Apple’s shares are taking a beating thanks to a weak outlook for the current quarter coupled with disappointing iPod sales.

Apple's stock fell 10.65% to 139.07 in heavy trading, a four-month closing low. The stock is down 30% this year. Analysts question whether Apple can offset slowing iPod sales with rising sales of other products and services.

Looks like people are finally coming to their senses and buying REAL computers and MP3 players.

Looks like people are coming to their senses about Apple period. HUGE correction there. They post better than expected and the stock plummets. Looks like lack of confidence to me.

seriously, go to *any* university in the country and you will see that Apple is on the rise, despite what Wall Street might say. Seriously, in any given classroom I find 50% or more of the students using MacBooks.... at least here in New York. Young people *love* Apple's laptops and these are the people that will be leading the way in businesses in the future.

Apple has a huge amount of momentum in their favor right now, and there is lots more software being written for their platform... don't be so quick to write off Apple.....

Besides.... even if you don't agree with me, *everyone* here will agree that Apple is one giant hype machine. People love them, the general public buys "ipods" not "mp3 players". The *smart* [H]ers will look at the current Apple price drop with great anticipation.... .it seriously will represent a great stock buying opportunity when the market picks back up.... just let them get pounded, that can only be a good thing for quick thinking investors

Just about every student, including me, has an iPod nowadays. There are no more people left to buy them since everyone already has one.

buy a zune then...

if they could make the software suck less they would definitely have the upper hand, especially in quality of build

I don't :p

But then again I'm never around another source of music. In my car I have a Kenwood mp3 stereo, at home, I have my home entertainment system, computers, etc.. at work I have my computer and headphones..

What do I need with an mp3 player? :p

hehe I probably have the same kenwood player in my card, i still end up attaching my zune to the cd changer port on the back simply to cut down on the number of mp3 cds in my car, as well as to see the album art, cause its just kinda cool to have

My reply was for Vorazan who said just about everyone has an iPod. I should've quoted him. lol

This is my car's little baby :D

Sweet sounding radio. Haven't subscribed to satellite though.

And then they become part of the workforce and realize that the world run on PC hardware and Microsoft software. Macs are nice and all but they're consumer items, PCs on the other hand literally drives the world.

:D This man tells the truth :D

I can't remember ever seeing a macbook in any classroom at Penn State Behrend. You see a few people sitting outside of the cafe using them, but in all of my classes it's dell's and hp's, with a few toshibas. Maybe students in other majors use them, but I don't see any in the finance program.

Well you are in the finance program, your department knows the value of money :D.

Ok, sorry couldn't resist.

macbooks aren't that great. huge at university (university of alberta) but that's because apple gives schools mad discounts to sell the stuff 10 percent off for students. if we had dell here id be all over it. had a 17 inch macbook and sold it

i figured you weren't replying to me, i just got a chuckle out of the kenwood, since technically i don't really need an mp3 player either, though i will say, doubling up the eq between the car deck and the zune sounds really nice, esp since i only have good speakers and no sub.

Quite so in many business sectors, but not so in others. Many of the websites you come across, the TV shows you watch, the music you listen to and the magazines you read are created by industry pros who either favor the Mac platform or, in many cases, have had little experience with generic PCs or Windows at all. Like in any sector, you'll find a lot of PCs being used in entertainment and media production, but you'll also find a lot of Macs. Apple certainly doesn't make the Mac Pro for the white-collar guys pounding spreadsheets all day or for old ladies to be able to send e-mails -- a task which any bottom-of-the-barrel Dell rig can handle beautiful.

Now, on the subject of iPods, I think there are two things at play here. First, and most obvious, is the fact that iPod's adoption is massive, as has already been said. It's a market of a fairly fixed size, and you can't saturate the market without eventually seeing a sales declination. The other factor, I think, is that Stevie & Co. have been steadily making iPods less user-friendly, like the Touch's inability to work in disk mode. There really isn't any reason for Apple to be going backwards with iPod features, but that's essentially what they're doing with these weird tactics.

I dig my immaculate white 5.5G iPod, and I still dig my beaten up 1G nano, but I doubt my next PMP's going to be from Apple Inc. Surprising considering that I actually bought a book written specifically about the iPod, ain't it?

Damn, I better start looking for new friends.. one of them is a Mac-head.

hehe me 2 :p, I know too many people with ipods/ mac laptops, and luv apple... well i don't like apple... cause im a microsoft fanboy :D... yes i know i am weird.. :p

The day my 1G 4GB nano dies I'll start looking at what's available. Until then I'm going to keep using and enjoying it since it does everything I need it to do. Even use it in my car via a USASpec PA11-HON iPod Adapter.

Don't see why people bash ipod's. I've had two mp3 players before and they were not as good as the nano. As far as computers go, when my mac-head friends say macs rule I'm happy to correct them and to remind them that they don't know their ass from a hole in the ground :)

I heart my Zune 30GB.

iPood...

I will second this.

The software does suck though. It's usable, but very cumbersome. I tunes isn't all that much better, IMHO. If you took both pieces of software and blended their strong points together that would be killer.

I've used my 5G iPod for the last 2 years and it's still going strong. I'll buy a new one if it ever dies. Hopefully not. I've got my music organized on it with all the album art.

more likely every has a god damn ipod.

yes but they are designed to break every year.

maybe some people want something that will last a while, has hi fidelity playback with no hisss, is not over priced, etc etc.

personally i like cowon iaudio7 for sound quality and battery life. but i dont pay to watch movies and tv on a postage stamp. some people need to do that rather than watch them free on their big screen tv.

Glad to see some people here favoring Cowons; I've had my D2 for around 6 months and love it. I pretty much have to purposefully not charge it for its battery to die.

you shouldnt treat it so well :D
Ah...so you're saying I should run them over with my car once a year? :)

Damn these inferior iPods breaking every year (when I drive over them in my 3500 pound vehicle)!

Really doesn't surprise me that Ipod sales are going down.. yeah the "market is saturated", but not only that, there are better options out there.

If you take a look at huge advertising campaigns, you will see that Apple is/was definitely one of the huge advertisers.. especially for the Ipod. That is one of the main reasons the Ipod became so popular... the general public doesn't know how to do research on products and just buys whatever is advertised the most and what is "hip and groovy" at the moment.

The same goes for the huge Intel advertising campaings of the P4 days..... especially when AMD was by far the speed king. Most everybody bought Intel based systems because they didn't know anything about AMD. I have run across so many people that have no idea there is such a company as AMD. If AMD had advertised when they were the speed king, they most likely wouldn't be having near as much problems as they are now. Not advertising like they should have is one of the biggest if not the biggest misatake they continue to make. True they are getting a tiny bit better.. but not anywhere where they should be.
