I found the Rocketfish at BB to be the best all round case under $40.

I must say I noticed this too. First on my mini, now the new air. I traded in a 1st gen.

It's not wrong, it's just a different type of screen.
 
Went out and bought a smart cover. Way better than smart case so far, but less protection obviously.

I've always been a fan of just the smart cover and a zagg rear shield (PITA to install correctly) and throw it in a netbook sleeve when not in use or for transport. Seemed to do a good job of protecting everything.
 
I have not gotten one, I have the iPad 16gb wifi black... For the past couple of years, it has been working out very well. I do not see a reason to upgrade to the iPad Air... Maybe when the iPad Air 5 is out Ill upgrade.

I am not the type to the get the latest greatest when it comes out, I can wait...

Not sure what your problem with the smartcase is, but it's awesome. Full protection front and back. Haven't found a single thing about it I don't like. Much like the Air itself.

Near the front camera there was a tape sticking out of the case. Not sure why it was there , but everytime i was holding it, i felt it. Also the cover wasnt holding itself together when folded in triangle like the smart cover i have is.

Don't have any tape sticking out on mine. Also, this is a leather case. Leather is extremely slick when it's new. Once you've used the case for a day or so, it works perfectly as a stand. I just rubbed my hand on the area where the folded case contacted the back of the Ipad case. That got rid of the slickness, and it's perfect now.
