As members of the Microsoft Hardware Industrial Design team, we are often asked where we find inspiration for our work. Is it fashion trends? Automobile trends? Sometimes. But for our latest project we didn’t have to look far — we found inspiration in the technology of one of Microsoft’s latest products. We were captivated by the fluid, rhythmic patterns of people using the Microsoft Touch Mouse. Their finger paths and hand movements beautifully flowed in an organic nature —it was like watching an orchestral conductor — so we wanted to release a limited-edition graphic for the Touch Mouse that spoke to the beautiful motion, and we knew just the artist that could bring that to life.

If its anything like the Arc for user experience, should be sweet.

(Being from Texas I still dont see why the guy is so popular, but saw alot more stuff by him on a visit to California)

Sounds like something that would be blurted out at an Apple fanboy convention :p

Thought this was going to be some digital painting wacom kind of thing :(

It looks like something rubbish, like apple usually produces. Can't help being reminded of the stupid "magic mouse" POS. What the hell is the point of not having the scroll wheel and buttons? It doesn't save room/make it lighter...just makes it have lower accuracy and probably less comfortable to use (you can't rest your fingers on the scroll wheel etc.) can see a whole bunch of control issues with this thing, especially because it's wireless. Infact wireless mice generally suck at things like smooth continuous arcs because of the wireless aspect/signal drops. It would be horribly shitty for drawing because of that, as well as the apparent lack of precise control.

I really can't see who would want this, or who it's intended for. I know microsoft make some decent mice, but seriously, this thing is best aborted now.

I might try it, at a store, maybe... or read a review about it's actual usage. The commercial was very lame IMO

Cool. Will pick it up if it's good and hopefully it could be hacked and modify and take full advantage of it like the Kinect.

Ah, more good old fashioned homophobia and Apple bashing on HardOCP. Classy.

So it is like a more expensive Apple Magic Mouse with lines all over it? I think I will have to pass.

Just because Apple products are overpriced, underperforming, rely almost solely on marketing and are often touted by seemingly homo and metro sexual people doesn't mean that HardOCP readers are homophobes or biased in any way.

Non-mechanical parts are less likely to break. Which was why we moved from ball to optical/laser.

You're a techie. You should know that :-P

You must be stupid to think so. Microsoft been known for experimenting touch products for yrs. The only problem they don't have a good business man like Steve Jobs to get it release. crApple is the company that been stealing and releasing it ahead of everyone else.

Where's all the darn buttons...I just bought a Logitech G700 gaming mouse for doing design work in the office. I mapped all of my commonly used shortcuts to buttons and it also lets you map macros to buttons. 14 buttons it has :)

But no way is something sensing a finger as reliable as something moved by it. It would have to interpret your movements, so would need degrees of give and take. Too small a movement and it doesn't move etc. Also there would be no audiable/physical feedback to say you had pressed a button. I'd also worry about the speed at which I could click (its not pressig a switch and too close together and the touch mouse might ignore the presses)

Wasn't the move from ball mice because they got clogged with crap and broke down all the time and were kind of slow/innaccurate? Going to optical/laser was a good use of technology that solved problems! Unless mice now have problems clicking buttons, this is just doing it for the sake of doing it, and just seems like adding a whole load of potential problems for 0 gain. :p

(also no extra buttons like on good mice, couldn't be without the side/nudge buttons from the g9x :D)
