Is my HDD dying again?

On friday my hard drive (Seagate 5400.2 120gb SATA 150 laptop drive) died, taking my data with it click-of-death style.

Now (through Newegg) I have a WD 120gb drive. But I'm sitting here and every minute or so I hear the drive go *click-clock* just once.

Normal? Or is my new drive soon to be "DOA"?

I can't predict your case, but many laptops use the power saving settings to spin down the drive and save energy.

My Toshibas' always had two different power saving modes. One for plugged into 110v and one for battery power.

You could check these settings and see if the clicks coincide with some HD power saving setting.

You could also run WD's HD checking tool.

This sounds like Intellipark (except for laptops) - I think WD calls it DuraStep. Anyway, if you can bench/put the hard drive under constant load _and_ then the sound stopds?

Then you know it's just what I mentioned. On the desktop it was enough for me to return it and never buy a GP/Econo drive from WD ever again. But for laptops, where it's actually necessary for shock protection and power saving, yeah it's nice.
