsb, and then find out that what you built several months ago is out of date.

I might be quite a few around here that still runs with a p3, yes it is outdated, but how many of us have the cash to buy or build a newer system. I will also post my specs of machines I have built or have on the way.

Computer #1: 2.4ghz 800fsb P4 with Ht enabled, 256mb ddr2100, 60gb western digital HD, soyo dragon2 mb, geforce4 ti200, 16x dvd drive, cdr burner. Computer not overclocked.

Computer #2: Amd 1700+ xp processor, 512mb ddr2100, gigabyte workstation mb (don't know what type off the top of my head), 20gb western digital hd, 10gb maxtor hd, elsa gloria 2 workstation agp pro video card, 56x cd drive, 250mb zip drive.

Computers down on is where I gave up spending tons of money on computer parts.

Computer #3: 1.8ghz p4 400fsb, 726mb ddr2100, 40gb western digital, 20gb maxtor, 80gb ibm deskstar, 80gb samsung, 100gb maxtor, 16x dvd drive, dvd burner, 52x24x52 cdr burner, geforce2 video card, Iwill workstation mb.

Computer #4: 2x 866mhz p3 133fsb, 512mb pc133, 20gb maxtor, belkin 802.11b wireless card, ati pro agp video card, ata 100 addon controller, 52x cd drive, alton dual processor mb.

Computer#5: 2x 500mhz p3 100fsb xeons, 256 ecc registered pc133, 20gb maxtor, 2x 5gb hds, samsung cd drive and samsung 52x24x52 cd burner, gateway dual xeon mb in a inwin server case.

Computer#6: (under construction) Intel srka4 quad p3 xeon mb, elsa gloria xl full length video card, 64bit pci gigabit network adapter, 6gb maxtor hd, 3.2 gb western digital hd.

If the computers down from 3 are out of date, I am not going to replace them anytime soon, computers 1-5 run and thats all I care about. Notice I went downhill in building computers.
Now I ask the question also, is my computers out of date?

In terms of new technology trends, yes, they would be out of date, but out of date is very subjective.

Does it do everything you want it to? If so, then is there any real reason to build/buy new or blow cash on upgrades? Probably not, and in the user's mind, it is not outdated.

Is it still pretty good, but kind of underperforming? If so, then some of it is relatively outdated, and you have to see whether or not to upgrade or build or whatever.

Well thankyou for the comment, the computers do what I want them to do, either they do folding@home, gaming, graphic arts, word docs, or just to tinker with to learn smp, they all do their job somewhat well.

I am in the area with alot of people, I built them with being on a small budget and all the parts were bought at the best bang for the buck. This is why ebay has become my friend over the years, I can get my parts cheap or I get pc junk from my friends.

As the dual and quad xeons, I will only max out the memory and on the quad xeon get the highest processor which will be 4 processors at 900mhz at 2mb cache. Also on the terms of memory, I can max it out to 16gb of pc133 memory.

And knowing these machines are out of date to some people, I don't know too many computers that take up to 16gb of memory, except the servers. So my computers sit in the catagory of between out of date and used.

sorry guys, i need to ask a question that might sound dumb to you. so those AMDs
that run at 2ghz are equivilent to p4's at 3ghz? or is it only the AMD64's? also, how is it possible that a lower clocked cpu run as fast or faster than higher clocked p4's? sorry if this is a stupid question.

I might as well give you an answer...
Athlons, as well as the AMD64s are able to run at 2ghz and be an equivalent to a 3ghz P4. This is to do with the measure of performance - AMD a little while ago decided to brand its processors differently than the Pentiums to accept that there is more to performance than megahertz (or gigahertz). They did this through increasing the pipeline - the Pentiums use a short pipeline, meaning high clock speeds but less commands and data processed per operation, but the Athlon and AMD64 use a longer pipeline, meaning lower clock speeds but more data crunched per operation. The benefits are obvious - less clock speeds means less heat, as well as the general census that "the AMDs are better cause they beat a P4 at a slower clock speed!".

Pretty much a general overall good description of how Athlon 64s and the Athlon line have kept up or outperformed Pentium 4 chips, but the Pentium 4s have the long pipeline, while the Athlons have the shorter one.

Pentium 4 Willamettes and Northwoods had 21-stage pipelines, and the Prescotts have 31-stage pipelines.

The Athlon XPs had 10 stage, and I think the Athlon 64 has an 11 stage pipeline.

i feel outdated. my system is OKAY . I mean it does most of the stuff i want. But it does it REALLY slowly. haha. DOOM 3 on this machine is impossible :b haha. oh well, i'll upgrade soon.

seriously, if that is your main computer... i can give you a 200mmx system for free.. i have about 5 of them collecting dust... but of course the shipping costs are prohibitive...

I'm prob worse off then you are, computer in specs, but then again, I love my computer. It does everything I want it to do. May not be as stream line as other computers, but it gets the job done. Yes, your computer is old, but like others said, it was old the moment you bought it. Again, as others said, as long as it does what YOU want it to do, its fine. Mine can be blown away by a majority of the people here, but its fine for me. I love my computer:)
