A few days ago my internet has been constantly disconnecting. At first it only happened once per day, now it is happening 10+ times a day, for 10 minutes or so at a time. My first thought was it could be my router, but it is new and has been working great for over a month (I have tried resetting it to factory). So now I thought maybe it is the modem, and when I plug the computer directly into it, it won't work. But it happens so intermittently it doesn't seem like it would be it.

And the way the internet disconnects is weird as well. Most of the time I lose all connectivity, other times some websites will work and some won't (ie. MSN.com will give a "Unable to resolve the server's DNS address." error while some other websites work perfectly.) And it happnes while playing L4D2, and I can't move at all or see anyone else move, but I can hear my team still talking for about a full minute until I get timed out.

I called my ISP, and they have been saying there have been outages for the last 2 days (when there were storms) but this has been happening before that, although not as bad since the storms.

Any ideas?

My equipment: Router: Linksys E1000, Modem: Ambit something (Broadcom chipset)

If you're getting DNS timeouts.

Change your DNS providers. Grab the IP for a OpenDNS server, and set the other one to Google's DNS server.

See if that helps smooth things out for you in the meantime.

ISP's are good at overloading their own DNS servers by having too few of them for too many subscribers. So moving your requests off their overloaded stuff will help.

Ping timeouts in games aren't related to DNS issues though. I would do quick easy things first. Cable swaps. Check drivers and / or update.

Scan for viruses make sure nothing is redirecting, causing hangups in the system that way.

It can't be a virus, it happens to two separate computers, one on wireless and one wired. How do you change the DNS server, and could that still be the problem on two separate computers? And as I write this it went down again...

I did some research online and found that you can access your modems logs through 192.168.100.1. If anyone can decipher it...

It mentions something about timeouts in it. Could it be my modem is going bad?:

Is this aDSL ? if dsl i suspect it would be the line noisy.
Most ISP's run test line for free.

It is Charter cable. I talked to a tech late last night after it went down again and he said that he was not getting any data from the modem on his end, so he remotely reset it and he got a response. He said a "signal" value was reading high (where higher is not better) and it was around 60 when it should be around 40. His best suggestion was to try buying a new modem (since I own this one instead of leasing) and seeing if that fixed it. Otherwise if a tech came out and found that it is the modems fault, they will charge for the service call ($35). So now I don't know whether to risk the money on a modem or a service call.

Although, since he remotely reset the modem (which I have done myself too a few times) it has not gone down in about 20 hours...

Edit: Went down again, a tech is coming out tomorrow for no charge regardless of problem. I'll let you guys know what the problem is.
