Whose installed the public beta so far? Kicking around the idea of jumping in early on the public betas this go-around.

Normally I wait a while, but this actually seems like a proper update revision that is more focused on bug fixes than "new features".

    Which was needed after iOS11.

That said, my iOS11 updated borked somehow, and so I need to backup/wipe/restore (stupid audio glitches when the screen locks, reinstall fixes it, but I'm lazy), so I might just combine the two.

    Not sure yet.

Can't really install it unless you've got a developer account, so in that sense, it's not really "public". The beta won't cost anything later on in the month though, that's probably when I'll try it out. Seems like they're trying to fix a lot of the shit that iOS11 broke, but the notification updates have me pretty intrigued, I'm looking forward to the grouping aspect.

Public betas are usually about a week behind the developer only betas. It’ll probably be available next week.

And although you need a developer account to install the developer only beta OTA right not, if you manage to acquire the IPSW file for the beta by other means you can install it with a DFU restore with any additional developer authentication.

I'm still using iOS 10.3.3. I still don't know if I will jump to iOS 12. I did update my iPad Air 2 to the newest iOS 11 and it killed my battery life. I still like Apple but don't trust them anymore.

Interesting. What does it say under battery health?

I'll be downloading it. But I always participate in all iOS and Android Betas where possible.

Meanwhile I am seriously considering getting rid of my 27" iMac because it won't have support for the next version of MacOS.

With the exception of my daughters 1st gen iPad Mini, I've always avoided using any Apple device that falls off of official support.

You know that is almost always 'stuff get's turned back on' right?

Every time there is an iOS update (a big one 9->10, 10-11, not the 11.2->11.3) Apple does this annoying thing of "TURNING ALL THE THINGS BACK ON".

my iPhoneSE dropped like a rock for 2 days after updating to 11. Then I went in and turned a ton of features off (almost all of which I'd already turned off b/c they annoy me before the update)
and Viola, my battery life returned to the land of the living.

Thanks for the update. I guess my iMac is losing support as well. Which is irritating as I always felt that the 6970 should've received Metal support from the beginning. It's an arbitrary line in the sand.

  11. Ok. So you Apple folks are just chomping at the bit to try a bug-infested BETA now, just to see what little things will be taken away, and what little things will be added. Cool.

$400 to $1000 for an iPhone. And you people want to allow Apple to force you to be a BETA tester. Got it.

Every release of IoS is essentially BETA, as well.

Sometimes maybe Apple should be paying you stalwarts a bit, just out of guilt.

No one is forcing anyone to do anything. I'm not really sure what you're getting at. A lot of people on all sorts of hardware use betas: because they're interested in them.

    I like bleeding edge software.

And considering I'm still on an iPhone 6, I think I'm getting my moneys worth out of my $800 investment from 2014. My intention was to run the phone until it wasn't getting any more iOS updates, and it looks like that might just happen. I am looking to replace my battery for the second time however. :)

  14. Hey, folks. Whatever you want to do or buy is fine with me. I might not understand the motivation, but I don't have to, and it's none of my business.

I didn't mean to sound judgmental about your bizarre phone decisions.

Proud user of a $50 Moto E4, powered by Android, works perfectly for what I want a phone to do. Even porn looks good on it.

This is just stupid. Apple forces no one to use their beta iOS's.

iOS 11 was regarded as a poor release, and this is why iOS 12 is targeting towards just fixing performance along with minimal additions to cloud based services like Siri.

As for your Moto E4 - Congrats, no one cares.

Like what? I don't think I missed any setting to save battery life. But there maybe one I didn't know about.

Hoping the public beta will land this week. Usually I wait until public beta 2 or 3 to get in on these, but it seems like beta 1 has been fairly stable so far.

Public Beta 1 was released yesterday. I only have it on my iPhone 6 right. I'm not exactly overwhelmed with the new features yet, but it is noticeably more responsive than iOS 11.4 was. I've been running it for less than 24 hours at this point so I don't really have that much time with it yet. No crashes so far.

I will probably load it on my iPad mini 3 tonight when I get home.

I still use my iPhone 8GB from 2007 in some capacity, so I'm not sure what everyone is complaining about.

Ok, that’s a bit extreme. I won’t use an iPhone or iPad that doesn’t receive iOS updates anymore.

So far these betas have been very stable for me. They honestly don't feel any less stable than iOS 11. The speed increase and quality of life improvements are phenomenal.

    Agreed.

I did notice a few bugs in public beta 1, notably in Safari and the Phone app. But those seem to be resolved in public beta 2.

I have two iPhone 8 Plus’s. One is 64GB and the other is 256GB. So I updated the 64GB one to iOS 12 public beta 2 and ran a benchmark on both phones.

iOS 12 makes that big of a difference with the GPU?

I know one of the supported features in iOS 12 is CarPlay Waze/Google Maps, does anyone that is trying the public beta know if those work now if you install the beta, or will there have to be an additional update to Google Maps/Waze that will likely come later?

I thought that was in 11.4? I don’t have CarPlay in any of my Fords so I can’t test it but my brother who does not run iOS 12 mentioned he’s using Waze through CarPlay already.

That was a Ford change outside of CarPlay, Ford made use of their own AppLink platform to allow Waze to function on Ford vehicles with Sync 3 3.0. I have it, but it's pretty laggy. You have to disable CarPlay for it to work as well. The actual CarPlay integration, which I am hoping will run smoother, is slated for iOS 12 according to Apple's release, at least I don't see it in my F-150 with Sync 3 3.0 and iOS 11.4.1, unless I disable CarPlay as mentioned above.

From an article on iOS 12:
"Headlining the announcements, Apple announced support for third-party map applications in CarPlay. The company says that Waze and Google Maps will be supported on CarPlay with iOS 12."

So yeah, I have a semi-decent way to use Waze now, but hate having to disable CarPlay to do it.

I disabled ScreenTime right away on my devices. Don't care to be made aware of how addicted I am to what apps or my phone, and hopefully it'll speed my devices up with it disabled.

Just tossed it on my cell. So far I don't notice a difference in performance on my 6S. My battery life hasn't gotten any better. Browsing Gawker media sites can still crash Safari. Screen Time doesn't seem like a particularly useful addition. All in all, I have no strong feelings about it one way or another. It's just another upgrade. They didn't seem to break anything, but they didn't really fix anything I complained about, either.

I'd say it's pretty good right now, before this most recent release, there were tons of issues with syncing back to the watch, which was super annoying.

I've had good luck with it... The one mail issue that would creep its head here and there seems to have been resolved now, its seems a bit more responsive (using X and 3rd gen tablet).

Funny, no more posted this and having a Notification glitch (on the latest update) on wake screen (on X, not on tablet).

Had a glitch just now with beta 2 where iMessages stopped showing up. There's a problem in beta 3 right now where voice mails can't be deleted.
