i have been playing with an old beat up 5 buck keyboard for ages and i thought it was time to upgrade. i have always wanted to get a g15 but the price has always had me second guessing myself. so i just want to know if they are worth the 80 buck price tag. i play counter strike, tf2, the witcher, any rts game out and a few other games. i just wanted to knw if a g15 would work for me or if it is just a waste of money right now.
 
I have a g15 first gen. I went from a dell keyboard to that and I found the keys to feel much better. Added volume controller is good when you have headphones with no in line volume adjustment.
 
i was looking at a g15 keyboard a while back but couldn't justify the price. my standard microsoft keyboard works fine. i agree with the volume comment, that's a great feature to have. the bottom line is if you really want it and the price is worth it to you then treat yourself. but don't expect it to offer much more than a standard keyboard can.
 
I was going to get the G11, but the G15 has an LCD screen which I thought looked interesting. Does it actually have a practical use or is it just a gimmick to get people like me to spend more money for a pointless feature?

it has a functional use, but i would buy it cause it looks pretty.
 
The LCD is awesome if you use Ventrilo or Everest. The Macro keys are good if you play MMO or RTS. The lighted keys are nice and the switch to turn off the windows key is very useful. I love mine.
 
I have the first gen G15 and use the LCD for EVGA Precision and RivaTuner.
The first gen has blue keys and the LCD screen is adjustable on it's angle.

I have volume control on my cheap MS keyboard.
 
I would say that it's not worth it. I have one, and while I use the LCD screen I could easily live without it. There are WAY too many macro buttons, especially considering you have three different profiles for each one.

Go with the G11 before the G15, that's for sure.
 
I have a first gen G15, and I love it. There are so many things you can do with the LCD. Plus, I use all the macro keys for games like WoW or C&C3 or CoH. I usually compute in the dark, so the lighted keys are a plus and all the media keys are a MUST for me.
 
I have a second gen G15 and I have never used the macro keys but I do use the LCD. It is setup to show the display for rivatuner hardware monitoring. It shows GPU core tempature, GPU fan speed, all 4 core temps, all 4 core usage, ram usage, hdd temps, page file usage. I also use it to display winamp songs when I am playing a game if I want to listen to music.

That certainly makes it sound useful; I might just spring for it then.
 
Looks nice, works well -- but expensive. If you're going to use the LCD, it's worth it. I love it for random music, ventrilo, and the handful of games that support it. if you're not going to use the LCD, get the G15, or something cheaper.

it's a nice keyboard, and very easy to type on... I got mine for $50 at Circuit City a while back, and I don't think it was too much. I think it was originally around $100 when it came out, and it's definitely not worth $100 to me... I'm sure it is to someone, though
 
I have one. The LCD is okay, not extremely useful but overall the build quality feels very sturdy.
 
I love mine. Before purchasing, I did not think the LCD would be that valuable, but it's fantastic. I keep a customized Everest up most of the time.

I like mine quite a bit.

You can download differnt profiles for the LCD and I like pretty much everything about it.

I have always wanted a g15, but it looked so huge. and it was $100 back then.

How is the size of the 2nd gen? My main concern is length.
Would you say it is significantly longer then a traditional keyboard? or maybe ~2 inches?

$80 is not bad for one very well built keyboard.

EDIT:

upon research it looks like the 2nd gen one looks quite a bit shorter in length. which is a good thing for me.

The second gen G15 is worth it. Games that aren't supported by Xfire has the messages to show up on the LCD so I know when to alt+tab, and CoreTemp has G15 support for it. Everest Ultimate Edition lets you customize which sensors to add and where to move them. It's really featureworthy.

I own both versions and prefer the second gen due to the smaller footprint. I don't use G keys though so those that need a lot may want the first gen (though the second still has ~18 G keys). Some things I don't like on the second gen: no volume wheel, no rubberized surrounding black piece, and I prefer blue to orange.
 
I owned the blue first gen G15. The LCD screen was useless to me 95% of the time so I sold it and got a cheaper keyboard. In CS and TF2 if you take your eyes off the screen you're a dead man. My opinion is save your money and put it towards something else to make the games run better.
 
The G15 is worth it. The screen is very useful. In WoW, I use it to monitor incoming messages and to monitor my kills and killing blows in battlegrounds. It is surprisingly useful.
 
I just got one in the mail yesterday from NCIX Their price was $78.54 but I found it for $47.00 on a differnt site so NCIX price matched it.

Hmm. sound control I would of liked on the keyboard. But I have windows volume control on my usb Logitech headset. I guess I can use that, though the keyboard volume would be a lot more convenient. I am glad the foot print is smaller. and 18G keys is more then enough for me :)

I use the first gen g15, i hate hte new ones ;[. But I use alot of addons that help me monitor stuff while in game. Trillian plugin, vent plugin, riva tuner in case I need to adjust fan speeds, etc.
 
I love the color scheme and the looks of the new one a lot better, but the change to volume buttons instead of the wheel and the smaller LCD kinda kills it. Mainly the volume buttons.
 
I got a second gen for $60 from best buy (price matched it to NCIX lol) and I love it, the screen is awsome, the luminated keys are very helpful to me (I play in a dark room alot) and the feel of the keyboard is alot nicer than a cheap keyboard.

Second gen still has sound control. It is just in the form of two volume up and volume down buttons.
 
First gen for me, it would be a pain to use the LCD without the volume wheel for me. Oh and yes it is worth it. Seeing IMs and being able to change music without haven't to change what I'm doing is so nice.
 
I bought one way back on release day. The letters on the keys are all worn out, but I still keep it for the simple fact that I use the LCD for alot of things.

I used the macro buttons a lot in the different MMORPG's that I played. The live macro recording is nice and you can fine tune them if they didn't quite record the way you'd like (whether it be sequence or timing). I never used the LCD because I was using 2 monitors. Now, I'm back to only FPS games and never use the macros.

Outside of gaming, the macros can be useful for launching programs. The keyboard is huge though. Between the G-15 and a ratpadz, you'd better have a big keyboard tray.
 
I love my G15. I have the macro keys set up to be used for basic windows functions and it's really convenient. I also love the LCD display for showing my GPU and CPU temps. And the backlight is of course sick. It may not be worth the high price tag in some cases, but I'm happy I went with it.
 
I have a 1st gen Blue G15 and I love it. I game alot in the dark at night so the backlit keys are great and I love the LCD for media information. I use the LCD for FRAPS, Ventrilo and temps using programs like EVGA Precision. I was a little skeptical when I I first got it because I heard people complain about the paint coming off but I have had mine for over a year and no keys are faded.

I actually went to Fry's and tried one out. Felt very very good.
They had it set up to fully water cooled system with dual gtx 260's running crysis warhead.

I found the keys were alot easier to press then the Saitek Eclipse keyboards.
They make very little noise when pressed. Over all very comfortable.
The LCD display and orange back-light are really sick.
So far I'm impressed.
 
I've come really close to buying one so many times, but I just can't see, aside from the gee-whiz factor, that it could possibly be worth the price of admission.
 
They run at around $50 (typically with $20 MIR). That is not overly expensive, but you do have to look around a bit for the deals.

I have had mine about a month, play mostly FPS, so haven't really used the G keys yet. LCD is very handy, even for simple things such as keeping track of the time. The key presses are taking me a while to get used to (kinda soft), but no real issues. I would recommend it.

Looks sweet too.
 
Mark, they are fantastically well built keyboards, the [H] bunker needs atleast a few for realtime temperature monitoring and stuff ;)

The LCD's main uses on mine are music control, Video game monitoring (BF2142, BF2, WoW when I actually played it) and system monitoring (RivaTuner's built in App, Everest, And SirReal's control panel (Network monitoring + CPU/Mem usage)

They can be easily found for cheap. If you are on the fence, because you think you might not use the LCD, you'll at the very least appreciate 6 key roll over and very tactile feedback.

Oh, the G15 v2's upgrades are USB2.0 ports, 1/3rd of the macro buttons (For those who complained about too many, you still can make 18 per game. ) and red lighting rather than the Mildly-Dim blue they had before. (I'm rocking a v1 incase anyone is wondering ;) )

Met-Al, You do know logitech is aware of the key wearing problem? It's not you, it's they keyboard. Call em up and they'll replace it, and knowing Logitech, let you keep your old one.
 
I love mine also. I do think its worth it. Almost all new games get a setup for the LCD and I didnt know how much I was missing not have an illuminated keyboard.
