iPod nano screen scratching?

hmmm. Guess I'll stow mine away until I get some type of cover for it. Still well worth it, in my opinion. Replaced my 2gb iRiver and I have no regrets.

I just ordered the invisibleShield for my black nano (which I hasn't arrived yet).. I haven't seen any reviews about it yet, but it supposedly has a free replacement policy if the film gets messed up.

I have a Nano. I carry it in my front pocket of my jeans each day to work. There is some minor scratching on it, but nothing that really bothers me. I'll get a case for it as soon as something decent comes out on the market.

As far as a class action lawsuit, I think thats a pretty stupid and irresponsible idea. It seems to be the only thing we know how to do now-a-days -- sue sue sue. Somehow I don't see the screen getting scratches being Apples fault when the Nano ends up bouncing around in the front pocket of your jeans, or in your purse. Buy a case for it, or buy a PDA screen protector.

It would be a class action law suit for replacement not for money like most law suits now adays. if you can get the other color screens on the regular ipods not scratch then why cant u get these nanos i would be upset.

mine has some minor scratches, nothing too major tho i think its doing pretty good considering i havent been treating it the best i could.

i agree a class action suit would be too...american

A minor scratch is probably more glaring on a Nano than on a regular iPod.

As for the guy with the busted screen, I don't know what he did, but I doubt that's going to be a widespread issue in the mysterious vein.

You also have to keep in mind that the last lawsuit Apple settled, was simply because they didn't want to address an issue with their batteries without charging their customers another hundred dollars. I would hope Apple learned from that mistake.

I wonder why they don't include some kind of protective film like the pda screen protectors with the ipod? It couldn't be more that a few dollars.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/09/23/ipod_nano_scratching/

"Matt Baker, who bought his Nano at the Apple Store in Regent Street, said he went back and found that the assistant manager was "(a) fairly apologetic and (b) seemed to have been fielding the same comments all day, and getting rather fed up of them! He said there's no official company policy at the moment on the scratching, but that it is obviously an issue 'just from looking at mine', and that they'll swap it for me with no problems if I bring the whole thing back"."

and belkin have launched some new Nano cases here http://www.belkin.com/iPod/matrix/index.asp?player=nano&pid=232&dock=y

Yeah they are very easy to scratch. I work at Circuit City and I put one up for display, all I did was put songs on it, and there are already 2 noticeable scratches on the screen.

I question the validity of that webpage, flawedmusicplayer.com and I'm not sure what to think of the news.com article. Before I bought my ipod nano, I used my cousin's ipod, which was severely scratched up, so I anticipated scratches on mine. For people who are really concerned about scratches, they could get some scratch filler, not sure about the details of the stuff, just know we have some at home (I'm not at home so I don't know what it is called).

As far as flawedmusicplayer.com, I'm guessing that people who put the nano in their jeans pockets or whatever are most probably torquing them, as that is probably the reason for the damage. I've had my nano since the first week it came out, and I bring it to school everyday (including :(:(:( Sat & Sun). I keep it in loose pockets, free of other stuff, ( I guess that could be annoying to have to look after it that way) and I seem to have no problems at all with screen damage. So what I'm guessing is that people should be careful as to not bend the nano, which is easily bendable with fingers, even.

iskin would be perfect if it wasnt so damned grippy. (pulls your entire pocket lining out with it)

My fiancee purchased one of the nano armbands, and is pretty happy with that. It doesn't have a screen cover, but since it is up on her bicep, she really doesn't need worry much.

Those things rock. I have one on my iPod and it's awesome, I prefer them over a regular case by far. Their replacement policy is nice, too; just register the thing, and if it gets messed up, they'll ship you a new one and then, after you receive it, you ship yours in, so you never have to go without it.

I've used a nano with one of those on it, and I was pleased with it... the feel of the scroll wheel is slightly different, but fairly easy to get used to, and it definitely keeps the scratches off.

I've had a screen protector on my ipod photo and a protector on the back since the day I got it. It's funny, everywhere else has an abundance of scratches except the screen and the back(only the flat part of the back).

My wife wears her Nano with the arm bad, so we haven't noticed much scratching yet. However when I first looked at these at the local Apple store, about two days after they were released, I noticed that all of the display models had very scratched screens. At first I thought maybe someone had vandalized them, but I guess they just used really soft plastic.

I guess I won't be purchasing an iPod Nano afterall...at least not until they address this problem. ...and from the evidence I have seen, there IS a problem. Just becuase YOU haven't had any issues specifically doesn't mean those who have had problems are liars.

Was that a generic "You" or were you referring to me specifically?

If I were you, I wouldn't make this into a deal breaker. The Nano is still extremely cool and functional, and I continue to recommend them. Just keep in mind that the screens are more prone to scratching than you might think, and adjust your behavior accordingly. Like I said, my wife wears her's in the arm band, and so far she's run about 100 miles with it and no scratches (she is training for a marathon). Though I do remember seeing the screens of the demo models in the Apple store with horribly scratched screens. It didn't affect the function of the device, just the asthetics.

Thats good to know, I hope it comes soon. I think the nano comes tomorrow.

....a generic YOU...to noone in particular.

I think I will just hold off a bit to see what comes of this situation. No need spending $250 on a portible device that has to be held with kid gloves.

"Kid gloves" implies that you might break it. I don't get that sense from it at all. Yeah, it may have the propensity to scratch easily, but we haven't exactly been carrying it around like it's some delicate flower and ours is holding up just fine. I guess I'm just saying don't let one issue get too overblown. Go to an Apple store, or find someone who has one and check it out. You'll be very impressed.

Screw that....just put it in your pocket with nothing else.

If it's anything like my 60Gig Ipod, that even will scratch the hell out of it.

I think my regular 'pod is more scratched than any of those little buggers. Hell, give me a 10 minutes and i'll show you some scratching.

Hopefully, some of this stuff works. It says it works here.

Maybe try to fix the scratches before you want Apple blood? (Would that be Apple Juice?)

Isint "asthetics" one of the biggest things apple trys to sell?

Imagine car companys trying to sell cars with house paint on them.. People would be wondering why their paint is all dusty and scratched looking a month after they bought them. I too might want someone to fix the issue, especially since astehetics is part of the marketing of the device.

Well, as a Best Buy employee (*glares at the Circuit City forum member), we are expected to have the Nano Tubes in stock within the next month or so, about the same time Apple Stores will have them. However that invisibleSHIELD looks amazing! Can any of you users tell me how it feels or just a few pics ? Does anyone know if it covers the sides as well? I wanna get it ;P... the Nano tubes look okay, but they don't protect the screen!

The ironic thing about when I bought my black nano the day it came out is that after two days it was so horrifically scratched, and I put it in the microfiber, mind you, case that I used to use for my sunglasses. When I tried to return it they said they wouldn't take it at all (this is the Apple Store in Arden Fair in Sacramento, CA, the boss is an asshole, although she looks really nice), and this is one of the most stupidest ironic conversations I've had, especially coming from a retail standpoint:

<Boss>: "You should've taken better care of this thing, like buy a case for it."
<Me>: "Well I would've if you fucking CARRIED any, but you didn't at the time I bought it."
<Boss>: "Well there are other ways to protect it, like a SOCK."
<Me>: *confused WTF face* "... nvm"

But needless to say, I was able to get it fixed... although the way i went about getting it *replaced* wasn't exactly legal... ;P

EDIT: I found more pics / descriptions here: I think I'm going to get it ;P Again, does anyone know if it covers the sides as well?

Mind if I ask, why would anyone want something so small? Isnt the regular iPod small enough? Personally, I think its too small and light that if I left it in my pocket I would probably forget it and throw my pants in the wash machine. Either that or I wouldnt know if it even fell out of my pocket. Smaller just isnt always better.

me and my girlfriend both got the black ipod nano, mine is still being sent from apple.com, while she bought her's at the apple store. well her's in still in good condition, she babies it everywhere, but we ordered Two of the invisible shield protectors and will write about it when it comes.

I find it extremely amusing that anyone would suggest that a flash-based mp3 player isn't intended to to stuffed into a pocket - even an empty one. Jobs himself pulled it out of his jeans pocket when he first revealed it. I can understand the screen protectors, but isn't buying a case for the Nano just defeating the purpose of having it be slim at all?

 MindBoggled

Ipods have always been easily scratched, I once scratched mine by wiping it off with a napkin, absolutely ridiculous I have to say, but I should have bought one of them invisibleshields. If only they had thought of putting a better coating on the screen. Heck, I bet the one Jobs pulled out of his pocket was all scratched up, microfibers in clothing, especially wool or cotton can easily mar your Ipod's screen.

To all the invisible shield guys - make sure you follow their directions when applying it (http://www.theinvisibleshield.com/application.html)... the getting it wet part and all that. That stuff will stick like mad when it's not wet and can make applying it a serious pain. And make sure that you check it for bubbles while it's still wet, that way you can remove and reapply it easily. Getting it is on is definitely the trickiest part, but it holds up well afterwards.

Anything bigger would be too big for my wife. She is training for a marathon, running 20+ miles at a time. Any added bulk gets tossed real quick. At 1.5 oz. she doesn't even notice the Nano. So to answer your other question, no, the regular iPods are not small enough. In this case, smaller is most certainly better.

So are the invisibleShields any good?
