iOS 7 Discussion

JW about all the people always complaining about the cables...what do you do with the one supplied with your device? I've never found the need for more than 1 cable, especially since it has a USB at one end.

But then you have to carry a cable around with you. And that sucks. So I have 3. One for home, one for work and one for the car.

maybe it had to do with siri. I know I could access siri with a locked screen on my 5s

No, it was the security issues where you could access the camera, make calls and post to twitter.

how?

through siri right? or some other way?

*looks like there was a way to access the phone through the control center but I'm downloading the update now so hopefully it address the siri issue

That is a user defined setting. 3 things can be accessed and are by default unless you go into lock screen settings and disabled them, siri (which can then post to twitter, facebook etc, passbook, and swipe to reply,

Settings -> General -> Passcode Lock. The options are all in there.

After 2 days, I'd say most of it seems like a new skin. No massive changes, just the aesthetics.
However I officially hate the new folder system. I like being able to have larger folders, but I really wish there were some way to increase how many apps you can see within a folder.
It's almost like the "All apps" part of Windows 8. Just adding in one more tiny step makes all the difference in how accessible your applications feel.

Agreed re the new folders... it's driving me nuts because now things are no longer where they used to be (since apps have been shifted to page 2 of the folders...). Hope they allow it to be toggled....

It's even worse on the iPad! Flat out embarrassing there.

Starting to hate the big gray background of the dock. The whole flat look isn't really well designed IMO, not upto Apple standards. The auto update of apps is really nice though.

The whole flat look isn't really well designed IMO…

Can we all at least agree to stop calling the design flat? The redesign introduced a Z axis and expanded the window layering concept introduced by the notification center. It's not flat.

I think it's fair to abbreviate "losing the drop shadow" or "drop-shadowless" as "flat."

We all know what people mean.

Nope.

Flat + transparency gimmick is still flat.

The artwork for icons is flat, the UI has abolished buttons/shading/gloss in favor of flat white web page looks with text instead of buttons.

It doesn't get much flatter than iOS 7.

I've had my new 5S lock up on me twice in 2 days, once in the Camera yesterday and once trying to exit an RC Flight sim app today.

I can't recall my iPhone 4S ever locking up on me in the 2 years I've owned it.
Hope this isn't going to be a reoccurring issue.

Flat implies two dimensions, or a lack of layering. iOS 7 has a Z axis and layered windowing. It's not flat.

The drop shadows are gone in part because the UI is acknowledging the fact that it's being displayed on a backlit screen. It's a form of skeuomorphism. (No, skeuomorphism is not gone from iOS in 7, it just isn't taking the form of stitched leather.)

iOS 7 is about as not-flat as it gets without turning the screen into a '90s-style VR simulator.

Can we not nitpick about semantics? It's pretty clear to everyone whosever used an Apple product that the new look is flatter with no drop shadows, 3D, texturing etc. what does it matter if extra layers are added and some elements are transparent, that's only minimal anyway. Remove the rounded corners and curved elements and it would look very similar to Metro, except Metro is much more visually consistent and better designed.

E.g. In email the Send/cancel buttons are no longer buttons but just text without even a border. Yet the iOS keyboard has buttons with drop shadows, just like the previous version.

Flat is current UI look design trend. It is about the removal of individual UI element shading/dimensional cues/textures. There is no question that Apple has done these things and is firmly in the flat design camp.

Removal of those elements has problems.
1: it just looks ugly
The utter flat featurelessness, mixed with low contrast makes for a visual wasteland. Too counter the blandest visuals imaginable, Apple was pretty much forced to go with kiddie-candy colors. But I guess buying Apple means just accepting without question whatever direction they go.

2: it lowers discover-ability.
Contrast, shading, shadows.Aid readability, aid button discover. The sea of bland-flat areas make it harder to use.

3: it's less fun.
I think the touch screen interface, was the perfect match for Apples UI with rich texture and control depth. There is a more fun pushing a screen button, that looks like real button, with depth and shading, that reacts like a real button and sinks into the screen when you press it. Now you just touch text on a screen, it fails to have the visceral connection.

Lame transluceny effects do not counter this loss. They don't serve any functional purpose. They don't aid readability, they impair it. It is nothing but a gimmick and the first thing I turn off in any OS that has it.

Flat UI + pointless gimmick = still Flat UI.

Flat is current UI look design trend.

In general, yes, that's where Silicon Valley UI guys are going.

But iOS 7 is not flat. It is not the same as, say, Google's flat Gmail UI. There are some superficial similarities, like increased use of white space. But functionally they have nothing to do with each other. iOS 7 isn't flat, whether you use the word in its literal meaning or as a reference term for a specific style of design.

Can we not nitpick about semantics? It's pretty clear to everyone whosever used an Apple product that the new look is flatter…

The way something works isn't semantics. Describing it as flat is inaccurate, and frankly betrays a lack of perception—or a lack of experience actually using the thing.

Anyone else having more battery drain from iOS6 to 7?, my battery barely lasts a day with barely any usage, it use to last 2 days.

mine seems exactly the same on 7. I was just commenting on this to my wife last night... she said her is also behaving the same. maybe your background app updating is going nuts??

It looks pretty flat to me. I like it.

The current king of flat design is Gmail. And iOS 7 doesn't look very much like Gmail to me.

I've seen some talk about this. I think it's a combination of the background app refresh feature plus a lack of battery calibration. Calibrate your battery and see if the reported battery life improves. Charge to 100% and hold it there for 2 hours, unplug and use the device like you would normally without plugging it in to power until it shuts off. Then plug it back in and let it charge all the way to 100% again without interruption, rebooting it (hold sleep+wake until you see the Apple logo) once somewhere between 20% and 80% charge.

Are you on Verizon? I've heard of massive battery life drops on the Verizon model (even relative to the GSM counterparts).

You may have to disable the background auto-refresh feature for Apps to get battery life back to normal.

I'm not sure if it matters that I have the Verizon 5S but my battery life has been nothing short of spectacular. Of course it is new so that probably helps. My buddy said his 4S seems to last longer however.

My Verizon 5 is no better or worse than it was before. Still have to have a charger at work.

Never heard of battery calibration before. I'll give it a shot today. Is the calibration stored in a file somewhere on the OS?

Not me. The trick is to start your swipe from below the screen.

I am, it's definitely not easy or consistent.

edit: I figured it out. I wasn't waiting long enough for the considerable lag.

FYI: I live in the UK :D.

No, it's not something saved in a file. And battery calibration is something you should be doing once a month with all devices that a have a Li-ion battery. Phones, tablets, notebooks, etc.

IMO you should only do it if you are having a problem. Because the calibration involves running a battery completely flat, which is harder on a battery overall life cycle, than partial discharges.

It's harder on a battery only if you do it routinely. Once a month does no damage to the battery, and is in fact recommended operation.

Once/month is a routine.

It does nothing beneficial for the battery, it just gives better calibration for the gauge that reports battery life to the user. If your gauge is accurate enough for you, then there is no point doing this.

ANyone see any word on the iMassages fix? THis is getting kind of ridiculous...

Not yet.... it's really annoying though  Especially due to how hard it is to notice that it has happened if you're not on the look out for it. I don't understand why it doesn't time out and send as regular SMS sooner like it used to do.
