Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but since there isnt one directly for portable devices here it goes.

Looking to replace my Gen IPOD 5th Gen (80GB) since it's finally in the process of biting the bullet after being dropped in the ocean twice, on a steel deck from nearly 100ft, and ran over by a car... The play button is a pain in the ass and the battery cant decide if it wants to hold a charge but other than that it's still fully functional...

I would like something of similar strengths but I never want to deal with itunes again (and currently dont now, although it's sometimes buggy without it.) It does not have to be as large in the storage dept.

I also would like bluetooth to stream to my motorcycle helmet.

A similar toughness would be nice as I just lost a blackberry to a lug nut (or a really big rock, still not sure yet) on the freeway but for the most part I keep that stuff in my tank bag now...

The only other ones I have had were a Zun (military edition) that i accidentally dropped on the deck at the gym and it shattered, and a sony thumbstick type that worked great for a while until moisture killed it (I dont do that job anymore.)

You can use Media Monkey to sync an iPod touch and never touch iTunes for anything but updates (and video syncs). MM blows iTunes away IMO, I've been using it for years with my 2nd Gen touch as well as my EVO and cheap 2GB MuVo player I use for running... Other than the touch, Samsung has a new line of Android based players similar to the touch, but in 4" and 5" sizes, the latter has a really beefy battery (2000mAh, larger than any phone out there, should last a lot with no cell radio in the device).
 
It sounds like what you need is a ruggedized portable media player. If that's your only criteria, then your question ("which device should I get?") might be the wrong one. There aren't too many players that are designed with ruggedized features already built in. I think what's more commonly done is to pick the player you'd like, and then get an accessory case/sleeve for it that would enable it to survive drops and spills.
