Is my HP2475 ok?

Does anyone see the brightness and contrast of the monitor decrease as they look at the screen from the top at an angle. For example, if one gets up from the chair while looking at the monitor, do they see a change in brightness? I would really appreciate if someone can confirm this.

I am very happy with the monitor except this issue. The colors are more vibrant than my old Dell 2005FPW which has a LG S-IPS panel but the Dell doesnt exhibit this decrease in contrast/brightness as I get up from my chair. Both displays are kept on the same table, side by side, at my eye level.

To test this further, I actually did a simple experiment with my DSLR. I did manual exposure when I looked at the monitor at an angle of 0. At an angle my SLR complained of an underexposure of -1.5ev. For the Dell, the underexposure was -0.5ev.

Yes, it's normal. Unless you intend to view it from above I don't see the problem.

Thanks.

Then hows this different from TN monitors? I see the contrast shift on those (the HP is a little better). I was perfectly happy with my Dell and wanted this HP for the higher resolution. Now it seems my old Dell is super :)

The difference is with a TN, the shift is apparent even when viewed head on. What you are seeing with the HP is different, it's not actually a shift but an effect known as IPS glow or haze. It more of a surface issue than what TN suffers from, and should not be apparent from normal viewing position except on a black screen in the corners from less than say 28" away. A TN will always be darker at the top of the screen and gradiate to lighter color toward the bottom, from any angle.

Thanks! Wanted to resolve this before my 30 day return period :) But if you see the pictures I posted, the difference is quite apparent. I had expected my new HP H-IPS to be *much* better than the old Dell S-IPS so I was being so picky.

Physics dictates that any LCD screen will have colour-shift. As for TN reigning supreme, unless it gets 8-bit, it will never be as good as *VA or IPS, since TN panels (as you well know) dither.

Just like we will never have a monarchy system, but one very British inspired. :D

Not this crap again, can you refrain from posting your off topic tirades?

It's not the same as gamma shift, the image is uniform top to bottom when viewed head on. It's the same effect as the IPS glow that we are talking about.

Vick you have previously said the same thing. But I fail to understand why this glow is not seen on an older SIPS monitor but on a 2008 HIPS panel? I dont know enough about panels. I just compared the two monitors at home with my eyes and my DSLR camera lens. Also I checked out a Dell 2408 and the decrease in brightness from the top to bottom isnt as pronounced. The Dell has other issues with text etc (I like the HP better in general except for this 'glow' or decreased brightness)

I have a Dell 2005FPW as well, and while it does have the same glow/mirror appearance on blacks it is less obvious because it is violet/purple as opposed to the H-IPS white mirror glow you see.

If the darkening off-angle bothers you in regular use then I would return it and try another screen, but I also have seen this on my NEC 2690WUXI as well at pronounced off-angles, and this screen has the best viewing angles I've ever seen on an LCD, even in comparison to the 2005FPW.

But my question is, does the effect seem as pronounced to your eyes as it does to the camera? Cameras tend to amplify these effects in my experience.

wow.... so now ips monitors can be (ok if there's a viewing angle problem)and it be normal...
becasue that is what the manufacture wants us to believe by dumming us down over generations.

<<SNIPPED TO SAVE PRECIOUS BYTES>>

viewing angles on a ips could slowly become as good as a tn. then tn will reign supreme.

Never mind ;)

Hmm. If the 2690 has it, I shouldnt be complaining at less than half the price :) I have no other complaints. I guess I will keep it then ..... The problem is that I dont want to spend 1K on a NEC and I am just trying to get a higher resolution version of my 2005FPW :) Thats all ..... Have been very happy with the monitor for years!

I paid $599.99 Canadian for that screen in December of 2005 and I still consider it some of the best money I ever have spent on anything computer related.

The only feature it lacks is HDCP, which I need for PS3. Otherwise it is still awesome.

Like I said, if the viewing angle issue is not visible in normal use, just enjoy the HP monitor doing what you normally do.

Most IPS monitors have it, but what is different about them, is that outside of blacks, all the other colors shift "together" for lack of a better term. Meaning that the colors shift less in relation to each other. The contrast does not drop and the picture does not wash out until impossible viewing angles are reached, whereas VA and TN panels do to varying extents.

Its true that when I look at a TN monitor from the bottom or the sides the colors look severely washed out while for the HP, just the brightness/contrast goes down. I used manual exposure on my DSLR for the pictures to quantify the effects of both the monitors when I look from the top. A difference in 1ev is significant ....

I agree the dell is just super - my best investment in hardware! And I remember applying some coupon and buying it for 300 :) Now I just need to get a callibrator!
