Just been browsing my local etailer and i can score an i7-950 OEM for £116+shipping. Is it a worthwhile upgrade over my current AMD set up, I have some RAM but would need a new Mobo (Rampage 2 for £95 - again worth it?)?

The current rig is my daily driver and does not currently run 24/7
 
Holy Crap...do it. Big upgrade!

PS: Awesome price, they start around $280 in the US and go up.
 
don't upgrade to a i7-950. It is on a dead socket and is quite a bit out of date at this point.
 
For $200 thats a very good deal. its not the fastest thing anymore but they still make a damm nice rig.
 
It might cost quite a bit more for a 2500k or 2600k but if you don't have the money for a 1155 cpu now save up for an Ivy Bridge cpu early 2012. You will save anywhere from $80-$200 a year depending on your electricity costs and get over twice the points per day folding.

he's right on the electric. whats a 2500k and a 2600k getting in wondows bigadv these day"s. i know its nowhere close to double the points.
 
Well I own one run @ 4.2, but it will go to 4.5 on air. I didn't even bat an eye when sandy came out this thing is still better for multi GPU's which I usually use, and unless it is 2X the power I don't recommend anyone do an upgrade. You WILL notice quite a big difference, not to mention you can run up to 24GB of RAM if you want to.
 
A 2600K is.a much better choice, any difference in chip price will be made up for with the cheaper mobos and monthly power savings

It's not worth it at all, it's a slight upgrade, not a massive upgrade

Also as others have said, it's on a dead socket. If I were you I'd spend the money on an SSD or the new 7000 series GPU's when they come out, or hold off, who knows piledriver might actually be good, to switch out all that hardware for minimal games seems like a waste of money. Are you really going to notice those 3 seconds in photoshop or the extra 3fps in games?
 
I am going to go with its not worth it as well, especially from a part-time folding perspective. Older architecture and a dead socket - not where I would go if I were you.
 
I didnt relize he already had a Phenom x6 1090T. ill have to change my tune now. keep what you have and save!

While that is true the last line is a bit of a gotcha. Right now I have a few 100K+ machines folding. One of the rigs not in my sig but in my house is a i7 920 that is my wife's machine. I have cheapish power but getting rid of the heat that thing creates under load is actually a bit challenging.
 
Thanks for the input guys, have decided not to go for this but i have an upgrade itch that won't go away, howver i was contemplating something cheaper than the other options i could take...

No, if I was looking at a GPU upgrade it would be a 560ti, Besides I already have a couple of GPU's sitting idle but i was mainly thinking of an upgrade for my L5640 rig, or a companion to it. The original plan was a BD upgrade but since the performance is somewhat crap, i've been pondering other idea's. The final option was to upgrade the 1090T to some multi cpu goodness. Given that IB will be out soon, and interlagos should push down 1st gen G34 and C32, I might just tweak what I have and save some pennies

I just found something much better than a 2600k, and it should use the same power as mu 1090T:D
 
I suppose it would be possible that you used an US based agent to buy it for you and then ship it to you. Anyway glad to hear they are going to a good home.

For me unless I catch you now I am probably not be able to catch you anytime soon.

No, Doozer PM'd me and we got everything sorted within a few hours. Should be on its way across the pond in the next few days.

You may still have a chance. My existing rigs are not folding bigadv for reasons unknown and are barely breaking 110k on SMP. This new rig will be running windows and regular SMP as it will be my new daily driver and will only be folding part time. The 1090T will likely be sold at some point in the near future unless i can clear enough other stuf to be able to keep it but 5 boxen will be pushing it

After this i cannot get anything new toys for a while so we will have to see
 
If you wanted to maximize points on the new guy you would run a Linux VM on top of Windows. MIBW found he gained performance vs. running native windows only and that would allow you to run bigbeta if you wanted.

I think he is pretty happy with his VM on Windows set up. I think he said he got about 98% of native Linux performance out of it!

Are your dedicated boxes running the optimized Ubuntu set up? If not when are you going to convert them?

They both have Ubuntu on them, the kraken, BFS scheduler as per musky's guide - the only difference is I am running the v7 client as opposed to v6.34. Its a project to reinstall ubuntu and install v6 to see how i get on one rig - the other rig i will upgrade to the latest v7client and see if that helps.
 
Seems like you wouldn't have to re install ubuntu just to move to the v6 client.
 
there are no bigbeta for v7, and any windows client.

I am quite happy with the linuxforge image running within a virtualbox VM in Windows 7. I strongly recommend both the v6 client over the v7, and if you have to run windows, use a linux VM.

I'm running my sig rig, under windows I can get 40KPPD on bigadv, under linuxVM I can get 44KPPD on the same bigadv WU and if I get bigbeta I cans pull 73KPPD.

For the native machines, I'd just dump the v7 client, and install v6. Everything else should still work and don't bother with the hastle of reinstalling linux
 
I second going v6.34 it isn't as pretty but it works really well!

Right now you and I have a very similar amount of CPU available to us and the only reason I am catching you is because I am running v6. In theory my machines aren't even using the kraken or bfs scheduler so you should be faster than me.
 
Well "updating" to v6.34 did the trick, now have 6903's on both machines. the l5640's are getting a tpf of ~38 minutes for 112k PPD, only just got the x5670's going so we will have to see but i reckon about ~34mins a frame.

edit: only one frame in but the 5670's are showing a tpf of 29:05. that's a nice 165k PPD:D

I am guessing you are going to narrowly escape me then. I have to ship one server today so that will lower my total output. I might actually pass you for a day or so but we will see.

Probably more like 2-3 days, both are due to finish within 40 minutes of each other so one machine may well be idle for a few hours whilst all the uploads are done. 384kbps upload is a killer:eek:

Already installed, but a 6903 will take a good hour and a half to upload, whilst the1st machine will get a WU staright away, in my experience when uploading a WU nothing else can get through, even a download request for work.

That should not be correct. You can upload and download at the same time, which is exactly what langouste allows you to do. If you have a machine using langouste waiting for an hour and a half to get work, something is incorrect.

I have the same problem. How might I find out if langouste is installed properly? Sorry to thread jack.

I definitely need it with 512k upload (really 400k after line losses), but 6 Mbps(4.96Mbps acutal) helps on the download side.

Also, make sure it is running - top - u - <username> - you should see a process called langouste3

Make sure the proxy port in your FAH client config matches the port you use to start it

It sounds like you have a client config issue if it isn't trying to use langouste and uploading before it downloads a new unit. If you look at your logs, you should see something like this when a wu finishes:
