Is Ati slacking off a bit?

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't PS3.0 require DX9.0c to function properly? If so, since it is not present in DX9.0b how can a 6800 user take advantage of this feature?

Hey dh19440113!
Your hypothesis would be correct if it weren't for the fact that ATI's X800-XT doesn't get released til (launched) til May 31 and ships sometime in mid June giving NV close to two months of bragging. By then it could be possible that price fall alittle (~$50?) to help further sells. But if the 6800U's perfromance is any indicator I think we'll all need new CPU's before we see much improvement....now how would I go about getting a ~$700 CPU?

also you have to take into consideration the fact that it MIGHT be possible to unlock the extra 4 pipes in the x800 seeing as how the "unconfirmed sources" showed that it has everything the same as the x800-XT but just 12 pipes instead of 16.

if you can softmod the x800 to an x800XT and the x800XT DOES outperform the 6800U, Nvidia will be in another tight spot and will probably have to come up with a 6850U to help keep up with ATI

and then they(Nvidia) will have to get their PCI-E cards out when the slots start showing up on motherboards because ATI already has more info on their venture into PCI-E than Nvidia(from what I've read) and even have more widley known facts and birthdates for its R423

and according to the [H] review on the 6800U it is only NOW getting image quality equivilant of the 9800XT's, and if the x800 pro does have better image quality and able to be softmodded into the x800XT game over for Nvidia

these are just my thoughts, ATI isnt slacking one bit IMO, but I'm slightly partial to them since i havent used an Nvidia card yet so take what I say with a grain of salt:cool:

EDIT: i saw that chart and it seems the x800pro is also lacking some mhz in the core and ram, but from the past it seems that all the softmods have fixed that:)

Thats what I said in an earlier post, unless both companies use different PCB then ATI's cards will have the heads up when it comes to the softmodding..unless they use two molex connectors too. Albatrons press release seems to indicat that the 6800U can and will run at 600mhz though..

As for the IQ, I'm not sure you can really get any better then what ATI has been using, you can tweak it to look awesome like the FX done in movies like Phantom menace but then you run the risk of everything looking too fake....you know?

Now from what we know currently (I emphasize that strongly), this is how it's shaping up:
X800 XT -- $500
X800 Pro -- $400
X800 SE -- $300
X600 -- $200

6800U -- $500
6800NU -- $300

From that conclusion I must say that ATi isn't exactly slacking, they instead seem to have all the bases covered while simultaneously having probably the fastest card in the X800 XT coming out. How is that slacking?
just because they have only announced 2 models in the nv40 linup, doesn't mean that there aren't more, Nvidia's CEO said that they are going to be producing nv40 derivitaves for all market segments, something like 5 different cores at once.

Well that didn't answer the question. Sure game developers have access to DX9.0c, but what about the end users? My point is without DX9.0c, what good is PS3.0 at this point, for the end users.

This is like hyping something that might not be released for 6-9 months. By then everyone will be flaming about the next generation products by ATI and Nvidia.

DX9.0c will be out in public in plenty of time for the games releases. The big dogs will make it happen.

1. I thought ATi will be the first to roll out with the next gen card. They taped out first right?

2 Nvidia is having a field day, If i was ATi I would try to bust their chops. But all we get is silence, which suggest to me that Ati isn't very well prepared against Nv40's performance. I mean x800xt will be shipped in end of may, thats a month for Nvidia to gloat.

3. The x800pro will be priced at $399, compare to geforce 6800 at $299, (as suggest all over internet). These are equivalent cards with 12 pipeline. Nvidia has a huge price/performance advantage if the price are true. To make a mistake like that is foolish for ati. The mainstream market is the most important segment.

these three point does not bode well for ati. :(

I don't think ATI is slacking. I'm sure the new card from them will be a monster as well. One side may win the battle for a bit but the war is never going to be won by either side as long as both ATI and Nvidia stay in the game.
