A little over a year ago I put together a rig which I primarily use for photo editing (Lightroom 2/photoshop), 3D CAD work (Pro/E / Solidworks), and music.
Details:
* Antec Mini P180
* Corsair 650TX Power Supply
* Core i5-750 (stock clock)
* Corsair H50
* Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2
* 4gb (2x2) Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600
* ATI FireGL V3600
* I-Inc 28" monitor (1920x1200)
* (1) WD Caviar Black 500GB hdd (OS)
* (2) WD Caviar Black 1TB hdds (RAID 1)
* SIIG JU-MR0012-S1 Internal card reader
* Windows 7 Professional SP1
Ever since I've built this machine, I've had issues with internal card readers working reliably. The first card reader that I bought was a Rosewill RCR-IC002. With a fresh install of W7 it would work fine, but eventually it would stop working, or work intermittently. What was odd is that the card reader section would not work, however the USB port on the card reader would function fine. It seemed to start acting up shortly after I'd update W7.
One of the pins in that reader's CF slot eventually became bent, and I replaced it with the SIIG unit listed above. It had similar issues. The most recent issue occurred when I inserted the CF card before logging on. Once logged on, the card was not recognized. A reboot did not fix the issue. Now every time I log on Windows notifies me that a USB device is not functioning properly.
I've tested both of these devices on an XP machine, and they'd function fine. While searching for information on this issue, I've read of other people having internal card reader issues with W7.
It's getting fairly frustrating having to rebuild/recover my OS every time this issue arises. If anyone has any insight into this problem, it would be appreciated.
I should note that if I move the card reader to another USB header, the issue is resolved...until it acts up again. I think this points to a software/OS issue as opposed to a hardware issue.
