Hey there guys....

Just wanted to ask the opinion of you experts around here...basically ive moved from a old old 35mm film camera, to a Cybershot T5 to a Canon S1 IS.

I feel like i really want to get into photography and this D50 seems to be first and most affordable step in the Digital SLR game..

Any opinions about this camera ? Or would you suggest something else ?

My price range is aobut where the D50 is at..

Thanks..

D50 and Canon Rebel XT are basicly the best DSLR out there for the price. Obviously the D50 is cheaper and in your price range soo uhh yeah buy the D50! :D

It seems like a nice camera, but you should budget around lenses and not the body. One of the main advantages of an SLR is that you can change lenses, so purchase with the awareness that you'll probably want to pick up another 2 or 3 lenses in addition to the kit lens within the first year or so.

Look at the pictures you've taken with your current gear, figure out what focal lenghts you commonly shoot at, and use that to help with your decision.

You'd be happy with either one. I have a 20d, but like the Nikon's as well. The lens is the clincher. A camera body is only as good as the lens you have on it. And again, both Canon and Nikon have a large selection of comparable lenses. If you can't afford to buy 3 lenses, buy one with a broad focal range.

I love my D50 w/ the 18-55mm. I would get an extra zoom for it though. B&H has a couple of good deals on some.

As has been stated, build around the kit (lens') rather than the body. Chances are, you won't keep the body more than 1-2 years, the lens' you could well keep a lifetime. DSLR and SLR technology is a big and incredibly expensive leap, I would suggest some research and seeing what it is YOU want to do before just choosing because of a budget now (save up if you need to, once you choose its not cheap to change companies).
www.fredmiranda.com is a great site and forum for this kind of stuff, pbase is as well.
