so my os does not boot up due a missing hal.dll file (2nd time), i forget which one. So i tried to reformat and it is stuck on the blue screen and at the bottom it says:

"Examining 238473 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on nvatabus..."

this leads me to believe that my harddrive with the OS installed on it is dying. Then a bsod pops up DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I google around and the problems are software and possible memory trouble? I doubt it's software because it's in the middle of a reformat.

Currently running memtest. Any advice?

If an older motherboard, first check the capacitors to make sure that one or more is not cracked/oozing.

How far does the new install get to before the BSOD?

Try the HDD in another PC. Does it show up in the bios? Try to install OS with the drive hooked up to another pc.

so far it's on pass 2 with 0 errors.

doesn't look like it's the memory

also i get stuck at the:

"Examining 238473 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on nvatabus..."

on the windows reformat, which is before getting up to which partitions to install it on etc. and that drive is the one that im suspecting of failing

i just tested my hd with wd's diagnostic cd and it doesn't have any errors. strange. does anyone know what i can do to reformat?

okay so i got to the partitioning step and it somehow says that the drive is corrupted and the formatting cannot continue

so what to believe, windows? or the wd diagnostic boot cd?

edit: sorry, it was seeing my flashdrive as a harddrive

so i guess i have it working but i'm wondering is there any reason that a missing hal.dll keeps coming up?
