The motherboard & CPU combination incinerated, with a total blowout causing not only melted socket plastics, but bubbling-up solder through the socket, pins that turned blue from heat, and scorched pads on the CPU. under asrocks "mega thread" is see "im in contact with both parties" as in TWO, and when you scroll down more, others are having "issues" with the bios being wrong and not supporting the cpu.
so is there really "wide spread issues" with it or is it more wtftech fud?
also, when did we go from distrusting wtftech and videocardz rumors to them being the go to for half the "news" section!?

What is widespread? I read 40, which isn't widespread at all. But I probably missed the 5-6k number somewhere?

widespread equals more than a handful...the issue shouldn't be there at all no matter how large or small the sample size is

There should never be an issue with anything ever. Agreed

That said, if the odds of a defective part are less than the odds of being in a major airline accident and you consider that "widespread" then i would say that's a false narrative.

At lets put it in perspective of other cpu defects that cause failures.

Seriously though I wonder how many units are out there -- like a million or more right -- and we have a handful failures pooling on Reddit. Are there any other sites across the globe where the 9800x3d is sold that are reporting failures? Maybe TSMC is running everything to the wall and just like Blackwell stuff is getting through QC that ought not? Asrock bios fail like the Asus juiced SOC from the last round?

Mine is set to super basic Starbucks wielding blond settings and if it implodes I'll post it here.

All good questions. If someone says there are many hundreds that at least shows up on my radar. I sort of suspect cpus naturally have an expected early failure rate of like 0.1% which if it is that low and you simply replace those defective parts that seems fine. That math on that is 1k failures per million. No idea how many have been sold nor how "widespread" this is. Waiting for more data to know...

Looks like failure rates are much higher than I expected. So if this is a hand full of cpu failures, and it is well within expected failure rates, is this an issue?

you need to put it in perspective...even if the numbers are small...did we hear about these types of failures with the 7800X3D or 5800X3D?...no...that means there's some kind of issue with the 9800X3D and/or ASRock motherboards

How do we know the failure rate on those parts? You're assuming that because some people are saying something that it's an issue. It's most certainly worth watching, but you don't know a lot and you're drawing some conclusions that seem to be based on your assumption that "if we are hearing about it then it's a problem". Which might be true, but how confident are you?

Yeah....ain't hard to figure out the issue here lol

Example: There are reports of missing ROPS's on all 5000 series video cards. This is affecting all AIB models...This is a widespread issue.

exactly my point...we didn't hear about any issues with the 7800X3D...only thing we heard was how it's the best gaming CPU you can buy...I'm not saying the 9800X3D does or does not have any issues...but my point is we are hearing about it to an extent we didn't before...same with the 5000 series GPU's from Nvidia

ASRock is regarded as the best AM5 motherboard platform...so even if it's only happening with them it's not a good look

Funny, as I tell everyone MSI is the go to for AM5 lol.

I steer clear of Asrock.
 
Look....Asrock updated their bios to fix the issues with burnt out CPU's for their motherboards. Again this isn't an AMD issue......This is Asrock's issue.

I did, of course Asrock doesn't want to take the blame lol.

If any other AIB motherboards start burning them, then yes there could be an issue. But, at this time there isn't.

the fix is for all motherboard manufacturers...ASRock was just the first to implement it

Wide spread-
I spent 8k on a new shingle roof, it leaked in its first winter. I email the guy and he says, all my customers roofs are leaking this year, it's a bad winter...

Relevant only because 40 PC parts isn't wide spread, not enough to rule out power supplies as the problem.

I think I can clearly determine my roofer (lowest quote), is the problem.
 
Fully agnostic on what is going on, but from the picture and the release log of Asrock new bios, feel a bit anticlimactic, I was promised exploding cpus.

Widespread also take into account the gravity of the incident (i..e how rare we intuitively assume it would be), cpu achieving dual channel memory at 5600mhz as specs failure rate vs cpu exploding would require a different amount to be called widespread, in some ways school mass shooting in the USA are incredibly rare, more people die from lighting or in cow related incidents, etc... , they can feel as a widespread phenomenon to some because of how rarer they think they should be or something.

Low probability, high impact is a thing but how does it apply to a CPU? Unless it's cooking the whole system a broken cpu is a broken cpu. Very binary.

Would they have been actually exploding (like I was promised by the title) and not just your regular heating up, 20 of them could have been a lot.

widespread in the PC hardware segment means when it starts getting attention on places like Games Nexus, JayzTwoCents etc...high end PC building is a niche market so something being widespread just means it's not just a single occurrence...if a car is recalled or a food item it takes on a bigger scale in the media compared to a CPU part
 
I'm kind of glad I decided to wait even longer to update my pc now instead of buying a 9800x3d at launch. I have luck that bounces between great and terrible, and I'm sure I would have bought one that burned itself out. Especially because it was an asrock motherboard I would have paired it with.

From what I've read Asrock is the main culprit in this, but other manufacturers have had issues albeit at a lower rate. I was running my 9800X3D on an MSI B650 Tomahawk motherboard, and now an Asrock X870E Nova without issues. I checked my voltages and all were fine, but I did upgrade to the latest bios for safe measure. People forget that Asus was causing issues not so long ago.

I think these failure rates are blown way out of proportion as the new means of misinformation. 40 ASRock boards total fried.... out of how many total in operation?

I agree. Other CPUs don't seem to be affected in the same asrock boards. It's the 9800x3d. People have swapped 7800 x3d's and other cpus in the same boards and they work fine and for long periods of time without failing.

So it may be an asrock -> 9800x3d issue, or a 9800x3d issue, or an asrock + 9800x3d issue.

As far as it being only an asrock issue, a lot of people bought asrock boards, it was hard to get a taichi or nova, they'd go out of stock immediately - so you'd have to measure it "per capita" vs. other 870e motherboard manufacturers rather than by # of incidents, and it would probably help to narrow it to those with 9800x3d CPUs.

I'm curious whether the 9950x3D CPUs will have the issue or not. If not, then it would seem to imply that the 9800x3d is at fault, depending how you want to look at it . . even if it ends up being an issue when the 9800x3d + (asrock 870e) is combined. Potentially, the whole 9000 series may be effected though. Some people also suspect EXPO ram settings may be contributing to the chance of the failure happening.

Incidentally, there are a few replies in that thread from people with Asus boards who replied about their 9800x3d dying in them, too. The one died on an Asus B650e, and the system booted fine when he swapped a 7800x3d in. One of the other Asus guys had a 9800x3d die in an Asus tuf x670e plus board, another with an Asus Strix x670E, Asus x870e-e gaming wifi board, etc.. One Asus guy reports having RMA'd their dead 9800x3d and has swapped with another 9800x3d which is working, for now.


The fact that afaik there has been no disclosure whatsoever from ASRock and/or AMD as to what the actual issue that is causing this is, is not encouraging.
