HI,

I got a 400 Watt psu, LC-8400BTX , currently installed.

Model: LC-8400BTX (Max 400W)
+3.3V: 20A (max 130W)
+5V: 14A (max 130W
+12V1: 14A (max 168W)
+12V2: 13A (max 156W)
-12V: 0.3A (max 3.6W)
+5VSB: 2.5A (max 12.5W)


computer has now the following:

dq965gf mobo
1 320gb sata hd
1 dvd burner
4 ddr2 ram sticks
quad core processor
1 120mm case fan

i am going to add an evga 8600 512 mb video card to it,
i need to know if i need to upgrade the PSU? or if this is sufficient psu power.

my other spare psu is ultra ult-500p, i can use this one but i am now confused because of dual rail stuff which i was reading up on, (and this psu does not have dual rail). http://www.ultraproducts.com/product...&productID=369

Also, plz lemme know what isthe worst that could happen, if the PSU is not sufficiently powerful enough. would it burn out all of the electronics?

All I know is that a couple of PSUs with a model string starting with LC have killed a number of HDDs, GPUs and who knows what else in my direct environment. Checking these PSUs with a DMM under load shows that their output voltages are all over the place. You seriously don't want to get these PSUs near your system if you value the components inside it.
 
LC/Deer/Allied are some of the biggest pieces of shit around. You'd be lucky if it could do 300w, nevermind 400w....And efficiency is certainly the pits (compared to 'real' PSUs that is).

I wouldn't worry so much about the efficiency of these units as I would about the poor voltage regulation. While LC/Deer PSUs love to blow up at times as well, they usually first take out most of the components in the system with unstable, dirty DC power.
 
Decent psu's dont cost that much for a mid low end model, just spend the cash.
 
Skimping on the psu is not a good idea, just like if you had bought a nice new car would you really mix piss with the petrol?
