Engadget has an interesting news item on reports claiming that the iPod classic 1.0.2 update has a bug in it that causes the drive to constantly spin. Any of you have this problem?

A glitch that's a little more troubling than those freezing issues we heard about, since bumping a spinning platter is a sure way to kill your drive dead. Most users see the problem manifest as the battery draining much more quickly than it should.

A bug? I always thought it was a goal of Apple to have their products fail within a few years :)

I love unsubstantiated rumors. Engadget says it seems to affect a few people after the 1.0.2 update, but I haven't seen this happen yet and I play mine every day.

Oh Noes there's a bug! Its as bad as Vista! Quick, put it on the front page and post it as truth. You guys crack me up sometimes. If its Microsoft and its a bug(s) its accepted. If its a bug with Apple, its front page news.

Spoken like a true Apple fanboi.

Microsoft bugs are reported every minute. Have you looked in the Operating System forum? People are posting problems with Windows (and Linux) every 5 minutes. Quit being so defensive. Steve is just giving us a heads up that it has happened to someone and it might on yours too, so just be careful.

so are you suggesting this website should just keep silent whenever bugs are found in APPLE products, to give a false impression of "perfect apple" to make the little apple fanbois happy, just like Apple has been doing for years?

apple boys always crack me up:D

Well I guess according to you then, this topic belongs in the Apple forum not the front page? ;)

I think the point is Apple have released a crippling update.

The point is, there is a bug and its on the front page. The other guy was saying that its only on the front page for people to poke fun of apple, and the other guy countered with lots of bugs for MS/linux are posted (but in their respective forums, not front page). I was just pointing that out.

/unsubed.

I wonder if the fact the the IPod is so popular that this bug makes it newsworthy?

And besides, we see news posts about bugs in MS stuff all the time on the frontpage along with Apple and Linux and ATI and nVidia and the list goes on. It's a damn tech site for Pete's sake.

Vista does not kill hardware. And as much as M$ would like to brick all their old stuff, and make people move to vista... they won't.

Apple wants people to move to new iPods, so they are crapping the firmware. Crap like this happens to the iPod often.

Hrm... I wonder what M$ is doing with their Zune firmware...?:D

owned.

There is a slight difference between the forums and front page, don't you think? And, Apple fanboi? Me? Awesome! Time to sell all my PC's and buy a Mac... not!

I'm simply tired of reading Apple news followed by some wonderful comment about how Apple is creating (fill in coverful nouns and adjectives) on what a few people have seen.
Sorry, if I got so defensive, but I do love my iPod 160Gb. If that makes me a fanboi, then so be it.

You do realize this is reported on the new iPods, right? Why would they intentionally shoot themselves in the foot by, as you so eloquently put it, crap the firmware? Also, how do you substantiate that "crap happens to the iPod often"?

And lastly, owned? What, are you twelve?

I was given an 80gb as a gift and have not had a problem....Other than the initial one being a brick.
