are there any pictures showing what the big iq difference is? i have no clue what shimmering is

Look at the grass infront of the gnome. That is shimmering.

It only happens in games with a lot of terrain showing at once (like WOW), and ive never noticed it in F.E.A.R.

If you play a lot of flight sims or RPG's its enough to bother you

I reviewed the video and don't know what you are talking about. I didn't see any "shimmering." Must be that my eyes are defective.

If you dont notice it dont worry about it. Be happy you dont, you will if its pointed out.

It was pointed out, you provided a video. I reviewed the video and still don't see any "shimmering." The grass seems to be consistly painted during movement.

In addition. I have played about 30-40 days worth of WoW and never seen any shimmering.

Guess that makes my eyes "better" :)

Guess so. I frankly have no idea how you dont see the sparklies though.

I personally don't think I can see it however I see something flickering (textures?) on the stone path ahead of the gnome...

I noticed it pretty easily...glad my 6600 doesn't have that problem in any of the games I play.

Yes, I play with a BFG 6800 OC and 3500+ AMD and have never seen the shimmering you mention. Your video looks pretty similar to what I see for 4-6 hours a day.

It's interesting how the human machine works.

ATI Fan Boys will tell you they have the Highest IQ..

nVidia Fan Boys will tell you that buying an ATI will lower your IQ...

Its a vicious circle..

and they can keep arguing, i'll just enjoy playing the games :D

I will be enjoying the games i play while all you fanbots nit pick at IQ diffences...

:D LOL

If you read enough reviews and forum posts you will find image quality problems with both companies. It's usually limited to either a game or two or a particular driver release.

I have not read any reviews complaining about image quality yet for either release from ATI or NVIDIA. If anyone is really worried about it, buy the card from a place with a good return policy and see for yourself.

well i'm not complaining :p i'm just curious because a lot of people seem to get really worked up on these image quality things so i'm just seeing what the big fuss is :p

I would play the game, and I do, it's just that I notice the shimmering/moire and it is damn annoying.

moire has been with us forever though, that's just the nature of things right now

maybe along with anisotropic and antialiasing we also need antishaderaliasing, antishimmering and antimoire'ing

it would be nice if they could overcome the isotropic aliasing

Ever since I have used this 6600GT I have noticed Moire and Shimmering more than ever... Maybe I have better attention to detail than before?

Does the GTX produce Moire too?

I think it's because we are only noticing these things now because in the past we didn't have things like high levels of AF and AA or high resolutions, or lots of use of shaders (which introduce shader aliasing all over the place), these things are new and IQ in games is coming to a point where we notice more, we are more aware of IQ than ever before.

I personally noticed the moire and shimmering myself and researched it... I hope something from ATi or nVidia comes out to help this situation soon.

Agreed, and some people just have more acute senses for things like texture shimmering, noise, etc.. then others do.

This is the Moire effect - http://www.mathematik.com/Moire/

It's not a problem with video cards, it's the nature of displays, how games are made, and our eyes.

http://eluzions.com/Illusions/Moire/

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/MoirePattern.html

all kinds of resources out there on it, google it
Thanks for the links. I know what the Moire effect is.

So I thought maybe the Geforce series produces "more" Moire.

People with Radeon cards also get Moire and even Shimmering... just seems more people with the nVidia cards complain about it, or notice it.

Yeah that's true!
I have a X800Pro and the Moire effect is present, so is shimmering. But I can live with it pretty well.

Well good for you :)
But it annoys the hell out of me... :(

i'm equally annoyed by aliasing, especially shader aliasing which is starting to become a real problem in games now that they are using shaders heavily

I have actually ALT+F4 out of CS: Source a few times because of it...

I guess we need SHAA (SHader Anti-Aliasing)

Oooh, sexy, I'm a [H]ardGawd!

I hope it doesn't get worse when I get my GTX.
I want a new card right NOW but I don't know what to take.
The XL seems to be loud but the IQ is apparently better.
The GTX is almost silent ( :D ) and has worse IQ.
Great. Great. Great.

Well there is no real reason besides IQ to get an X1800XL.. because it costs more... and it's slower...
Personally I'd rather get an X1800XL.. but that's just me.. 6600GT is my first nVidia based card and I don't like it, that's after having a Rage 128, Radeon 9000, and a Radeon 9600 Pro..

It all comes down to your choice.

Thanks for the link...I finally saw shimmering for the first time. Now, it begs the question, what's the big deal? I just thought that's how games worked :). It's a video game for crying out loud. It's not real life (or is it...).

That's what I was thinking too but I need a quiet video card and the XL is not quiet (heard it from two people now). And all reviews say no XL or XT is as quiet as a GTX.
So I'll get myself a GTX...

Well it shouldn't be unbreably loud...If you're playing a game, you should have some sound (Or Headphones) turned up a bit no?
