Is building still the best value?

Hi all,

I've been out of the PC building world for a while, last build was in 2009. I'm curious if it's still the best value.

Can you always build a better PC for the money than you could buy? Specifically at the $1,000 price point.

Thanks guys.

You will get a discount from major vendors that buy pre-configured computers in bulk and sell entire units to single customers. That comes at a cost to the customer in the form of pre-loaded software and lack of customization to fit the exact needs of that customer.

There's nothing quite like turning on your computer for the first time and seeing a blank desktop with one icon: the recycle bin. Desktop computers that come bundled with crappy monitors and peripherals that you eventually may replace can end up more costly in the long run. I usually buy a new system every 2 years. My first 3 PCs were pre-configured and always had compatibility issues and needed to be formatted every 6 months. My last 3 PCs were custom builds that have not once needed any anti-virus software, formatting, or even individual component issues...not one single time.

For $1000, I would say build.

Below $600, you can get better deals with pre-builts.

That might explain why you've had to buy them in 2 year intervals

Depends on the kind of PC you're talking about. If it's a gaming PC, then definitely. If it's an all-in-one, no.

build you own means that you have total control over what you want inside your computer. If you want a prebuilt one you wont get everything you want exactly and alot of preloaded crap.
